Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: We have a special interview, a special guest interview with a supportive, supportive parent.
[00:00:06] Speaker B: Parent from Eagle Nation.
[00:00:10] Speaker A: And welcome back to the official Emmaus athletic podcast in the nest. I'm your co host, Shane Douglas, here as always, with Matthew Tomlinson. My main man, Matty. Ice. How you doing today, buddy?
[00:00:23] Speaker B: Good, Shane. How you doing?
[00:00:24] Speaker A: Feeling a little pumpkin spice over there?
[00:00:26] Speaker B: Sure. Back to this fourth episode of the season.
[00:00:31] Speaker A: You really didn't like the pumpkin spice stuff. You weren't a big fan of it.
[00:00:35] Speaker B: Just give me black coffee.
[00:00:36] Speaker A: Black coffee. Well, it's getting cool outside this week, actually. Isn't that cool? It's getting a little hot, but it doesn't feel like a summer heat. It's like a fall heat, even though it's in the eighties. So I don't know. We're not weathermen. We're not weathermen. But I'm so looking forward to fall weather.
[00:00:50] Speaker B: Me too.
[00:00:50] Speaker A: It's football weather, but also soccer and volleyball and cross country weather. So I love it. Can't wait for those seasons. And I guess we're in the middle of the season, beginning of the season, and it's looking really good, Matt.
[00:01:02] Speaker B: It is, Shane.
[00:01:02] Speaker A: It's looking really good. But how is your life?
[00:01:05] Speaker B: My life?
[00:01:06] Speaker A: Let the people know. I hear so many people, everything of how's Matthew doing? They're worried for you, man.
[00:01:12] Speaker B: Why? Doing great.
[00:01:14] Speaker A: Okay. See, you don't tell them how great.
[00:01:17] Speaker B: I know. Who's asking these questions.
[00:01:18] Speaker A: That's a nobody.
[00:01:19] Speaker B: That's wild.
[00:01:19] Speaker A: But nobody actually is.
[00:01:20] Speaker B: Okay, so you just made that up.
[00:01:22] Speaker A: But it's good to know that you're doing great either way today, Shane. For today's episode, everyone, we're going to recap the last week matchups for the Emmaus athletic team. Soccer.
[00:01:34] Speaker B: Go Eagles.
[00:01:35] Speaker A: Soccer had a couple games, volleyball as well. And cross country had a meet. And then we're going to also show you the upcoming games. But before we do that, we have.
[00:01:46] Speaker B: Yes, we have what?
[00:01:48] Speaker A: We have a special. What? I don't know what that was. What was that old. We have a special interview, a special guest interview with a very supportive, supportive parent. Parent.
[00:02:00] Speaker B: Eagle nation.
[00:02:01] Speaker A: Yep.
We won't say who it is.
[00:02:04] Speaker B: We'll surprise you.
[00:02:05] Speaker A: All right. But they were a parent of a student who was here for academics who.
[00:02:10] Speaker B: Just graduated this past, and a student who.
[00:02:13] Speaker A: Not just for academics, but. Or not just for sports teams. Now, academics and athletics, they've seen both.
[00:02:20] Speaker B: Sides of what it's like being a parent of a sport.
[00:02:22] Speaker A: So it's gonna be. It's gonna be a fun interview. You had the opportunity to sit down with them, and we'll get more into that after we recap. But after the recap, everybody. Ladies and gentlemen, Arima's eagles. The women's volleyball team is three and two.
[00:02:37] Speaker B: Now.
[00:02:37] Speaker A: Three and two. And then the men's soccer team is two. Two and one.
Yeah. And the cross country team is hot as ever.
[00:02:46] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:02:47] Speaker A: They just had a meet this last weekend. Brea tuttle Piard. So shout out to Bria.
Besides that, we've only had two meets. The guys have not been able to.
[00:02:56] Speaker B: Qualify yet because neither of them count, because they're not far enough. Races five k, six k. They need to run an eight k. So we're.
[00:03:03] Speaker A: Looking forward to the next couple weeks when they have a couple weeks off. We're just gonna get straight into it. They have a couple weeks off. Both teams do. But the men will race in on the 20th.
[00:03:14] Speaker B: They'll finally have a race that counts, and that matters. I mean, the other two did matter because they were working on time trials and working on just preparing for the meat. That's going to count, but this meat will count.
[00:03:25] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:03:25] Speaker A: So looking forward to that. That's a couple weeks away.
[00:03:27] Speaker B: It is, yeah.
[00:03:28] Speaker A: So we have so much time to kind of chill, but we've got to show cross country some love because the excitement is there. I know. They're. They're kind of, like, have a little sabbatical right now. Just really chilling, especially the women's team and preparing. They already. They've already grinded. They've already really put any effort because they've qualified for nationals as a team, so really looking forward to seeing them at nationals. Where is nationals this year?
[00:03:51] Speaker B: I know that nationals is in Indiana, hosted by Grace College.
[00:03:56] Speaker A: Okay. That's right.
[00:03:56] Speaker B: So that's gonna be the second year that they've gone there.
[00:04:00] Speaker A: Sweet. They'll be a fun race for them, and hopefully a familiar course.
[00:04:05] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:04:05] Speaker A: But we'll find out more as we get closer to nationals. And after the 20th, we'll be talking about how the men's team qualified for national. I honestly, that's. I mean, this isn't a big, like, what prediction, hot take or whatever.
They will qualify in the first race. Yeah, they will. 100%. No, don't. We're not trying to put pressure on you guys, all right? But the men we team is good this year. Yes, we are really very good, and I'm proud to see what they've been able to accomplish already and the effort they have put into these races that don't even matter. They don't count.
[00:04:46] Speaker D: It's hard.
[00:04:47] Speaker B: Like, trial runs, like, just running, though. Like. Cause obviously, like, when you run in a meet, you run to qualify and to finish. But, like, obviously, the guys have not been able to qualify because the meets haven't, in theory, counted because of the length of the course. But still, like you said, and like I said at the beginning, like, time trials, preparing for when it does count with their pace and with, you know, maybe tactics on passing people or staying behind someone until the last second and then passing them.
[00:05:16] Speaker A: But, yeah, I I'm really looking forward to regionals. It was really fun going out there last couple or a couple weeks ago.
[00:05:23] Speaker B: Because it's gonna be here.
[00:05:25] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:05:25] Speaker B: Which is so exciting.
[00:05:26] Speaker A: That is. I guess I didn't make that. I didn't say that, but in my.
[00:05:30] Speaker B: Mind, I knew that's also exciting.
[00:05:32] Speaker A: We said in the past, either way, on the first meet of the season, we raced on our home court. It was great. Had a lot of support. Shout out to the fans.
[00:05:40] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:05:40] Speaker A: Families.
[00:05:41] Speaker B: A lot of the student body showed up, which was awesome.
[00:05:43] Speaker A: Awesome. And the thing is, we are racing against teams. A lot of great cross country programs with higher level d schools, NAIA, mostly NAI and D three. But the even. Even the club at Iowa.
Iowa. Hawkeye.
[00:06:02] Speaker B: Run club. Right.
[00:06:02] Speaker A: Running club. Cross country club was there.
[00:06:05] Speaker B: Mm hmm.
[00:06:06] Speaker A: So they had high. They had some tough competition, and they.
[00:06:10] Speaker B: Performed really well, like I said. What, two episodes back or last episode? Like, no one finished last on our team.
[00:06:16] Speaker A: No.
[00:06:17] Speaker B: Which is also pretty impressive. They weren't even say they're competition.
[00:06:21] Speaker A: I wouldn't even say they're, like, exactly middle of the pack, top of the middle.
[00:06:24] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:06:25] Speaker A: You know, bottom of the first and impressive.
[00:06:27] Speaker B: So knowing that they're gonna be able to have a similar course for regionals against teams that are racers at our.
[00:06:35] Speaker A: Level, unless the coach, Gerardi, tries to find a new course, which I know there's discussion about that.
[00:06:40] Speaker B: Right.
[00:06:40] Speaker A: We'll see. That'd be sweet. I know some of the possibilities of maybe exciting. Where else? Here. I'm hearing a couple of those courses. I don't know if I'm allowed to say, but that would be really cool.
[00:06:51] Speaker B: No, it's not gonna be running around campus.
[00:06:53] Speaker A: That wouldn't.
Circles. They'll all be married by the end of it.
[00:06:59] Speaker B: That's weird because only three times, but anyway.
[00:07:02] Speaker A: That'S a good one. Either way, though, cross country team, great team. Very family orientated. And this is what I love about our sports. And we were very mushy gushy last year when it came to talking about our sports teams and how they all are a family, but to see the cross country team and how much they fellowship with one another. And when I say fellowship, I'm not just talking about playing video games or board games or having a good time. Like, this is price centered activities. And either if that's a meal or if that's just conversations, they're. They're so kind of dialed in on.
[00:07:41] Speaker B: That, which is really cool.
[00:07:42] Speaker A: They're just so close, very close. But in a big picture, this sports here at Mas, if someone talks to me, and I had a recent conversation, hopefully maybe someone who might transfer here, but they're really looking for a coaches.
[00:07:59] Speaker B: And a team where they are supportive of one another. They hold each other accountable, but they support one another through good and through the bad, and don't just tear down and rip down each other.
Plenty of players on our team have experienced that in high school or at different programs. And so it's just very refreshing. Like you're saying, like, especially, like, in even my time here, like, you know, you build each other up. You're each other's friend, your supporter. You're the biggest fan. Like, it's great.
[00:08:31] Speaker A: They're looking. Exactly, because it's not all about your sport. It.
[00:08:33] Speaker B: It's. You want to be competitive in your sport.
[00:08:35] Speaker A: You just keep interrupting.
[00:08:36] Speaker B: But it's. I love you. I do. I love interrupting you. But it's all about. Christ.
[00:08:39] Speaker A: It's true.
[00:08:39] Speaker B: And it's. Yeah.
[00:08:40] Speaker A: I'm so sick of you, man. Gosh, get a new person. I'm joking.
No, but they are looking for that. They're looking for that relational aspect in the sport, not just a sport where people go in, or a program that they go in, you know, nose down and just grind. And it's all about me. I need to succeed. And here, to me, it's just not like that.
[00:09:00] Speaker C: Right?
[00:09:00] Speaker B: Like I say all the time, I tell. I bring this up probably every day. Sports doesn't build character, it reveals character.
[00:09:06] Speaker A: And I think the cross country team is a fantastic image.
[00:09:09] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:09:10] Speaker A: Of that, we shout out to Girardi's.
[00:09:12] Speaker B: I don't think we literally building that from the ground up.
[00:09:14] Speaker A: There's been seasons where we have hot heads on every single roster, but ever since we've started the cross country program, there've always been sweethearts on that team, and it's been a family community where we see them eating pasta together or always having meals together. Lunch, dinner, whatever it might be. Breakfast.
[00:09:32] Speaker B: How would you have a hot head on the cross country course.
[00:09:35] Speaker A: That'd be funny.
[00:09:36] Speaker B: Run faster. How would that work? Obviously, we know how it gets with volleyball and basketball.
[00:09:41] Speaker A: They're running up to people just whispering in their ears, I'm faster than you.
[00:09:47] Speaker B: How would that work?
Hopefully Caleb doesn't do that.
[00:09:54] Speaker A: Caleb Ness would never do that. He's a force.
[00:09:58] Speaker B: If you listen to his, listen to his interview last year, how he talked about, like he praised the entire time.
[00:10:04] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[00:10:04] Speaker B: And so. Which is really cool.
[00:10:05] Speaker A: I learned. I'm about his new song, the force. Frank's new song is good, though, with, with Jake. Whatever this got that.
[00:10:12] Speaker B: I never used to this.
[00:10:13] Speaker A: Caleb Ness, one of our cross country runners, has like a force of Frank vibe, if you don't know force.
[00:10:18] Speaker B: But he had it first.
[00:10:19] Speaker A: He did.
[00:10:19] Speaker B: He did.
[00:10:20] Speaker A: He had it last year.
[00:10:21] Speaker B: And yeah, he did so before for spring.
[00:10:23] Speaker A: Blew up over the summer. Either way, cross country, we love you guys. Much love and us. And to any alum, anyone supporting fans, students show up, show up for as many of these meets that you can either, if they're an hour or two.
[00:10:39] Speaker B: Away, we have the five K fun run here on campus. And that's a great way to support the college and the cross country team, too.
[00:10:47] Speaker A: So cross country, we got a couple weeks on out until the men can qualify.
[00:10:52] Speaker B: Will.
[00:10:53] Speaker A: Will.
[00:10:53] Speaker B: Yes.
Will qualify. Yes.
[00:10:57] Speaker A: I mean, I mean, keep him in your prayers. He's been battling an injury for a while.
[00:11:01] Speaker B: There has been a little sickness, too, on the guys team, so it's nice that they have this break.
[00:11:04] Speaker A: And this is where sickness usually happens. Like a lot of students here in.
[00:11:07] Speaker B: Amazon, the weather just changes abruptly in.
[00:11:09] Speaker A: So they'll get. They won't have any meat that will really hurt them in between that. So hopefully they're healthy. They're all healthy within the next two weeks. And, you know, praying for Will Kuranda, one of the freshman runners, hoping that he can be able to get on the track for once, you know, and they at least gets a run this year, so. Hoping for that. Praying for that. Keep that in your. Your thoughts and prayers, but moving forward. Love cross country. We got volleyball.
[00:11:37] Speaker B: Volleyball, volleyball.
[00:11:38] Speaker A: Had a great weekend.
[00:11:39] Speaker B: Fantastic three.
[00:11:40] Speaker A: And you would say fantastic.
[00:11:42] Speaker B: I mean, of course, yeah. I mean, you know. Yeah, I'm pretty. I'm pretty energetic about stuff. But they had a good weekend.
[00:11:47] Speaker A: They wiggling over there.
[00:11:48] Speaker B: They did wiggle, wiggle. They had a three and o slip over the weekend. They play. They had a try match with Spurgeon and Moody and so we played Spurgeon first we won three games to two. We won the first two sets and then dropped the next two sets and the one set five.
[00:12:06] Speaker A: That was stressful.
[00:12:07] Speaker B: It was very stressful.
Very well. Sayla and Caitlin combined for 32 kills, which was awesome. They both played really well. And then after that we played moody, beat them 30.
Kind of highlight from that was Bev and Brooke combined for eleven aces. In the third set, we were down nine to two.
And then Bev started serving and she served 13 times in a row. And we went up 15 to nine.
[00:12:35] Speaker A: Actually, that was pretty cool. What everyone thought happened was Bev serving, but what happened is that I showed up.
[00:12:41] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, that's when you finally showed up.
[00:12:43] Speaker A: Yeah. Well, no, I was there, but then I, like, I went. I forget, but I walked in and I thought it was nine two. And I was there when they were warming up. I think I was.
[00:12:51] Speaker B: So thank you, Shane.
[00:12:52] Speaker A: I walked in to and it was nine two. And then we started, like, winning, so.
[00:12:57] Speaker B: And then Tuesday night, they played division three opponents Mount Mary and won three games to zero.
[00:13:03] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:13:04] Speaker B: So they had a good weekend.
[00:13:05] Speaker A: Almost swept everybody.
[00:13:06] Speaker B: Almost with. Everyone should have, should have swept everyone should have. Which is really good because going into this, this weekend, it's gonna be a fun, tough weekend. Fun, tough weekend.
[00:13:16] Speaker A: Fun.
[00:13:17] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:13:17] Speaker A: Rough and tough.
[00:13:18] Speaker B: Especially against. Rematch against Spurgeon. At Spurgeon.
[00:13:20] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:13:21] Speaker B: So after we beat them three two here on the road, be on the road to go play them again and.
[00:13:27] Speaker A: Save it for the end of the podcast.
[00:13:28] Speaker B: And save it for the podcast.
[00:13:29] Speaker A: Thank you.
But, yeah, it's a lot of great weekend home games. Our first home games of the season, the fans showed up. Studio section was, you know what sucks?
[00:13:40] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:13:41] Speaker A: You know what sucked was each game.
[00:13:43] Speaker B: Soccer team was gone. I know.
[00:13:45] Speaker A: And the soccer team has always been.
[00:13:47] Speaker B: One of the 20 guys that are energetic about it.
[00:13:49] Speaker A: They've always showed up for the volleyball game and have been some of the biggest supporters.
[00:13:53] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:13:53] Speaker A: Throughout the years.
[00:13:54] Speaker B: But I must say, it was a very good bounce back slash. You know, just response by the ladies after the first weekend, so.
[00:14:01] Speaker A: Yeah. And it was which, by the way.
[00:14:05] Speaker B: The two teams we lost to the first weekend, both are ranked.
[00:14:08] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:14:08] Speaker B: So, yeah.
[00:14:09] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. I mean, that's the, that was just.
[00:14:11] Speaker B: So people are aware.
[00:14:12] Speaker A: That's what we said earlier in the podcast is coach Hannah and coach Megan.
[00:14:15] Speaker B: They really schedule the first part of the season. Hard to prepare for the postseason and conference. Yeah.
[00:14:22] Speaker A: So. But this weekend, I think, really showed a lot of confidence in the girls, them learning from mistakes. Against teams that we can beat, knowing that we can beat, you know, on not needing a good day, not needing a great day to beat them, especially.
[00:14:40] Speaker B: Moody, being a regional team. So regional standings, too.
[00:14:43] Speaker A: So I think, I think these girls this year, our women's team, they're going to really learn from these last three matchups.
[00:14:50] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:14:50] Speaker A: Walking away with wins, giving them some encouragement from, you know, the last, the first couple of games of the season, but being able to go into this.
[00:14:58] Speaker B: Weekend with some momentum going momentum, but.
[00:15:01] Speaker A: Also being on the road and being on the road is always tough. Always tough. No matter what. No matter where you go, if there's any fans or no fans, just always traveling, sitting on that bus, that van for, you know, all those hours can be just, just stay stinky.
[00:15:15] Speaker B: But those memories are unforgettable.
[00:15:17] Speaker A: The memories are fun, but you might.
[00:15:19] Speaker B: Get a little sore from just sitting in a van for 6 hours. From experience. This is true.
[00:15:24] Speaker A: This is true. So I'm looking forward to what the girls are able to pull off this weekend. Of course, we'll get to the recap or not the recap, but the looking ahead after the interview and the recap of the last week. But the women's team is looking good this year, right? We were a fantastic team last year. We added a lot of talent this.
[00:15:40] Speaker B: Year and a lot of improvement and.
[00:15:42] Speaker A: Helping the depth as well as the team. Once when they get their groove, once when they hit it, they're gonna be scary. They're gonna be scary. And I think this, these last three.
[00:15:52] Speaker B: Matchups and not just are gonna be scary, but everyone's scary.
So it'll be really good. But moving on to soccer, what do.
[00:16:01] Speaker A: You, what do you.
[00:16:01] Speaker B: So we have, so we, over soccer, we played, we went up to Northwestern in Minneapolis and played division three opponents, which they are d three. They're also, they were in our region, other not, they're NCCA division one team and their d three. And they are a very good program.
[00:16:18] Speaker A: And we just hopped from volleyball. Both teams, both our women's volleyball team and men's soccer team are playing d one schools in NCCA this season.
[00:16:28] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:16:28] Speaker A: So the step up and the confidence our coaching staff has in our roster, especially on the women's volleyball side, going into playing Judson for women's volleyball and then what we just played this last week, Northwestern. Northwestern is exciting.
[00:16:43] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:16:43] Speaker A: It's exciting for the future.
[00:16:45] Speaker B: It really is. And it gets those big time, big game moments to prepare for those young athletes because both our teams are very young, super for the future. But, yeah, we played Northwestern.
Like I said, this is a team. It was a 50 loss.
Again, good takeaways, but, like, I mean, 50 against a very good team. Yeah, that's, that's good. But, like, still, like, you can, you.
[00:17:08] Speaker A: Can always do, you can always play better. But the guys, like, they're, they're frustrated a little bit, but they also, I feel like going into the game, nobody really had the thought right of winning, which I'm not a fan of. Not a fan of at all. I never want to play a game.
[00:17:22] Speaker B: Those are the fun games. You play tough teams because, like, anything can happen.
[00:17:25] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:17:25] Speaker B: And sometimes crazy things do happen.
[00:17:27] Speaker A: You don't play to lose. You play to win. Exactly.
[00:17:30] Speaker B: So that game was last Saturday and then on Monday, actually. Really cool. The coaches poll for the national rankings came out.
[00:17:37] Speaker A: Yeah. What a say.
[00:17:38] Speaker B: And Emmaus was ranked 9th in the nation. Men's soccer, which was awesome.
[00:17:46] Speaker A: I really, I really think the Spurge game had a lot to do with that. Spurgeon's coaches have a lot of connections with some of, some of the front office and the polling, but, and they were very impressed with our team and Spurgeon is a dominant physical team. And the fact that we were able to pull away with a victory against them, too.
[00:18:06] Speaker B: Just beat Manhattan, too.
[00:18:07] Speaker A: Yeah. And so beating Spurgeon was huge. Spurgeon also had some votes. They will sneak into the top.
[00:18:13] Speaker B: They were for sure like seven votes for 11th base.
[00:18:16] Speaker A: I think we had 14. Yeah. So hopefully, hopefully we can get retain this. I think we have a lot of conference play the remaining of this month.
[00:18:26] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:18:26] Speaker A: Some tough competition, but a lot of our tough games are not too far ahead.
[00:18:32] Speaker B: Right.
[00:18:33] Speaker A: So we'll have to play Spurgeon again and we'll play Manhattan. Play faith.
[00:18:36] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:18:37] Speaker A: Another, since we're talking about the pool, another team in our conference, Barclay Christian.
[00:18:41] Speaker B: They were fourth or fifth.
[00:18:43] Speaker A: They're in the middle of the pack.
[00:18:44] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:18:45] Speaker A: So Barclay has a complete new team this year. We'll talk about them later on in the season as we, it gets close to their matchup. But Tuesday.
[00:18:52] Speaker B: Yeah. It's going into, after being ranked 9th going on Tuesday, we had our rivalry game up in Watertown, Wisconsin. We played Maryland Bubbler, home of the bubbler.
[00:18:59] Speaker A: At least it's created there.
[00:19:01] Speaker B: Yes. And that game ended in a two two tie.
[00:19:05] Speaker A: And we say bubbler. We don't mean water fountain.
[00:19:07] Speaker B: No.
[00:19:08] Speaker A: Did you know that's what was called?
[00:19:09] Speaker B: Yes, I did.
[00:19:09] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:19:09] Speaker B: That's what Elijah bars has always called it.
[00:19:11] Speaker A: Yeah. A water fountain is a water fountain. A bubbler is a carbonated, natural caffeine drink that everyone loves.
[00:19:18] Speaker B: And it's tasty and it's produced in Watertown.
[00:19:20] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:19:21] Speaker B: But, yeah, no, it was. It was a pretty good game. Jacob Davis scored his first career goal.
[00:19:26] Speaker A: Congrats.
[00:19:27] Speaker B: Game. Which is awesome. Jacob. And then Jake had another goal. That's his fourth of the year, which is awesome. But, yeah, it was just. I think it was, what, one really tough. It was one one at halftime. Yeah, I think it was one one at halftime.
[00:19:40] Speaker A: One one a half time.
[00:19:41] Speaker B: And then we both. We scored to go up to one and then 10 seconds later, 30 seconds later. Excuse me, they scored a tie to two.
[00:19:48] Speaker A: That's the thing, Matt, is both goals on Maranatha side were a.
Were a counter.
[00:19:55] Speaker B: They were, and they were both off of set pieces. It was a PK and it was a free kick into a goal.
[00:20:01] Speaker A: But the thing is, is in soccer, in the game of soccer, one of the.
What everyone knows is after you score, the next easiest opportunity the other team has to score is right away. Right away, within a minute. Within a minute of you scoring.
[00:20:17] Speaker B: That's what happened.
[00:20:18] Speaker A: And that's the. Exactly what happened is they ran downfield after our first goal from Davis and caused a foul in the box.
And we're able to take the PK straight down the middle. No power behind it. Tucker dove to the left. Really frustrating. Really tough on the guys there. And then Jake scored in the second half.
Great goal, great positioning. So really brought a lot of excitement. But then again, gold ran down, counter attack, and it just. I don't know what happened with the second goal. Really looked like Tucker didn't have a good look on it. I don't know what his thought process mindset was, was there, but it's not the first time.
[00:21:01] Speaker B: No. I mean, it was a one on three. Like, we had three defenders in the way and it just somehow just.
[00:21:05] Speaker A: It's funny because the same thing happened a couple of years ago when we were playing. Maranatha actually wasn't Maranatha, but it was on Maranatha's field and kicked around the same spot Marin athlete kicked, but it was. It was a slower ball on the ground. But the thing is, our keeper back then did not go for it because he didn't think it was going to go in.
[00:21:26] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:21:26] Speaker A: And I feel like that that's what it looked like. It looked very similar.
[00:21:30] Speaker B: Might I just kind of just jump a little late or something? I wonder. I mean, what could have happened was field of vision was blocked defenders was in the way and so. Yeah.
[00:21:38] Speaker A: So I don't know.
But Tucker, great keeper fan.
[00:21:42] Speaker B: No, he's a student tastic.
[00:21:44] Speaker A: Yes, you're right. He was to athlete of the week last week. So we're, you know, it starts on the top to the ball.
[00:21:50] Speaker B: Things happen when he's in goal and you know, just unfortunately we just couldn't get that third goal.
[00:21:55] Speaker A: But that'll happen.
[00:21:56] Speaker B: I mean, ties are ties, but they are better than law.
[00:22:00] Speaker A: Nobody like, nobody likes ties. And it's just frustrating to tie against.
[00:22:04] Speaker B: Maranatha which is a regional opponent.
[00:22:06] Speaker A: Regional opponent.
[00:22:07] Speaker B: And a team that we way that they're doing regional ranking based off of wins and losses. So this will kind of throw a little wrench into that ranking when it comes to regional play. But.
[00:22:18] Speaker A: But like we don't. You don't want to. You don't want to tie or lose.
[00:22:22] Speaker B: Which is the second time we tied with them in two years. There's a second tie with them in two years.
[00:22:26] Speaker A: So last year. It's just tough.
[00:22:28] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:22:28] Speaker A: You don't. Can't say anything about it. Moving on, we'll play them again.
Nothing in the regular season.
[00:22:36] Speaker B: I don't think so.
Not 100% sure, but we won't play.
[00:22:40] Speaker A: Them most likely again.
[00:22:41] Speaker B: Check the schedule and let us know.
[00:22:43] Speaker A: Exactly. So with that moving forward, we're going to go straight into our special guest interview. Matt, do you want to know who they are?
[00:22:50] Speaker B: Yeah. So I had a great opportunity and super thankful for Kevin Rand, Kev Dog, he came on after the game against Mount Marion, did a little interview with me talking just about his experience as an Emmaus parent. And you guys want to check it out.
[00:23:06] Speaker D: What's up, everybody? Welcome back to our new segment of in the nest. When we're doing interviews with players and parents of our players, we're joined by Kevin Rand.
[00:23:15] Speaker B: Kevin, thanks for joining us today.
[00:23:17] Speaker C: Thank you, Matthew, for having me here. So I got called out on the last of the nest. So I thought, you know, I got it. I got to come out and do this interview if you're going to call me out.
[00:23:24] Speaker D: Yes, Kevin, such an avid listener. We appreciate all your support.
[00:23:27] Speaker B: But yeah, I just want to start.
[00:23:28] Speaker D: Off by talking about you as a parenthood. You have a current student and you have a graduate at Emmaus and just wanted to talk about your experiences so far as a parent of an Emmaus Eagle athlete and an Emmaus Eagle student body member.
[00:23:42] Speaker C: Well, if I can back up a second, you know, just. We didn't even know Emmaus existed at first. And I knew my daughter wanted to be a teacher, but not in Illinois. So I just looked up affordable Christian colleges in the midwest, and Emmaus is one of the first schools that popped up. And I thought Dubuque, just across the river, not too far from home. So we thought we'd check it out. And we visited it about five years ago, and we met Mister Emmaus Matthews Tomlinson when we first came and loved it. And it just seemed like a great fit for Allison. She visited some other schools, but Emmaus was just a great fit for her. But, yeah, but for her, she wasn't an athlete, but did participate in her murals and things like that. So that's nice that Amayus has those offerings. She also came in during COVID so that was, that was rough to start with, too. So to drop her off here, you know, a little unnerving, but we knew she was in a great place and, and, yeah, and just, it was just a great opportunity to be kind of a home away from home for other Emmaus students. She met a lot of friends that were outside the midwest, so we had, like, Easter with people at our house and things like that. We're not too far from O'Hare, so we got to drive people that way. But, but really, just as a student, she's in the education program, or was. She's graduated now, but the teachers there are just amazing. And I'm in education. I'm an elementary teacher, too. And she just did, they just did an awesome job of preparing them. And we had some great conversations at home about what they were doing. And just a small class size. I mean, that was just amazing, too. So very nice for me. And then Caitlin came along a few years later here, and at first said, this is a great school for Allison, but it's not for me. But I think that over time, she got to know some of Alison's friends, got to be on campus, got to experience, do that was a great experience. Made some good connections. Yeah, I was really interested in the volleyball program, and I can't say enough about coach Hannah and Coach Reggie and just how they came and visited her for summer games and Lauren and Nellie coming to her super sectional game and just that family aspect, that was so awesome.
And, yeah, just the team in general, it's just, it's just a huge family, and it's great. And I'm glad that, you know, Caitlin decided to come to Mays to play volleyball and education as elementary education, too, and having Jenica follow along, you know, being our niece, and that's been great and really just all the other players and parents just feel like family, too. So it's just been a great connection and shout out to coach Meg and coach Tasha, too, for just being awesome and thanking them for all and all their kids and your kids that Caitlin and others can enjoy, too. So it's just been a great family experience.
[00:26:13] Speaker D: I know that's one thing that we've, that Shane and I've talked a lot about in the nest has been just the support of the parents, especially these last couple years with, with you guys, you know, leading the way with volleyball and then the soccer parents and how so supportive you guys are. You know, you've come, you've made it to almost all of our games. I think Vicky has made it to every single game that Caitlin has had so far. And it's just really cool seeing that, you know, home games and also way games when sometimes we have as many fans as the opposing team does. But, yeah, kind of segueing off that. Just want to talk a little bit about, you know, these last five years from when Allison, her way, all the way through Emmaus and then Caitlin's last year is just the growth that you've seen in your daughters at their time at Emmaus.
[00:26:49] Speaker A: All right.
[00:26:50] Speaker C: Yeah. One thing with the cross, there's kind of a crossover sport wise, too, that's been amazing that I forgot to mention before. Just, you know, just Allison taking some interest in basketball, watching basketball at home with her friends, something that she didn't really do in high school, but just that, that closeness of Emmaus, too, and just getting to know parents from the other, other teams at Emmaus as well. So that's, that's been neat that there's, you know, they're the, you know, watching games online for each other, texting each other. That's, that's been fun. But as far as the growth aspect that you're asking about Allison, it was just great for her to, you know, may I just have so many opportunities, like at Hope church, for her to work with the kids program. So she did a lot of that at our church, and so she was just an extension of that. And then just, you know, having those floor chapels is great as well. So it just, you know, just keeps it grounded. And, you know, Chapel's great, too, but just having that tight knit group, you know, with your floor itself, that's been wonderful. So it led Alison to be working at our church now, too, as a kids leader and now as a, and she's doing teaching as well. So she's been busy, but I think Amaya's prepared her well for that. For that. And with Caitlin, yeah, just the growth that I've seen in her, that's been amazing. You know, just to have those christian leaders, you know, those christian women leaders that I really like from the coaching staff as well as just that tight knit group of the team. Seeing her carry that over the summer and doing some Bible study work with some of her friends and having them come to church with us too. And I just, I just can't ask for more. It's just, you know, it's, you know, it's tough leaving Alison here during COVID but leaving Caitlin here and just knowing the coaches and the people around here just looking out for her. We really can't ask her more. It's been a wonderful experience.
[00:28:25] Speaker B: That's awesome.
[00:28:26] Speaker D: That's great to hear. Looking ahead a little bit more too. You know, we have big weekend coming up of games down in Kansas City, but I, next Wednesday, a little bit of a homecoming game for you and your family at Judson. So you went to Judson and you played at Judson and Salah's mom played at Judson. So we're gonna have a lot of Judson alumni cheering on Emmaus at that time.
[00:28:46] Speaker C: Yeah, we should have good crew there, so. Go Eagles. Yeah, I can, I can just say that. And I think you're covered with about half the game. Yeah, about half the games we play this year. You know, you could just say, go Eagles. And then, yeah, everyone's eagle. But no, no, Judson was a great place to be. You know, I met my wife there, so that was amazing. And the Gregory's met there too. So it'll be fun for the volleyball team to look at some late 19 hundreds slash early 2000 pictures of me and misses Gregory as well. So I'm excited for the team to experience that and see some old faces that were so supportive of us. But yeah, just Emmaus just takes it to that next level being a Bible college. I mean, I had some great Bible classes at Judson, but there's just, you know, just so much more in depth when you go to that, a Bible school like that. And I know, you know, it's a few extra classes here and there, but, but it's definitely worthwhile because, I mean, it really, you know, prepares you for life and what really matters in life, so. So, yeah, it'll be a great, pretty much a home game for us about a half hour away instead of our two plus hours that we usually go. But but we'll be heading our 7 hours to Kansas City this weekend, too, so we'll get that covered. That's what personal days are for. Checking for me and yeah, it's, it's totally worth it to see the, see the teams and see other family members. And I have some people I know in the Kansas City area that I invited to come, so they'll be coming to join and watch Caitlin and the rest of the girls, too. So it's just exciting just to see familiar faces and just watch the volleyball team grow. It's been wonderful.
[00:30:06] Speaker D: It's been incredible, especially these last three years under coach Hannah, just seeing of where they started and how they stuck to the foundation of the program and how the Lord has just continually blessed these last three years and where they are now. But Kevin, we really appreciate it if you guys, family or parents want to be on in the nest at some point, we'd love to have you. But anyway, signing off, it's a great day to be an eagle.
[00:30:31] Speaker A: That was a great interview, Matt. Good job over there. Love, Kev dog. He's a huge fan of the show. Gave us a gift card the other day.
[00:30:38] Speaker B: I know. Shout out Kev dog.
[00:30:39] Speaker A: Shout out Kev dog. And looking forward to the next gift card from anyone.
I'm totally joking. I do appreciate the gift card. Everything, I think I just honestly spent it on my wife, so I might.
[00:30:55] Speaker B: Have probably, I'd have probably pay off her tab that you put on me.
[00:30:58] Speaker A: But you're going to owe a lot of drinks to some students I know who are trying to get doers.
[00:31:05] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:31:05] Speaker A: To come on.
[00:31:06] Speaker B: Sign up for do.
[00:31:07] Speaker A: Sign up for do. Shout out to that happening first week of October. Before we get into the announcements and wrapping up the show, we do want to tell you about the upcoming games real quick, Matt, what do we have on an upcoming schedule for not cross country? We already know what's going on for cross country. Two weeks we got the meet where the men are only racing now. Volleyball and soccer.
[00:31:27] Speaker B: Yep. So we have one upcoming game for soccer. It's a home game against Faith Baptist next Tuesday at 04:00 p.m. september 17. So that's a big conference game.
[00:31:37] Speaker A: Huge game.
[00:31:39] Speaker B: That should be really fun because they are reigning conference champions. So we'll see how that goes. And then volleyball has four upcoming matches this week, so they have three of the weekend. So they're playing at Spurgeon on Friday at 06:00 p.m. the 13th, and they're going to Calvary and playing a tri match. So we play Calvary in the morning at 10:00 a.m. so, which is a conference game. And then we play Bethany College from Kansas, and they are in Nai school. So that's going to be a good game for us to gauge, especially where we're at then. And then following that, we, as Kevin alluded to in the interview, we're at Judson on Wednesday at, I think the games at 06:00 p.m. on the 18th. And they are also nei. And they're, like you said earlier, they're division one NCAA, so haven't played them in a few years. They are a.
We did play in basketball, but yeah, we've been playing in volleyball, so it'd be fun to see, especially for Jamie Gregory, since that's where she played volleyball. So Sally gets to go play in the. In the gym that her mom played at. So that would be cool. Yeah. So a lot of big games coming up for volleyball and for soccer.
[00:32:43] Speaker A: And Justin's a huge program to big school out there in Illinois. So looking forward to that match for the women's volleyball team. And then, honestly, the weekend hearing coach Meg, coach Hannah talk about the Bethany being a team that he can beat, as well as just all the conference, the conference playing, just the tough matchup against Spurgeon, that rivalry that is growing. It's a friendly rivalry. I like Spurgeon, you know, and then with soccer, I guess next week, faith, huge game.
[00:33:12] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:33:12] Speaker A: Our rivals, eagle against Eagle.
[00:33:15] Speaker B: The bets is literally the battle of the Eagles in the state of Iowa.
[00:33:18] Speaker A: You know, the thing is, women's or the basketball team have the trophies.
[00:33:21] Speaker B: Yep. Volleyball is getting a trophy.
[00:33:23] Speaker A: Getting a trophy starting this year.
[00:33:25] Speaker B: So soccer is not too far behind.
[00:33:27] Speaker A: Soccer needs one. Soccer needs one, which we should have made a bigger announcement about that trophy.
[00:33:32] Speaker B: For when we play them. We'll can bring it up.
[00:33:34] Speaker A: Okay, show picture. Well, we'll actually have it right here, right?
[00:33:38] Speaker B: Hopefully, maybe we'll find out.
[00:33:40] Speaker A: But looking forward to that. Plus, we have one of our new recruits. First game will be next week against Faith for the men's soccer team. So looking forward to that as well. With all that said, it's gonna be an exciting, another exciting week for the Emmaus Eagles. Keep in touch on social media, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, whatever it is, whatever your source is. Again, sorry for all the live stream errors we've had. We're trying. We have. And currently fixing the Wi Fi problems. I don't think we had issues this last weekend. So thumbs up to that. And hopefully no issues next Tuesday for our only home game for this next week. So please keep in touch. You know, share your love, share the video, subscribe and everything you can. And thank you so much for making us a part of your day. We appreciate your love and your support and your prayers and everything. So yes, Talon Club, you want to talk about the talent?
[00:34:36] Speaker B: Yes. Shout out to you, Talon club members if you are interested in becoming a talent club member. Please, please check that out on our website. It's one way that you can get your season passes for all of our home games this year as well as partner with our athletic teams and sponsor them. So it's a great opportunity. There's various levels. One of them is joining us on a podcast which could be pretty fun.
[00:34:57] Speaker A: So.
Yeah, right?
[00:34:59] Speaker B: So yeah, definitely check out the talent club online.
[00:35:02] Speaker A: And then we already mentioned Discovery Mace weekend happening in the first weekend of October as well as homecoming. Homecoming weekend, which used to be parents and alumni weekend, rebranded homecoming. So if you're confused, that's what it is. That is in next two weeks.
[00:35:18] Speaker B: A.
[00:35:18] Speaker A: Lot of home games that weekend as well. So looking forward to athletics throughout that week as well as seeing old faces.
[00:35:28] Speaker B: Eagles of all ages.
[00:35:29] Speaker A: Eagles. Not, not like old people, but like, you know what I mean?
[00:35:32] Speaker B: Older alumni.
[00:35:33] Speaker A: But yeah, I. Grandpa Eagles, Grandma eagles, baby eagles.
So looking forward to all that. Stay in touch, stay connected. And thank you for all your support and love. Matthew. What day is it?
[00:35:44] Speaker B: Jane? It's a great day to be an eagle.
