Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: There's a lot of, A lot of moments throughout the game where there's just flashes of just beautiful passing, beautiful teamwork, unselfishness, and it was, it was awesome.
And welcome back, ladies and gentlemen, to the official Emmaus athletic podcast. In the Nest, I'm your co host Shane Douglas, here with other co host Matthew Tomlinson. He's back and better. Man, I really feel like that intro is getting faster. I don't know why am I changing up? I got to speed it. I feel like, I don't know, maybe I'm adding words. I do that. I add words.
[00:00:34] Speaker B: Either way, sometimes we both do. Yeah, we're kind of wordy sometimes.
[00:00:37] Speaker A: Either way, everybody, thank you for making us part of your day and for tuning in to in the Nest this week. Episode a lot. What number are we on? Will calc on episode 18.
[00:00:51] Speaker B: 18.
[00:00:52] Speaker A: 18 for the season three.
[00:00:53] Speaker B: Episode 18.
[00:00:54] Speaker A: Season three, episode 18. And man, if you are a listener who has listened to every single one, and I know you can't prove it, just like when we break. Like when Emmaus athletes break a record.
[00:01:04] Speaker B: We don't know, but we think so.
[00:01:08] Speaker A: If you have watched every single episode, give us, give us a holler, maybe.
[00:01:13] Speaker B: Give a thumbs up in the chat.
[00:01:14] Speaker A: Maybe we'll give you some, some new Emas University merch. Oh, yeah, right. But let's be honest. The Lord knows, right?
[00:01:21] Speaker B: The Lord knows indeed.
[00:01:22] Speaker A: But let us know if you've been listening to at least this season, season three, all 18 episodes, maybe we'll, we'll hook you up, find us at a basketball game. And speaking of basketball games. Matt.
[00:01:32] Speaker B: Yes, Shane?
[00:01:33] Speaker A: I made it to you did.
[00:01:35] Speaker B: I know. I. During certain lineups, you're like, oh my God, I'm at the game. I'm like, shane, you're at the game.
[00:01:42] Speaker A: I'm right here.
[00:01:43] Speaker B: Yeah, A lot of say that it took 17 games to finally get to one, but you're. You were there, you were there. And that's.
[00:01:49] Speaker A: Well, here's the thing. Like when you say like that, it really sounds bad, but honestly, what it is is this is the very first game I was actually able to make it to where I had nothing going on.
[00:01:58] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:01:58] Speaker A: Either I'm not traveling or I'm not in a wedding or whatever. Boom, I'm here, I'm here.
[00:02:05] Speaker B: Christmas party.
[00:02:06] Speaker A: I already. Yes. No, that's. I mean, thank you. Yeah, you listen. I mean, I walked. I walked it through the land.
[00:02:11] Speaker B: And last up, I've listened to all the episodes this year.
[00:02:14] Speaker A: I actually don't. I don't want to listen to you. So it's me.
But no, I actually.
[00:02:21] Speaker B: Are you one of those people that just like I hate hearing myself.
[00:02:23] Speaker A: No, I'm not. It's just I already know what we talk about, so why do I want to listen again? I did at the beginning listen to for like pointers of like what I can do better and I, I, I'll still. But now I just hear it from people so they'll do you guys do the work for me. And like Shane, you really suck at everything, so you gotta work on that. And then so I'm trying. I really am. And one of the things I'm trying, I'm trying to get to the games right. Like I said, I, if I'm gonna be on this podcast, I gotta go to those games. I at least watch them. But I already watched.
[00:02:51] Speaker B: Yeah, at least you watch the live stream like the run backs of the.
[00:02:55] Speaker A: Games before I look at the stats. Know I, I do keep up, I talk to the players. But it was funny after both games yesterday, the women's team was like, Shane, you made it finally. And then the men's team, Landon was hard time.
[00:03:08] Speaker B: Landon call called you right as the women's game tipped off. And he's like, shane, I'm holding you accountable because you're not here yet.
[00:03:15] Speaker A: I came, I was supposed to have, it was supposed to be like a, like just a, a night for my wife and I to kind of get.
[00:03:23] Speaker B: Away with men's and women's basketball and.
[00:03:26] Speaker A: Breathe because we have both have busy schedule. She's a student, I'm in admissions and always traveling. Really? We usually have like a day where we just do nothing and that was yesterday.
[00:03:35] Speaker B: Crazy.
[00:03:36] Speaker A: That was yesterday. Or that was the, the Tuesday for during the games. But we made it work.
[00:03:42] Speaker B: So thank you.
[00:03:43] Speaker A: She was at the game.
[00:03:44] Speaker B: Thank you.
[00:03:44] Speaker A: So Rosie.
[00:03:45] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:03:45] Speaker A: Thank you, Rosie Douglas, for sacrifice.
[00:03:47] Speaker B: She doesn't listen to your evening.
[00:03:48] Speaker A: She told me she doesn't listen.
[00:03:49] Speaker B: I'm sure she doesn't.
[00:03:50] Speaker A: She's like, do you want me to listen to the podcast?
[00:03:52] Speaker B: I don't even know. I don't even think Rachel listens to this podcast.
[00:03:54] Speaker A: Shout out to our wives for listening.
[00:03:57] Speaker B: Support us in our podcast and shout.
[00:03:58] Speaker A: Out to every wife out there that supports their husband. We love you.
[00:04:00] Speaker B: Yes. Thank you.
[00:04:03] Speaker A: Just like our wives.
[00:04:04] Speaker B: Yep.
Don't maybe. I don't know.
[00:04:09] Speaker A: Well, this is fun. Long intro. Either way, guys, thank you for making us a part of your day. We appreciate it a lot. We always have a good time recording, talking about sports Fun things like how much our wives support us. And it's great stuff.
[00:04:23] Speaker B: Is great. All great stuff.
[00:04:26] Speaker A: But we, we got, we got a lot to talk about.
[00:04:29] Speaker B: We do, Shane.
[00:04:30] Speaker A: To discuss during this, this episode, so. But thank you for joining. And here's an update. Our women's basketball team, after, uh, a couple games this last week, our record now stands at 1 and 14. 1 and 14.
[00:04:47] Speaker B: 1 and 14.
[00:04:48] Speaker A: And then our. Well, we'll get to the men's basketball team. We're going to recap. Women's right now we're 1 in 14. Last night I was there, so I can talk about it a little bit. What a heartbreaker. Ladies and gentlemen.
[00:05:01] Speaker B: If you were Tuesday night madness.
[00:05:03] Speaker A: It was madness. If you're watching on a live stream, if you were there in person or if you heard it was a nail biter. Tied at 63. 63. With around 14. 17 seconds.
[00:05:14] Speaker B: 20 seconds left. And we had the ball.
[00:05:16] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:05:17] Speaker B: And we turned it over.
[00:05:18] Speaker A: Turned it over.
Then there's 17 seconds left. They used up the entire time. Drove in for a layup. Time expiring. Shoot. The layup clock is dead. Foul. Tweet. Foul. Go to line.
[00:05:34] Speaker B: 1 seconds on the clock.
[00:05:35] Speaker A: She goes to the line to Mount Mercy.
[00:05:38] Speaker B: Mount Mary.
[00:05:38] Speaker A: Mount Mary player goes to the line. Keep saying. Mount Mercy is a, A town just south of us. Mount Mary's one of their players. Go to the line.
[00:05:46] Speaker B: Makes both free throws.
[00:05:47] Speaker A: Makes both free throws. And we lose. So close.
[00:05:50] Speaker B: And it stinks. Because when the girls, when the women played them last semester back in November, they lost by four points up at their place.
[00:05:58] Speaker A: Wow.
[00:05:59] Speaker B: So four points and two points.
[00:06:01] Speaker A: Ah, I mean, I said it last week. Our girls are in every game, most games. And they're g. They're. They're a shocking team sometimes. And we see that in our, in our conference.
[00:06:10] Speaker B: They really are. I mean, the most they've lost is 25. No, they. I think, yeah, 25 was it. No, it's the Calvary. That's the biggest loss they've had. Everything has been 20 and under.
[00:06:19] Speaker A: Yeah. Faith and Calvary have been the biggest or the hardest opponents our women's team have played this year. Everything else they've been in, they've been pretty close.
[00:06:29] Speaker B: I mean, they're really close.
[00:06:30] Speaker A: I mean, they're the opposite of the Kansas City Chiefs. They are in some way, right.
[00:06:34] Speaker B: They're in every game. They're just not quite there to get into the win column.
[00:06:39] Speaker A: And it's tough, and I'm sure that's. And I hope it's not too discouraging for our, our women.
And I know Cody, I know there's a lot of support around them on the team, off the team, in the community here. So shout out to you, to you ladies on our women's team. We were thankful for, you know, just the time you put in, but the hard work. Right. And shout out to Cody & Co. For preparing you guys every week to be in these games. Yes, you're in these games. Right. So it was a 65, 63 loss last night.
[00:07:13] Speaker B: Tuesday night.
[00:07:14] Speaker A: Tuesday night. Yeah, you're right.
[00:07:15] Speaker B: The Division 3 opponent, Mount Mary, they're ballers too. They are. And we, we, I mean our girls played pretty good. I mean we scored. The fact we scored 63 points is impressive. I think we've only been averaging like 45 points a game. So to get almost 20 points above the average is really good. I mean good standout performances from Aaron, 17 points. Kate had a double double, 15 points, 13 rebounds. And Rachel had another good game. 15 points, 11 rebounds.
[00:07:38] Speaker A: Double double over here.
[00:07:39] Speaker B: Double double machine.
And then looking back on last Friday.
[00:07:43] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:07:44] Speaker B: Against the number five ranked Calvary at the time. So new polls have come out since that game, but they were ranked fifth.
[00:07:49] Speaker A: At the time in the nation.
[00:07:50] Speaker B: In the nation. Good team.
[00:07:52] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:07:53] Speaker B: Yeah. We just could not score that game. I mean we lost 62, 33, so 29 point loss. I mean we shot 31% overall over 10 from the three three point line.
32 turnovers really the difference in the game. But that, and you know we shot 45 times compared to Calvary's 78 times.
[00:08:15] Speaker A: Yeah, like that, that's crazy.
[00:08:17] Speaker B: Really tough. That's really tough.
[00:08:19] Speaker A: I mean when you, when you have that many turnovers and when you know the difference of shot selection and, and, and or shots, shots is of course you're going to have an outcome like that.
[00:08:30] Speaker B: Yeah. And Calvary didn't shoot the ball well either. That game it was just, we had 32 tournament overs which gave them, I think they had maybe 10 offensive rebounds. So they got basically 40 extra possessions and yeah.
[00:08:41] Speaker A: And I'm no hate, but that's been a common theme for women's team is turnovers. Lots of turnovers.
[00:08:47] Speaker B: Well, and even in that game like it was like going into I think in the third quarter at one point and same with Faith the week before, like it was like five point game.
[00:08:56] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:08:57] Speaker B: And then just fourth quarter hits when we're tired because we don't have any depth. And, and at the end of the.
[00:09:03] Speaker A: Day, Matt, we wanted, we Want to, we want to present you guys a good, respectable. Yeah. Respectful. Respectful and accurate summary of the games. And if there's a game where we can look at for any team across the board all year, say that team was just better. That was that we still played really well, but they were just better. The thing is, is you can probably, you can definitely say Calvary is a better team, but when you have that margin, those, those statistics of turnover, it's just shots. It's, it's, it's. It makes a huge game changer. And of course there's going to be turnovers. So there's going to be more a team that takes more shots and has, has a bet more possession. But if you take, like I said, if you minimize the turnovers specifically just that area, it's, it changes the game. Right. It might not be as. It might not be like a crazy change where it's 62 to 61, but maybe it's 62 to 50.
[00:10:08] Speaker B: Right. And I think, I think it just shows between week to week, obviously different opponents, but the fact that the ladies only scored 33 points on Friday, but then answered back on Tuesday and scored 63 points, that's a 30 point difference. That's a lot. That's a big difference. And so, you know, props to them for, you know, making those adjustments to score the basketball and then honestly. Yeah.
[00:10:30] Speaker A: Not to throw you on spot. Do you know how many turnovers there were there was in the Tuesday night game?
[00:10:35] Speaker B: I believe it was in the 20s.
[00:10:38] Speaker A: 20S.
[00:10:38] Speaker B: In the 20s. I don't know.
[00:10:39] Speaker A: And what do you. What would you say? Matt, you've been a mar on basketball longer than I have and a lot of the listeners as well, at least like not just a fan but part of it coaching and playing. What would you say is a. And this. I'm not trying to like really shade the women's team or anybody. I just am genuinely curious is what is the average amount of turnovers you would. You would want as a coach? Not want, but more desirable. Realistic.
[00:11:06] Speaker B: I mean, I mean under 12.
[00:11:10] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:11:10] Speaker B: Like in the 10 to 12 range is like really good.
[00:11:13] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:11:13] Speaker B: But like, I mean for. If we can keep it under 20 for the girl for the ladies team.
[00:11:19] Speaker A: It'S like that it changes.
[00:11:20] Speaker B: It's a good game. Yeah.
[00:11:21] Speaker A: Yeah. And I'm curious to look at previous games and maybe we can do this as we get closer to conference and regional play and. Or even just recapping the seasoning, looking at the games where it was. There were. It was a nail biter or the games that we won and looking at the difference of stats of the shot takes, the turnover margin and really look at. And then points scored off turnovers to really look at that and see what was the difference. Because our ladies are playing much better than. Than what a lot of people thought they would this year. They've really come together. Cody and company have put them in a place to succeed. They've come together as a sisterhood. As always. They're sometimes the best. It's hard. It's so funny because we always talk about who has the best family dynamic. Right. And we. When it. When in season, we're like, oh, the women's team. Oh, the men's team. Oh, this, this, that.
So they all have a fantastic family. Every sport here does. And especially the men's this year. This has probably been one of the closest men's basketball team the Christ Centered that we've had in such a long time. And we'll.
[00:12:30] Speaker B: I've been here in 10 years. Yes.
[00:12:31] Speaker A: And we'll get there. We'll get to the men's. But it is exciting to see what the. What Cody and company and the women have done.
[00:12:38] Speaker B: Talent isn't there, but Cody is preparing them well enough that they're able to be there.
[00:12:45] Speaker A: And when you say talent, like the depth.
[00:12:48] Speaker B: The depth, there's not a lot.
[00:12:49] Speaker A: Not that hard. Ladies aren't talented. They're not talented.
[00:12:51] Speaker B: We got some talent on the team, but just across the board of, you know, it's not as like, I mean, going in, I think every game but one game we've been better. The better team. Right. And so, you know, which we'll get there. We'll get there when. When we get recruits coming in and everything. But Cody is preparing them well enough that that's kind of not been as big of an issue because they've had that opportunity again, if we can just fix the turnovers, which I know he's been working on really hard. And so. But they're right there. Like you said, like, they're. They're in every game. You know, the face value. You know, teams walk in like, oh, we're going to smack Emmaus. And they don't. Yeah, they don't. And so. Which, you know, could turn some heads, you know, potentially in conference.
[00:13:36] Speaker A: Like, that's what I'm saying.
[00:13:37] Speaker B: Like you said, like first round of conference, no matter who you play, no matter if you're the two seed playing the seven seed or you're the three seed playing the six seed, those games are always Tough because it's postseason and I'm.
[00:13:47] Speaker A: That's what I'm saying.
[00:13:48] Speaker B: Hard. Sorry. It is hard to beat a team three times in a season. It is very, very hard.
[00:13:55] Speaker A: And that's what I, that's what I'm saying is watch out for our women's team when it comes to conference or regional play. Yeah, we might have to play the two seed depending on how conference works. Which we'll talk more about conference play, seating, tournament, how it all works when we get closer. We're about four weeks out.
[00:14:12] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:14:13] Speaker A: Four weeks out from conference, five from regional.
[00:14:15] Speaker B: Seasons flown by cow.
[00:14:17] Speaker A: But our team, but our, our women's team can definitely make an impact in a game and scare a couple teams. Really set them off the rocker of wow. We thought we were gonna. They might still. Our women's team might still lose but they're gonna make it tough for opponent when it comes to tournament play. So really looking forward to that as much as you want. We, we talk about some of the, the, the. The discouraging things of the women's team but we want to bring an accurate reading to you guys of what is the issue. The most of the issue is, is going to be the depth and going to be the turnovers with our women's team. But be encouraged, our women on our team be encouraged because you guys are doing a fantastic job this year for, for what you have and Cody doing a great job preparing you guys. So Matt and I and a lot of the fans are excited to see what you guys are doing for the. What you will be doing for the rest of the season. Going in a tournament play for conference and regionals.
[00:15:21] Speaker B: Yeah. Like this is them laying the foundation for Cody's program. Come. So yeah, lots of good things.
[00:15:27] Speaker A: It is encouraging and we see you, we see the work you guys put in on the court as a family, a sisterhood. And that's the most important part. And you guys are all the women on the basketball team are just such strong God fearing women and keep it up. It's extremely encouraging seeing that in our athletes here. Knowing that our athletes know what comes.
[00:15:50] Speaker B: First and it's nice to be like. Exactly. Because like, you know, it's tough when you, when you're losing games, so many games. It's hard. But when you have that ultimate mindset of what's the real reason that we're doing this. Yeah. Losing stinks are our goal is we want to compete and we want to win. But you know, at the end of the day our identity is in Christ and So having that as the focal point of what we do, you know, doesn't make it any easier, but it helps a lot. For sure. For sure.
[00:16:15] Speaker A: Well, we have some upcoming games for our women's team.
[00:16:17] Speaker B: Yes, we have three upcoming games. So tomorrow, Friday at 6pm Our women's team takes on Maranatha. Our only win of the season so far. Maranatha right now is oh and 16. Yep. So to get that second win right now, actually, the women are one and one in region play right now.
[00:16:36] Speaker A: Oh, that's good.
[00:16:37] Speaker B: Yep. So if they can win tomorrow, they go to two in one.
[00:16:40] Speaker A: Yeah. And apparently, and that depends on how region play stands up, because sometimes some.
[00:16:45] Speaker B: Some sports will do power ratings, some will do head to head matchups. I think we're doing power ratings, and.
[00:16:51] Speaker A: Sometimes they don't count every head to head. So.
[00:16:54] Speaker B: Which is interesting.
[00:16:55] Speaker A: But we'll talk more into. We'll talk more into that later in the month as we get closer to. As we get closer to regionals, get closer to conference. So you know where we stand.
[00:17:05] Speaker B: And hopefully we know too.
[00:17:06] Speaker A: It's true. That is true.
[00:17:07] Speaker B: Yep. So then on Saturday, Senior Day, Senior day for men's and women's basketball, we play Ozark. Right now, the Ozark women are ranked third in the nation, so. And then on next Monday, our women play Faith here, and Faith is ranked seventh in the nation.
[00:17:24] Speaker A: Sharon's coming home.
[00:17:25] Speaker B: Sharon's coming home. So kind of a tough schedule ahead for our women. So it's gonna be. It's gonna be tough, but it's gonna be good because three home games in four days. It's gonna be crazy.
[00:17:34] Speaker A: Friday, Saturday, Monday, one regional and two conferences. One region, two conference, which is pretty much the entire. The rest of the schedule.
[00:17:40] Speaker B: The last region game of the year, and then five conference games and then postseason boom.
[00:17:45] Speaker A: And I'm not even gonna say anything about the marinatha game this Friday, you know, just not. I'm not. That's. I mean, is that me saying something? I hope not.
[00:17:53] Speaker B: I don't say there's pressure, but there's. We haven't lost yet to Marina. Say that this year.
[00:17:58] Speaker A: Don't say that. That's like the commentator jinx, dude.
[00:18:01] Speaker B: You guaranteed it though, two years ago.
[00:18:03] Speaker A: Oh, my gosh.
[00:18:04] Speaker B: The highest viewed video. Oh, so that's up for the women. Yes. And Shane, want to talk about some nationally ranked stats real quick for our women's team because we want to talk about the positives right now. Aaron McKenna is ranked a lot of positives, 13 in the nation. In scoring 15.2 points a game.
[00:18:22] Speaker A: Wow.
[00:18:22] Speaker B: Shout out, Aaron. Rachel Barrett, man, she's a stat monster right now. Number one in the nation in rebounding, 13.3 rebounds a game. Number five in the nation in free throw percentage at 85%. Rachel, you need to shoot more and get to the line because you score the basketball that way. And Rachel is number four in the nation in blocks per game, 1.7. And then currently Matty Wiest is sitting 13th in the nation in three pointers per game at 2.1 threes made per game.
[00:18:51] Speaker A: Very nice.
[00:18:52] Speaker B: So good things going on for the women's team because, like, I think you think about previous years, like the. Like when. Volleyball a couple years ago, when they were winless, you know, women's team, like, three years ago, like, we didn't have anyone high in the stats category.
But this year we do, which is encouraging because, you know, like, we keep saying they're. They're there. Like, the talent is there.
[00:19:13] Speaker A: We do have it.
[00:19:14] Speaker B: We just need depth.
[00:19:15] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:19:16] Speaker B: And talent in the depth. But. So, yeah, good things ahead. Going to be a crazy. Pretty busy week, but Senior day on. On Saturday to honor our four seniors of Kate Jansen, Nellie Hopkins, Maddie. We.
Jenna and Jenna lost. Utter.
[00:19:35] Speaker A: So looking. So that's gonna be fun. A lot of family's gonna be in town. It's Winterfest weekend. No classes. Friday, pretty much. Campus is going to be split up into different teams with a mysterious theme. It's gonna be fun. It's a good theme this year, but.
[00:19:49] Speaker B: You know the theme.
[00:19:51] Speaker A: Yes, I do. It's gonna be a good one.
[00:19:53] Speaker B: It's gonna be good. Winterfest is so fun. For those that know Winterfest is basically like our homecoming. There's a lot of fun around it, A lot of skits, a lot of games, a lot of interactive things, and it's a. It's a big thing that, you know, we loved it when we were students. And there's just. It's. It's a lot of fun.
[00:20:08] Speaker A: It's the biggest event ever of the year for EMEA students. Everyone gets split up into teams. You compete against each other for bragging rights as well as a winner's meal either catered or made from the kitchen. Oh, yeah.
[00:20:20] Speaker B: Friday night.
[00:20:21] Speaker A: Friday classes are canceled because Friday nights are canceled. We go to ski lodge in town.
We'd give discounts for skiing and snowboarding for our students.
[00:20:29] Speaker B: Fun.
[00:20:30] Speaker A: So it's. And they play a lot of games. They compete against each other. It's. And then skits, like you said. So Lots of fun stuff. And it's a Thursday evening all day Friday and Saturday.
[00:20:39] Speaker B: There might be some halftime games this weekend. So if you're in town, come to the. Come to the games. So you might be able to participate in some halftime festivities.
[00:20:47] Speaker A: And there's gonna be families in town too. So if you're alum or supportive of school or obviously if your kid, one of your. Your kid is a student here, come on out this weekend because it's gonna. It should be packed. It should be packed. Pack the jack but pollen. Pack the pollard.
[00:21:01] Speaker B: Pack the pollard. Pack the nest.
[00:21:03] Speaker A: Protect the nest.
[00:21:04] Speaker B: Protect the nest.
[00:21:05] Speaker A: Ptn well, we're going to move on to our men's team.
Pretty similar games.
Number of games that were played.
So three. Three games.
Two games. That's right. One from Friday and one from Tuesday. So Friday we played Central Calvary. Calvary? Why'd I say Central? That was the other week. Other c. Other weekend.
Friday we played Calvary and was the outcome. Matt A w my man.
[00:21:38] Speaker B: We beat Calvary for the second time this season, which is great. We beat them 78 to 71 at home.
Kind of a weird game, you know, this season scoring has been, I won't say easy, but we've been a scoring team this year. Like we've had, we've had a number of games. I don't know how many games.
Eight. I don't know that we've scored nine year more points or at least 85.
[00:22:03] Speaker A: That's a lot too.
[00:22:04] Speaker B: What's a lot of points on, let's see on that Friday. No, our scoring wasn't necessarily there. As easy as it has been, you know, I mean 70 points is still a good number. But the fact we've been scoring in the 80s and the 90s. But our defense, we played a lot better defense than we have been playing because usually we score a lot but we also give up a lot. And so we were able to play well. Hold Calvary to 71 points. They did get some easy buckets at the end of the game. So like we kind of like we were up by like 10 or 13 or something and kind of let up some, some easy baskets just so we didn't get any fouls. And then we did miss a number. Like our free throw shooting has been really bad this year. But you know, big, big part of the game was Tatum. Tatum had 39 points and 12 rebounds. He's averaging and he was six point. He had a six for six from the three point line on Friday.
[00:23:02] Speaker A: That's nice.
[00:23:03] Speaker B: All three was made. He's averaging 27.2 points a game.
[00:23:06] Speaker A: That's nice.
[00:23:06] Speaker B: I know. So that was. That was big. Nash had 10 points, eight assists, and five rebounds. And it was one of those games where, like, yeah, Tatum had 39 points. But then, you know, after that, it was like, you know, everyone contributed, you know, basically, like, five to 10 points. And so it was. It was. It was a good team win, a great team win. Our team has been hit with the flu going around.
[00:23:26] Speaker A: Everybody has.
[00:23:27] Speaker B: Like, Eli was really sick. Collier was really sick. Jared didn't dress because he was hurt, and he. Or he was sick. Like, even. Even Nash was a little sick. His shoulder was bugging him. So, like. And we've been sick, but, like, fortunately, like, now is like. I mean, it's never a good time to be hurt or to be sick, but, you know, it's not tournament time, so it's like, it's good that we're getting better now. Hopefully this sickness out of the way now. And so, yeah, it was good. I mean, it stinked. Calvary's missing their best player because he got hurt a couple games prior. But it's always great to play them and play and see with Coach Sanders because he's a. He's a great man. He's a great man. He was Coach Parker's mentor.
[00:24:02] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:24:03] Speaker B: Because Coach Parker's from Calvary. He learned under Coach Sanders, and I've. I just. He's a great. I love him.
[00:24:07] Speaker A: Calvary is one of our favorite teams to play.
I have. We have good, sweet fellowship with him most of the time across the sports.
[00:24:15] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:24:16] Speaker A: So it's always great, which is nice. So it's always great to have a win. What are some of the. The stats there? So Tatum had 39, you said?
[00:24:21] Speaker B: Yep, 39 12. Six for six. Yeah. So. And that. And then on Tuesday, we played the rivalry game, Moody Bible Institute, so.
[00:24:31] Speaker A: And I was there for that one.
[00:24:32] Speaker B: You were that. So. Thank you, Shane. Yeah. It's always. It's always. Yeah, we did. Sure. We. We beat Moody, 8160. So another great defensive performance, and we held them to 60 points. Like, that's big one. Really good. I mean, we're up by 81's big.
[00:24:47] Speaker A: That's a quiet 81 game. I'm not gonna lie.
[00:24:49] Speaker B: I felt like we played not that great offensively, and we still had 81 points.
[00:24:53] Speaker A: It was off and on, for sure.
[00:24:55] Speaker B: Yeah. But, I mean, it was quiet, guys. Yeah.
[00:24:58] Speaker A: I'm telling you that. It wasn't just quiet because, like, the Fan section was very weak or non existent. My gosh. Students come on.
[00:25:07] Speaker B: Like the men's animals.
[00:25:09] Speaker A: Do you want all the faculty and staff to like forum a student section? Because I'm sure we could and it.
[00:25:14] Speaker B: Would be 20 times better than Dr. Parcher. Are cheering louder than like 2/3 RC? Yeah.
[00:25:20] Speaker A: Wendy Abdy out here is jumping up.
[00:25:22] Speaker B: And down like kidding me.
[00:25:23] Speaker A: Laura Rason or she's on the the books. But like my gosh, guys, like I.
[00:25:29] Speaker B: Mean that girls game was so exciting. Like crap at the game.
[00:25:31] Speaker A: I know it's Tuesday and you got studying going on, but take a study break, okay? I know.
[00:25:37] Speaker B: Get your chicken wings, dinner, grab a box and come to the game.
[00:25:40] Speaker A: Freaking wing night. Who? Who cares? People got their wings. They ate them up. They came over. Okay? Eat something else, go somewhere else. A lot of you got chick fil A. I don't want to hear. There's no excuses. I don't care if it's a Tuesday night game. This is my first game and I was just disappointed in all you students. I was. I'm ranting right now. Okay? This is ridiculous.
[00:25:59] Speaker B: So Shane had a bad.
[00:26:00] Speaker A: And I know you probably don't even.
[00:26:01] Speaker B: Listen to this but he's back now at the game. So come to the games guys, please support.
[00:26:05] Speaker A: And then I just sit there the whole time. But thank you for coming. The students who do come.
[00:26:09] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:26:10] Speaker A: Great. We need to stand the whole game, right? Like defense, chance. Right? Scream on off.
[00:26:15] Speaker B: I don't wanna, I don't wanna. Yeah, I don't want to sound mean for this group of students but like when we were students, we are totally cool.
[00:26:22] Speaker A: We were just better than all of you. And it's, it's, it proves it because you know who has banners up there? Our time. Not yours, not yours.
[00:26:33] Speaker B: Come to games.
[00:26:33] Speaker A: I'm done.
[00:26:34] Speaker B: But yes, it was, it was nice. We had a good defensive performance. Like we said, quiet 81.
[00:26:39] Speaker A: I mean outside of the Cinderella run, there's no banners from the last like five years.
[00:26:44] Speaker B: My senior is the last banner for men's basketball and then like 2021.
[00:26:49] Speaker A: And fans help.
If you think fans don't help, you're wrong.
[00:26:53] Speaker B: You don't know sports.
[00:26:54] Speaker A: What are you thinking? Yeah, it's ridiculous. Okay, you can help. And this goes out to all the alum too in the Dubuque area are going to make and drive parents drive. We've had a lot of parents, especially volleyball parents shout out to them. They'd be driving like 7 hours to watch their kids play crazy. You guys live Like a minute away from the gym, in the dorms. Come on. Okay, I think I'm done. I think I'm done.
[00:27:21] Speaker B: One more. One more. Okay, you're done. I'm just kidding.
But yeah, it was good. It was a good game. Tatum had a great game, 27 points, 15 rebounds. Nash had nine points, 12 assists. Collier had 11 points. Eli had 14 points. So it's good, a good team win. It was a quiet game on Monday, Tatum Arguello was awarded the NCCAA Division 2 Men's Basketball student Athlete of the Week.
[00:27:44] Speaker A: Don't do it.
[00:27:45] Speaker B: Yes. Because of his two performances last week where he averaged 39 and a half points per game and nine and a half rebounds and two wins.
[00:27:52] Speaker A: It was an off night for him.
[00:27:55] Speaker B: Didn't. I mean, because, like, on. On the game against Calvary at 39 points off 16 shots. That is crazy. Like, I felt like he had, like, an off game, but he didn't. But it's like 27 points on an off against Moody. Crazy.
[00:28:08] Speaker A: Yeah. 27 off night.
[00:28:10] Speaker B: Yeah. So that put us three. One in the region and 11 and six overall, which is the most wins that we've had since the 2022 season and the 2018. Or, sorry, 2014 season.
[00:28:23] Speaker A: And of course, like. Like, we've been always saying we don't know what is a record or not, because our athletic department is relatively new.
[00:28:35] Speaker B: Or relatively new on keeping track of definitely that history.
[00:28:39] Speaker A: But also, I mean, our basketball, Our men's basketball team is the only team that's really been around since the past 2000 or earlier than 2010, because volleyball.
[00:28:46] Speaker B: And soccer's first year was 2009.
[00:28:48] Speaker A: Yeah. And that. And they started as a club.
[00:28:50] Speaker B: Yeah. Clubs.
[00:28:51] Speaker A: And they really didn't. Yeah. Nothing they really did counted until they joined. Joined.
[00:28:56] Speaker B: Joined as an intercollegiate.
[00:28:57] Speaker A: Yeah. N. Double C. Double A. So I don't know, man.
[00:29:03] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:29:03] Speaker A: Because then we got that one guy who scored, what, like, 30 plus goals or something like that. But that was when it was club.
[00:29:09] Speaker B: Yeah. So it's like.
[00:29:10] Speaker A: Like. Yeah, that counts, but then also doesn't. It doesn't. It was close, so who knows, you know, either way, Tatum had a off game, but it was. It was 8,000, 160. Matt, my perspective is, is it's a quiet 81. It wasn't too flashy. And of course, a lot of it had to do with, you know, some. Some dominance over Moody.
[00:29:31] Speaker B: I mean, I mean, we could have scored probably 95, but I mean, the. We were up by enough that the bench got in, so the guys that don't get a play got to play so great.
[00:29:38] Speaker A: Yeah. But still, I was waiting for Jared to get the ball. I knew he was gonna take a shot right away. Right away, but he never got the ball.
Either way, though.
Yeah. I. I was telling you guys this during lunch is. There's a lot of. A lot of moments throughout the game, especially in the second half, where there's just flashes of just beautiful passing.
[00:30:01] Speaker B: Oh, yeah.
[00:30:01] Speaker A: Beautiful teamwork, unselfishness. And it was. It was awesome. It was really great to see all the guys just really clicking, and everybody was just in sync. They knew what the other person was thinking. They knew where they were. They. On the court. Great vision, great teamwork, passing the ball. I don't. I think there's one possession, nobody even dribbled on the inbound, and it was passed all the way down to. I think it was Eli who made a layup or something like that.
[00:30:26] Speaker B: Yeah, it was.
[00:30:27] Speaker A: And nobody landed.
[00:30:28] Speaker B: It was Landon.
[00:30:28] Speaker A: Maybe one person dribbled either way. Super cool. Love to see that. And I think if the team plays more like that, plays more unselfish ball, but also being able to shoot well, take the shots and pass like they.
[00:30:41] Speaker B: Did, and be kind of scary.
[00:30:42] Speaker A: It'd be really scary against any of these teams and in conference or regionals. And as we talked multiple times just in the past, is basketball conference, men's basketball conference, up for grabs?
[00:30:54] Speaker B: Oh, yeah.
[00:30:56] Speaker A: And we'll see that this weekend. Yes, we play. Same teams say play Maranatha Friday.
[00:31:01] Speaker B: Yeah, Maranatha on Friday at 4pm so we get the early game.
[00:31:06] Speaker A: Nash is trying to change that.
[00:31:07] Speaker B: So it's gonna be an early game. So we'll. Yeah, we'll see how that goes. So, yeah, Maranatha currently 1 in 15 this season. Season. So what we call these things. We call it a trap game. Yeah, it is called a trap game because we are the better team. We should win. But we can't play.
[00:31:21] Speaker A: Can't play.
[00:31:22] Speaker B: Like, we can't play down. We got to play our game.
[00:31:24] Speaker A: So always happens when, like, the. The Owen 13 team, Cleveland Browns play you, right? Play your football team. You're like, man, we're gonna lose this week. And you do. Because that's trap game.
[00:31:34] Speaker B: It's trap game. Yeah, trap game. And then on Saturday. So, yeah, Senior day. So Senior day for Nash Harper and Landon Jacobus are seniors.
The ceremony for to honor the seniors will be in between the men's and women's game. So we play Ozark on Saturday, obviously. Ozark currently is the number one team in conference.
[00:31:52] Speaker A: Oh, I thought you're gonna say nation in conference.
[00:31:54] Speaker B: No, they're not ranked this week. And then on Monday, anybody in conference ranked. Manhattan is ranked sixth, I believe. But Ozark beat Manhattan.
[00:32:02] Speaker A: They just beat him. Yeah.
[00:32:03] Speaker B: And then on Monday, Faith comes to town and we play them on Monday at I think it's six.
[00:32:09] Speaker A: That's going to be fun.
[00:32:10] Speaker B: Yeah. So fun.
[00:32:11] Speaker A: And we don't play for the trophy until next year.
[00:32:14] Speaker B: Got it.
[00:32:15] Speaker A: And oh, yeah, we got to get that trophy.
[00:32:17] Speaker B: Yeah. And then looking at some quick stats real quick. Right now, your MAS men's basketball team is the number third ranked offense in the nation.
[00:32:25] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, baby.
[00:32:25] Speaker B: 85.3 points per game. Tatum Arguello, number two in the nation in points per game, 27.2. Nash Harper, number 11 as a 511 guard in the nation in rebounding. Oh, that's 7.3 rebounds. Again, Nash is number 11 in the nation at 7.3 rebounds.
[00:32:46] Speaker A: No, his height, 5'11 and then why do you do him like that?
[00:32:49] Speaker B: Also six foot, number one in the nation in assists per game at 7.6. So Nash is like split this year is like 13. Basically seven and a half. Seven and a half.
[00:32:59] Speaker A: He is, He. He kills it.
[00:33:01] Speaker B: It's crazy. And then Tatum and Josh are tied for 12th in threes per game at 2.5 threes made per competition.
[00:33:09] Speaker A: Yeah. Josh played against his twin brother.
[00:33:11] Speaker B: I know, like, Louis walked. He's like, when Josh grow a beard. Yeah, it's a twin.
[00:33:15] Speaker A: So many people are like, what? What?
[00:33:17] Speaker B: Yeah. So Josh Stewart's twin brother Aaron joined Moody on that semester. And so it was fun to see the stewards out there.
[00:33:24] Speaker A: Mr. Jacobus, the game announcer.
When Eric went in the game, Josh's brother, he was like, this isn't the Matrix.
[00:33:34] Speaker B: This is Aaron Stewart.
[00:33:36] Speaker A: Aaron. Aaron. Aaron Stewart. Yeah. So pretty cool. They. Pretty fun that they got to play against each other. They. They matched up against her only a couple times. Not too much.
[00:33:45] Speaker B: I think Aaron guarded Josh more than Josh might have guarded Aaron.
[00:33:48] Speaker A: Yeah. But nobody, nobody was able to like, embarrass the other brother. So maybe that was for the better thing. Yeah, probably for the good.
[00:33:55] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:33:55] Speaker A: But they, they hung out a little bit before the game.
[00:33:59] Speaker B: Yeah, Josh showed Aaron campus and everything.
[00:34:01] Speaker A: So that's really cool.
[00:34:02] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:34:03] Speaker A: And Josh played well.
[00:34:03] Speaker B: He.
[00:34:04] Speaker A: He started to. To flash a little bit towards the end of the game, which he played.
[00:34:08] Speaker B: He played a lot better.
[00:34:09] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. So I love it. I love what the men's team has rolling this year. It's really exciting.
11 wins. Record, as we know right now, is 13 wins in the season, which is kind of crazy, kind of low, I feel like.
[00:34:23] Speaker B: Yeah. So if you're an alum who played back in the day, can you let us know what your record was?
[00:34:28] Speaker A: Would we count what was the last conference we're in?
[00:34:31] Speaker B: The acca?
[00:34:34] Speaker A: We would probably count that, yeah.
[00:34:36] Speaker B: I mean, that was. That was when we had 13 and 11 wins.
[00:34:39] Speaker A: Oh, was it?
[00:34:40] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:34:40] Speaker A: I thought you said your year. We did, yeah.
[00:34:42] Speaker B: That My. My freshman year, we died at 13 wins.
[00:34:44] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:34:44] Speaker B: And we were in the ACCA. We weren't in the NCCA until 20. We didn't join back until 2018.
[00:34:52] Speaker A: Really?
[00:34:53] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:34:53] Speaker A: So soon. Oh, wow. See, we're still babies, guys.
[00:34:56] Speaker B: What's interesting, because I'm looking up real quick on my phone, but because we were. We've been in and out like three times, which is kind of interesting.
[00:35:04] Speaker A: That is very interesting. What about the N, double C, double the mccc. Cct.
[00:35:09] Speaker B: I think we've always been in the mccc, which has been.
Which has been good.
[00:35:15] Speaker A: Does the ac. What does he say?
[00:35:17] Speaker B: Acca.
[00:35:18] Speaker A: Do they still exist?
[00:35:19] Speaker B: They do currently.
Free Lutheran Bible College FBC hosts that tournament. Okay, so EMAs was a part of the NCCAA 1977-1978. And then they left for some reason. And then they. And then rejoined 1993 to 2012.
The NCAA, NCAA, NCCA, NC. And then after 2012, left again and then rejoined in 2017 and are in there each break.
[00:35:50] Speaker A: We're joining. Joining the.
[00:35:52] Speaker B: I don't. I don't know what. Like, I don't. I don't know if it was like, in that 2012 year, if they left because of. Maybe the ACCA was less expensive to be a part of or what.
[00:36:03] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:36:04] Speaker B: Or maybe. I. Yeah, I don't really know. But then when we rejoined in 2017, that was my senior year.
[00:36:10] Speaker A: Well, if I would say this, and of course, it's my word, nobody cares. But I would say if we are part of a conference for your collegiate sport here at Emmaus and you set a record, that counts. If you were a club, that does not count.
[00:36:20] Speaker B: Nope. Yep. So 2009, plus four.
Men's soccer, women's volleyball, and then. Yeah, I mean, around for forever. So.
[00:36:31] Speaker A: Which we know. We.
[00:36:32] Speaker B: We know those were always intercollegiate.
[00:36:34] Speaker A: We know for sure about cross country records.
[00:36:36] Speaker B: We do. We know very well.
[00:36:38] Speaker A: We're at a number two in the nation, baby.
[00:36:41] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:36:41] Speaker A: We actually had a recruit the other day come on campus yesterday.
[00:36:44] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:36:45] Speaker A: And you know, he's a pretty fast runner.
[00:36:46] Speaker B: He is. I mean, the slogan, the under the table slogan is watch out, Bob Jones.
[00:36:52] Speaker A: Yeah, watch out. We'll see. We'll see Bob Jones. Still, they ran away with the.
[00:36:56] Speaker B: The competition last year, seven in a row.
[00:36:58] Speaker A: Ozark has. Ozark has the fastest men runner.
Pretty clear. Like it's, it's just like he is very fast, guys. Super fast. They get a good team around that. Ozark's got a great shot of. Of taking that number one seed ends from. They weren't number two, but this is true.
[00:37:17] Speaker B: Also I saw. Speaking of that, the fall sports championship series, you get number of points based off of how you finish the season as far as like rankings. And I don't think we've been ranked in a very long time, but Emmaus for the fall is ranked number five in the nation for cross country. Four. No, for. For fall sports. Oh, between. Between.
[00:37:39] Speaker A: You hear that?
[00:37:39] Speaker B: Cross country, soccer and volleyball, we were at the fifth most.
[00:37:43] Speaker A: Fifth.
[00:37:43] Speaker B: Fifth most. Fifth.
[00:37:44] Speaker A: Fifth.
[00:37:45] Speaker B: Fifth. Fifth most points.
[00:37:47] Speaker A: Come on, Mike. Let's go, Mike.
[00:37:48] Speaker B: Which is really cool.
[00:37:49] Speaker A: Yeah, that's awesome.
[00:37:51] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:37:51] Speaker A: Shout out to fall sports.
[00:37:52] Speaker B: Shout out to fall sports.
[00:37:53] Speaker A: Give them an eagle.
[00:37:55] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:37:56] Speaker A: Goodness gracious. But speaking of recruits, if you are a recruit out there or you know someone who is a good basketball, volleyball runner, soccer player, send them our way. Fill the the recruiting app if you want to be recruited. Don't just come to campus.
[00:38:11] Speaker B: Expect to be recruited or you're a good fit. Then one of our coaches will reach out.
[00:38:16] Speaker A: Even if a coach reach out to. Reaches out to you, they will request for you to fill out that recruiting form. So fill that recruiting form out. That's the way to get scouted to get recruited here at Emas University. So.
But pass that information along if you know anybody. But that kind of does wait. Yeah, that kind of does it. We got Maranatha this weekend, Friday, Ozark Saturday, and Faith on Monday.
[00:38:42] Speaker B: Monday, Monday, Monday.
[00:38:44] Speaker A: So looking forward to all those. All home games.
And I think I'm home. I think I'm here for all last.
[00:38:50] Speaker B: Home games of the year.
[00:38:50] Speaker A: I think I'm here for the road after that. So. But thank you guys for making us a part of your day, whatever that may be in your routine. We are extremely thankful and grateful to be in this position to update you on Emmaus athletics. We're hoping to try to give you more spotlights of players. We say a lot of names up here. You might be saying to yourself as an alum who graduated 10 years ago or how long? Like maybe even 5 years ago. 4 years ago. Last year.
[00:39:18] Speaker B: Last year. Honestly.
[00:39:19] Speaker A: Who's that person? So we hope to give you some more updates and maybe bring on some more athletes and let you see. Because really, all you really know is Landon. Yep, that's it. Right? For basketball. For basketball. Ish. You know, so we hope to give you some more spotlights if that's during the season or after, maybe even through the summer. And some of the breaks to be a little more consistent with content. And of course, we say this a lot and sometimes it doesn't happen, Matt.
[00:39:46] Speaker B: Sometimes it doesn't happen. But we try our best.
[00:39:48] Speaker A: We. We're gonna try. We're gonna try, so. But either way, thank you guys so much for joining us.
Come out to the games this weekend, please. Drive up, whatever.
[00:39:58] Speaker B: Last home games of the year.
[00:39:59] Speaker A: Last home. Come on, students, you got. Oh, okay.
[00:40:04] Speaker B: Be there.
[00:40:05] Speaker A: Oh, my gosh.
Show up, show up, show out. We want to see you this weekend. Pack the pollard, protect the nest. Let's go, people. Thank you for joining us today. Thank you. Follow us on all these social media stuff as well. But, Matt, you know what day it is?
[00:40:21] Speaker B: You know what, Shane? I got two things today. It's always a great day to be Emmaus Bible School, Emmaus Bible College, or Emmaus University when we defeat Moody Bible Institute. That being said, it's a great day to be an Emmaus Eagle.
[00:40:35] Speaker A: I got nothing else.
