Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign.
[00:00:08] Speaker B: And welcome to in the Nest, your front row seats to Emmaus athletics. I'm your co host, Shane Douglas, here with Matthew Tomlinson. We are finally back, Matt.
[00:00:18] Speaker A: We are back, Shane.
[00:00:19] Speaker B: It's been a lot of. A lot of traveling, a lot of moving around and busyness the last this whole month, really, honestly. You just got back from a long trip.
[00:00:27] Speaker A: I did.
[00:00:27] Speaker B: How was it?
[00:00:28] Speaker A: It was good. We were down in Colorado for the week visiting family, seeing my grandma.
She's doing. She's hanging in there, so it's good to see her. Huge sports fan, by the way. She loves all college sports. She's been a big. Yeah, she's. She was at every single Illinois football game and basketball game from 1971 until 2012. Pretty crazy. And she's an avid watcher of Emmaus athletics, which is pretty awesome. But yeah, it's gonna be back, you know. Thank you fans out there. I know we've had two episodes in like four weeks, so my good apologies on that.
[00:01:03] Speaker B: Terrible.
[00:01:05] Speaker A: Our work travel schedule has just been super crazy lately. Like either one of us is gone or both of us are gone traveling repping for Emmaus. So thank you for your patience. But Shane, we're back.
[00:01:14] Speaker B: We are back.
[00:01:15] Speaker A: Tell me about you, how you've been.
[00:01:16] Speaker B: Yeah, and like to, to, to your point, before I get into that, is like we did a survey last year of our, our listeners and they would rather see both of us.
And no, no guest stars, like just taking over, like my eye roller Matt's role. So that's. That's from you guys? That's what you guys wanted. You guys wanted just, just us two and we are okay with that.
[00:01:36] Speaker A: Was that, was that survey just you and me or was.
[00:01:39] Speaker B: Doesn't matter how many people took this. It was from the listener.
[00:01:42] Speaker A: So speaking of surveys, every time we record, I have no idea what to do with my hands. I always feel like I'm either grabbing, I'm like, what do you do? Like you just, just hold them right?
[00:01:51] Speaker B: Like ready?
[00:01:53] Speaker A: Three point time.
[00:01:54] Speaker B: Dude, just, just relax, bro.
We're four years into this and Matt still doesn't know. Like camera etiquette. That's all right.
[00:02:01] Speaker A: Never.
[00:02:01] Speaker B: No, no, I've been all right. Just busy, man. Got tons of people coming to campus, a lot of other trips and stuff like that. I mean, that's our role here.
[00:02:10] Speaker A: Visits people visiting campus. Like we've had so many. And then we have like, I think tomorrow or today we have like six or five in the next five days.
[00:02:20] Speaker B: Today we have two.
[00:02:21] Speaker A: Crazy. Tomorrow we have three.
[00:02:23] Speaker B: Three. And then Monday we have two. And then Wednesday or third Tuesday we have one. So it's just like back to back. Like I'm busy for the next week. All just.
[00:02:31] Speaker A: It's praise the Lord that we're getting so many people.
[00:02:33] Speaker B: Hey, if you want to visit like we are here, I would love for you to visit mayors because then it prevents me from like always having to leave and like travel and go be on the road and being away from family and friends and Matt and you guys. So get the more visits so you can have Matt and Shane more consistent.
[00:02:51] Speaker A: You have church friends, grandkids.
[00:02:53] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:02:54] Speaker A: Cousins and nephews, nieces.
[00:02:55] Speaker B: And like, don't just get them here for visits, but get them here to join our athletics program because fall sports is almost over. Matt.
[00:03:03] Speaker A: It's crazy if they're good, but it's crazy.
[00:03:06] Speaker B: All sports is almost over.
[00:03:07] Speaker A: Like I think we have two races left until nationals and then we. In the last week of regular season, games for volleyball and soccer, which is, man.
[00:03:16] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:03:17] Speaker A: Flew by so quick. Basketball starting up. It's crazy.
[00:03:19] Speaker B: This is true. And soccer, we, we'll get into soccer right now is like soccer has had a, a roller coaster of a season.
Started off very hot.
[00:03:29] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:03:29] Speaker B: They've been in a drought.
[00:03:30] Speaker A: Yeah. Been a little tough.
[00:03:32] Speaker B: Is it time, is it time for soccer to finally get, get. Get their stuff together and get the ball rolling? Literally figured it out.
[00:03:40] Speaker A: I mean, Shane, there's no better game for today's game.
[00:03:44] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:03:45] Speaker A: At Maranatha. Oh, I mean, big competitor. We, we played them what, four games ago? Three games ago. You know, it was a 10 loss here in Dubuque.
[00:03:55] Speaker B: Shouldn't have been, man.
[00:03:55] Speaker A: Shouldn't have been. We had so many opportunities that we couldn't connect with. But I mean, yeah. What better game than today's game at Maranatha at 3pm than for them to get rolling? I mean, like you said, it's been in a drought.
Offensively, it's been a struggle. We've scored three goals in the last seven games and that's tough. Like it's hard. Like, I know, I know there, I know the team is discouraged, but I was, I was talking to Tucker the other day. I'm like, Tucker is putting our team in positions to win single handed. Like we are in basically every single game.
Defensively, because of Tucker Capus, we just can't score. Yeah. And in the, in that seven game stretch of three games, I mean, 061, it just shows like the importance of like we need to find that Offense. And I know, like, we've had people hurt. Like Jake's been banged up. You know, he missed a couple games or one game or whatever, but we gotta find some offense to get rolling. We have to.
[00:04:50] Speaker B: Yeah, no, I. I totally agree. The. The way the guys have played in the first half has been always very, very competitive. Very fast.
They. They. They check the boxes. It's like, we. We played a great first half. Now let's finish it.
[00:05:05] Speaker A: Let's do it.
[00:05:05] Speaker B: And if things fall apart in a second, right, And I don't. I don't think because of endurance, but more of just.
I. I don't know, things just falling apart.
[00:05:19] Speaker A: Yeah. Like, just you missing easy.
[00:05:22] Speaker B: But they play different. They play different in a second. And I encourage you guys to, like, watch the games and, like, see the team, because the record does not stand, does not emphasize the skill of this team. This team is very skillful. They are a lot of great young men on this team. Leaders on the field, leaders off the field.
But truly what it is is that drought you mentioned at the beginning of the goal. Drought. The. They've put themselves into positions, they've put themselves in the right area, have done the right things to put the ball in the back of the net, but the ball just.
It does.
[00:05:54] Speaker A: Doesn't go.
[00:05:54] Speaker B: It doesn't go there. So they. They've had the opportunities. It's not that we're losing these games, 4:1 or, you know, 1:0 or whatever it may be. It's. It's. We're missing these opportunities.
[00:06:07] Speaker A: I know, like.
[00:06:07] Speaker B: And, like, to Tucker's point. Or not. Not to Tucker's point, but to just, you know, glaze him even more. But t. Like, with Tucker's excellent play this year, which it won't look that excellent on the stat sheet, sadly, but with his excellent play this year and the opportunities that we do have that we're not able to capitalize on, it's.
[00:06:28] Speaker A: There could be a big difference.
[00:06:29] Speaker B: A huge difference. It's almost like in. In football when, like the Kansas. The St. A huge stat at the beginning of the year was the Kansas City Chiefs and how they were like.
I think it was like the last four years, there were like 30 and like two in. In games.
Games within one score, you know, and it's like the matter of just minutes, the matter of one possession, a matter of one mistake to one shading. Hey, dude, there is some bad officiating.
[00:06:59] Speaker A: Sorry. Hope Sanders, man.
[00:07:02] Speaker B: And. Or. No, not the Chiefs game. I'm talking about soccer, man.
[00:07:04] Speaker A: Oh, the soccer.
[00:07:05] Speaker B: Like oh, like, okay, sure, I'm talking about the Chiefs with the refs and Marion Patrick Mahomes. I get it. But this is to a point of our team and just we're on the other end.
[00:07:16] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:07:16] Speaker B: Not being able to win those close games. And typically, like, I mean, A team goes up two zero, there's 20 minutes left and you know, given our, our play in the second half, you know, things kind of just fall apart and teams are able to. To pat the. The stats and whatnot.
[00:07:33] Speaker A: And that was kind of what happened this last, this last week or the last two weeks, I guess. You know, only two games we played. We played against the number six team.
Oh yeah.
[00:07:42] Speaker B: The thing is we're playing against really good teams still. I'm not trying to take away from the teams we're playing.
[00:07:46] Speaker A: No.
[00:07:46] Speaker B: Like, I'm just trying to add more to our team and the record that shows.
[00:07:49] Speaker A: No, I totally agree.
[00:07:50] Speaker B: They're better. They are than what the record shows. They're better than what. What we see in the, in the final score posted on Instagram or Facebook or on our website.
And, and you only really know that if you, if you watch the games. Yeah, right. Of course. Like, there's a lot of frustrating things, things that should be done different. And the guys know this. They meet. They're really. They've. I feel like they've meet. They've met more times this year outside of practice, outside of organized events, as, as just a team than ever before. Like. Yeah. So, man, it's just. It. It really, honestly, it truly highlights the, the level of competitiveness the N double C double A has gotten to in.
[00:08:29] Speaker A: The last three years on the.
It's like you think like, oh, it's not. It's not D3. It's not any. I like, it must be like jumped.
[00:08:36] Speaker B: Up so much like.
[00:08:37] Speaker A: No, man, like, dude, color. Like Grace College, which is NCCA Division 1, was leading Colorado University at halftime in men's basketball.
[00:08:46] Speaker B: There it is.
[00:08:47] Speaker A: Like there is some crazy talent at this level. Like, and you see like, you know, Central, for example, like, like they've. They lost 10 to any team. They've beat a D3 team. Like, they are a really good team and that's why they're the sixth ranked team in the nation. I mean.
[00:09:00] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:09:00] Speaker A: And they played really good against us.
What couple Saturdays go. Or a couple Fridays ago, excuse me, ended up being us 4:1. Jake did come back in that game. He did score the long goal. So that was good for him to, to get that because he missed I think the previous game and then last week against Grace, you know, a tough regional opponent, I think. Did we lose to them in the regionals last year? Was it. Marin was at Great Lakes? I can't remember. But I mean, they. They played good. We ended up losing to them also. 4:1, but shout out to Paul Johnston. PJ first career goal. Good job, PJ. That's. That's super exciting to see that. And I think I just unplugged me again.
[00:09:36] Speaker B: There you go.
Pause that. There we go. We're good.
Matt kicked it, so I don't know.
[00:09:42] Speaker A: What to do with my hands or my feet, apparently, because I keep kicking the.
[00:09:44] Speaker B: Come on, Will. What. What is this? What is this studio you're running?
[00:09:48] Speaker A: But, yeah, so, like, like you said. Totally agree.
Soccer is not playing up to their potential. And hopefully, you know, hopefully that can change. Shift change in the next few weeks with last two regular season games, the conference tournament, and then the regional tournament. So there's still a lot of soccer left for this team to turn around. And if there's a team that can turn it around, it is this group.
[00:10:09] Speaker B: No, I 100% agree. And honestly, really, you. I don't. I don't even know it's the strategy or anything, but what I really know is the. The. The effort and the want, the desire. And you got to ask yourselves, is the desire there for the guys? Right, Right. And the super shallow and very broad thing to say, but.
[00:10:26] Speaker A: But it's true. I mean, you got to want, like I say it all the time on this. On this pod. Sports doesn't show. Character reveals character. And when you're in the lowest of lows on a big losing streak, how are you going to respond? Are you going to just, you know, falter and quit and then like, what. How is that going to be for the rest of the season? For the rest of your life? Or are you going to say, all right, enough is enough? Yeah, it's time to make a change. It's time to play hard. It's time to quit hanging my head. I'm going to go out there and give it my best and see what happens. And that's the. That's the best and most thing that they can do.
[00:10:57] Speaker B: A hot take. And I think a lot of people would disagree with me, and I don't think this is me being biased at all. And. But I would definitely taking away. Taking away some of the drama.
I see this team kind of the scene that the team is super talented and they haven't had success in A regular season.
Some. The first team I think about.
[00:11:17] Speaker A: So you're saying reverse Dallas Cowboys.
[00:11:20] Speaker B: The first. The first team I think about that is very comparable. Was the. Is it 2022 men's basketball team?
[00:11:27] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[00:11:28] Speaker B: Lots of talent. Filled with talent. But, you know, things didn't click in a regular season.
[00:11:33] Speaker A: I was there.
[00:11:34] Speaker B: You were.
[00:11:34] Speaker A: I was there.
[00:11:35] Speaker B: Your coach.
[00:11:35] Speaker A: Well, no, it's crazy.
[00:11:36] Speaker B: Things didn't click in a regular season. And then you get to the tournament play, things clicked and you saw success. Right. And maybe that will happen with the boys. I don't know. I don't know if it will go to the extent of.
[00:11:46] Speaker A: I mean, it was different.
We finished like 10 and I think we only had 10 wins and we had three wins going in the region, in the conference, and we won seven games between conference, regionals and nationals.
[00:11:59] Speaker B: Yeah, so.
[00:11:59] Speaker A: Yeah. So true.
[00:12:00] Speaker B: So I mean, truly, like the regular season, like, it does matter.
[00:12:03] Speaker A: There it is.
There it is.
[00:12:05] Speaker B: It does help a lot. But when it comes to tournament play, just if you got to kick it into gear, it's now. Right.
[00:12:11] Speaker A: And then especially like you said, the talent at our level, like when we go into tournaments time, you know, it's 00. The records are 00. An 0 and 8 team can beat a 8, 0 team. Just because it's like, especially with soccer, where one kick can make the difference.
[00:12:25] Speaker B: And speaking of tournament play, just to continue to transition to this, this, this conversation. Cross country.
Cross country has super regionals.
The biggest thing to talk about is super regionals. In the previous year, super regionals has been more of like a, A fun event for our team who's already qualified. But now for this year, with some injuries as well as some different people missing some meats or just meets being sporadic and having a lot for the guys, like the races. Yeah, the six that don't count.
[00:12:59] Speaker A: Yeah. Right.
[00:12:59] Speaker B: This super regionals is actually super important.
[00:13:02] Speaker A: For our entire team and the men's team. Yes.
[00:13:04] Speaker B: Yeah. So the entire team. The entire men's team has qualified.
[00:13:07] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:13:08] Speaker B: And four have qualified individual or fast.
[00:13:11] Speaker A: The fifth fastest time in the nation.
[00:13:13] Speaker B: Oh, really?
[00:13:14] Speaker A: Yeah. For the men's team. Shout out the men's team.
[00:13:16] Speaker B: Awesome. So four of the men have qualified for nationals individually. The whole men's team just wait on.
[00:13:21] Speaker A: One to one individual to qualify. You got this.
[00:13:25] Speaker B: And then the. The men's team has qualified all together. And then for women, it's just been just.
[00:13:30] Speaker A: Anna.
[00:13:30] Speaker B: Anna. Right now.
[00:13:31] Speaker A: Yeah. So there's this is.
[00:13:32] Speaker B: But the girl. The women's. The women's Cross country team is very close. The qualifying as a team.
[00:13:38] Speaker A: I think we'll see. I think we weren't they last race. I think they were.
I want to say they were like six minutes off from qualifying for nationals as a team, which is very doable, especially being the comb course. So second race of the year. They're racing here. Should be fun. A lot of schools, I think last year there were what, 12 NCAA schools that came in and ran. So should be a lot of fun. Yeah. Exciting. Tomorrow at 4:00 and 5:00 clock here. Here in Dubuque at the soccer complex.
[00:14:06] Speaker B: Gonna be super fun. Last year I rode the Gator. That was awesome.
[00:14:09] Speaker A: You and coach Parker wrote it.
[00:14:10] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:14:11] Speaker A: You're like, come on, come on, run faster.
[00:14:13] Speaker B: No, that was, that was Josh. Josh was in the back, like, just eyeing, like it was funny because, like they. A lot of them, like, I think a lot of them think to stay in pace with the Gator and they get pretty close. Your light power versus Josh eyeing down these runners. You know, I, I think it'd be fun if someone in the back of the Gator would just maybe drinking like a. A soda or munching on some chick fil A. You want some?
[00:14:36] Speaker A: You want.
[00:14:36] Speaker B: Yeah. Okay.
[00:14:37] Speaker A: I don't know. Some people would run faster with. With chick.
[00:14:40] Speaker B: It'd be kind of funny. I. I feel like as a. I feel like a runner. Like someone would have to laugh. You'd have to love that. That'd be fun.
But maybe not. I don't know. I don't know. Cross country humor, maybe. Like, maybe that's not funny in a CR. Country.
[00:14:50] Speaker A: Run faster. I don't know. It's like when the parents in the basketball crowd are like, follow your shot after you shoot it.
[00:14:55] Speaker B: Yeah. The culture for all the sports are different, so I don't know what the, the, the humor, the culture, humor for the cross country, I have no idea. But either it's been a great season for the men's and women's team. I would love to see all the women qualify.
[00:15:10] Speaker A: Say, unexpected, surprising, because. No, we're going the season knowing, like the momentum from last year, but also with some runners that, yeah, were missing, either graduated or, or have the year off because of military service.
But I think it's super great to see how well that the men have run, especially this year.
[00:15:28] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:15:29] Speaker A: And I'm excited to see the ladies run this race and then the next race up at Luther to have that chance to qualify.
[00:15:34] Speaker B: Riley Rath, she's right there. She was what let's go, Riley. Six seconds, eight seconds away from qualifying last time. She's got this one. She. I'm calling. I'm calling her right now. Riley Raf is going to qualify individually for the women's cross country nationals.
[00:15:46] Speaker A: So Shane's going to interview her right after she qualifies.
[00:15:49] Speaker B: That'd be fun. That'd be cool.
[00:15:50] Speaker A: Let's do it.
[00:15:50] Speaker B: That'd be great. She's made a. She's like, stepped up so much this year.
[00:15:53] Speaker A: It's been really cool.
[00:15:54] Speaker B: It's been so cool.
But we're still dealing with some injuries, so we'll see everything.
[00:15:59] Speaker A: Yeah. Hopefully after this happens. Because they've had three weeks off.
[00:16:01] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:16:02] Speaker A: From the last race, so that should be hopefully some good rest, recovery and then fresh legs to go at it tomorrow.
[00:16:08] Speaker B: Hey, I mean, yeah, I mean, the men's team got set. They were runner up last year in the national nation. In the nation for cross country. We'll see what the men's team.
[00:16:17] Speaker A: In the first year, we had a full team, too. How great is that?
[00:16:21] Speaker B: I know. And on it. I don't know. I don't know how, how, how, how much progress our regional opponents have. Have taken, but I would love to see us take away a home w.
[00:16:35] Speaker A: I think of the four teams in front of us, I think two of.
[00:16:38] Speaker B: Them will be there because. Crown.
[00:16:39] Speaker A: Crown.
[00:16:40] Speaker B: Crown. One last year, Moody Crown won last year and we were only a few seconds away from beating them.
[00:16:46] Speaker A: Well, we would have won.
[00:16:47] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:16:48] Speaker A: If one of the other schools had had all five runners. If one of their runners hadn't got a concussion the night before and would have run because of how, like the. It's, it's still so confusing me, but with how the, the placements go with schools that have five runners and those that don't. We would have come out on top if that school had had all five runners.
[00:17:07] Speaker B: Because you. Yeah, because if you don't qualify for regionals, it's different for n. Regionals and nationals will be different. But for nationals, we. We'll talk about nationals when we get there. But for regionals, you will qualify individually when you finish, but then your time will then go to your team time and your team time where you place. Yeah. Your team time will then be added together and compared to everybody else, and then that will be what determines who wins individually and who wins team time. And they only have, I think, a first place award. They don't have a second place.
[00:17:44] Speaker A: No, there's no, there's no banner for second place.
[00:17:47] Speaker B: If you're Second, you're last in cross country. Yep. Unless they change it this year. But last year, that's what happened.
[00:17:51] Speaker A: Yep. That's why we didn't get a banner for nationals because we didn't win. We just. We just were runners up.
[00:17:56] Speaker B: We got.
[00:17:57] Speaker A: Literally, we got a plaque. We got a plaque, but not a banner.
[00:17:59] Speaker B: Yes, Whatever. But looking forward to what cross country can do. This. This race. And then they got another meet before region, before nationals.
[00:18:08] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:18:09] Speaker B: So which I don't know why they have a meat.
[00:18:12] Speaker A: I think it was a late ad.
[00:18:13] Speaker B: I want to say it has to be, but, I mean, there is some. A little bit of gap, so it keeps it a little warm. So. But man, if we're talking about wanting it, if we're talking about being hungry, great transition feasting and. And actually getting. Getting hot at the right time of the season.
[00:18:33] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[00:18:33] Speaker B: We're talking about our women's volleyball team.
[00:18:36] Speaker A: Shane. Women's volleyball team.
[00:18:37] Speaker B: Down goes number four.
[00:18:39] Speaker A: Boom. Number four. Down with our Emmaus women's team defeated number four ranked Calvary University. Three epic. Three, two set.
[00:18:49] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:18:49] Speaker A: Match. Which is cool because we played them earlier in the year and we lost two to three sets and we came back and played amazing. And it was really cool to see them. Yeah. Talking about the hot streak. I mean, since our last episode. 40 for the women's volleyball team. Crazy 30 victory against Central.
30 victory against Maranatha. 32 victory against number four Calvary, and then 31 victory over Grace University for us to go undefeated in the region.
[00:19:16] Speaker B: Grace. Grace was the. Grace was a school that beat us in regional championships to take away the national qualifier away from our. Our women's team. And it hurt, man. I remember I was driving back from the ark encounter and we were all. We, like, pulled over, got some food, and we were just all just so sad.
[00:19:38] Speaker A: I forgot who was what. Someone was watching it while running the score table for our basketball game. I was giving updates, like, every five.
[00:19:44] Speaker B: Minutes in the mic.
[00:19:45] Speaker A: Yeah. No, no, no. But just like leaning across the table.
[00:19:48] Speaker B: Saying, coach D, Remember a couple years at the Iowa Youth Rally.
[00:19:52] Speaker A: No, because I was on the camera.
[00:19:53] Speaker B: Oh, no. Yeah. Yeah, that's right. A couple years ago.
[00:19:54] Speaker A: It was that year.
[00:19:55] Speaker B: Yeah. A couple years ago. Iowa Youth Rally. Like, the. The preacher, like, stopped. He's like, how's Emmaus doing? Okay.
It's kind of.
[00:20:01] Speaker A: That's crazy. That is.
[00:20:02] Speaker B: And then everyone started freaking out because someone came running in. Like, we made it to nationals. Yeah.
[00:20:07] Speaker A: But yeah. Shout out to women's volleyball team. They have been on a streak.
Some highlights that that Central game, Lindsay led the team with 10 kills. The Maranatha game, Kate led the team with 13 kills. The Calvary game, Sala Big Dog, 17 kills. Love that game.
[00:20:22] Speaker B: Big dog.
[00:20:23] Speaker A: And then against Grace, Kate had a heyday, went off for 15 kills.
Played really good enough that especially on the defensive side that Jennica beach won n double C double A defensive player of the week for volleyball. So shout out Jen.
[00:20:36] Speaker B: There we go.
[00:20:36] Speaker A: That award.
[00:20:38] Speaker B: I just put that going for that one.
[00:20:39] Speaker A: You love that one. But that, Shane, is not the only accomplishment for Jenica Beach.
Jenica beach, after Saturday's game against Grace became the number one all time digs leader in Emmaus women's volleyball history.
[00:20:56] Speaker B: Shout out Jennica beach with a year to spare.
[00:21:00] Speaker A: With a year to spare. So she's only going to crush that record. But speaking of that, one thing that we want to do is we want to talk about our listener of the month.
[00:21:11] Speaker B: Do we want to do that or.
[00:21:12] Speaker A: At the end we want to do this right now?
[00:21:13] Speaker B: I want to do it at the end.
[00:21:14] Speaker A: Our listener of the month. Because this applies to her.
[00:21:16] Speaker B: Sure.
[00:21:17] Speaker A: Our listener of the month, Shane.
[00:21:18] Speaker B: Our listener of the month.
We, we've been. So some students have come coming up to us telling us about the people who listen to this podcast. And again, we are so thankful for you guys and everything you have done, taking time out of your to make us a part of it. So we're super thankful. But this person has, this student has came up to us multiple times, has told us about this listener and we are just pleased to announce love her.
And you know she loves you. She always gives you hugs. But Grammy, Grammy Carla. Grammy Carla.
[00:21:50] Speaker A: So shout out to grandma Carla.
[00:21:52] Speaker B: She's the listener of the month.
[00:21:53] Speaker A: Give her the month. Yes. And also shout out to grandma Carla who now has two granddaughters on our mayest women's volleyball team that are now number one all time in their categories. With Caitlin Rand being number one. It kills all time. And Jenica beach being number one in digs all time.
[00:22:10] Speaker B: We should get like a like a T shirt or something. It's like listener like in the nest, like exclusive shirt. Send it to like the listeners a month. We'll figure that out.
[00:22:17] Speaker A: That'd be great.
We owe you something, Grammy Carl. Yeah.
[00:22:20] Speaker B: Shout out to you Grammy Carla. And thanks for always saying hi to Matt.
[00:22:26] Speaker A: Thanks. But yeah, on that note, Shane, again with that, with that great weekend or week for our women's volleyball team.
[00:22:34] Speaker B: Man, they've been killing it the Coaches.
[00:22:36] Speaker A: Poll came out on. What's today? Today's Thursday, so it came out on Monday.
[00:22:41] Speaker B: What number Tuesday.
[00:22:43] Speaker A: And our women's volleyball team is ranked number six in the nation. Number six, which is the highest ranking for them since the 2019 nationals year.
[00:22:53] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:22:54] Speaker A: So they are like you said, now they're running on all cylinders right now. So if they can finish out the regular season these next two games.
Not 2019, 2018, 2019 or 20. 2017-2018-2018-2019, 2018.
[00:23:12] Speaker B: Either way, it was 2017.
[00:23:13] Speaker A: Because they went both years. Yeah, because that was my senior year. It was 2017.
[00:23:17] Speaker B: 2018 was. You're seeing here and then we'll talk about this later.
[00:23:19] Speaker A: No, no, it's 2017. 2018.
[00:23:20] Speaker B: We'll be. Well, someone will be wrong, but yes.
[00:23:22] Speaker A: Anyway, huge accomplishment.
[00:23:23] Speaker B: Volleyball doesn't go over the years, so it's either one school year, whatever. Anyway, okay, fact check.
[00:23:29] Speaker A: Kevin's gonna fact check me later, so it's fine.
[00:23:31] Speaker B: Yeah, either way.
[00:23:32] Speaker A: But yes. Shout out to the ones wallet team.
[00:23:35] Speaker B: What do you think it has to do with a lot of their success, Matt?
[00:23:38] Speaker A: I mean, a lot of it come. Does come down to the mentality. I mean, we talked about earlier in the podcast, like what earlier? Two podcasts ago that, you know, they went. They were in a. They were kind of in a similar boat to soccer where they were in a big struggle mentally wise. I mean, all of they were giving up too many unforced point, like unforced errors off of like they were giving up too many points to the other team off unforced errors. And I think they've really cleaned that up a little bit. They've really. I mean, obviously the lineup change has been.
Has helped a fair amount. Like we're putting people in the right positions. I mean, we're getting good looks too. Like, Michelle's been doing a really good job setting lately and our hitters are taking full advantage of that. Like, Alice Green has been playing really well. Like, she's going it. Which is gonna be fun to see her go against her sister next week. Oh, yeah, it should be a lot of fun. But yeah, like, she's been playing well. Lindsay's been playing really well. She's finally healthy. Thank you, Lord. And then Salem, Caitlyn are just, you know, the two consistent dogs out there that are tearing it up. So.
[00:24:36] Speaker B: Yeah, I definitely agree. The mentality, the women's team actually, like, I mean, just being an athlete, like it's, it's easy to get into your head and to lose momentum. And that's not even just within a game, just within a season, like keeping a momentum throughout an entire season, having that mentality, especially being a college student. Yeah, really tough. Like, I mean all, all these, all these student athletes are dealing with stuff.
[00:24:58] Speaker A: Off the court, especially like Jen Salah and, and Caitlin. You know, they're all in the education program, so they're all like working on field studies and lesson plans like during the volleyball season. So that takes a toll.
[00:25:12] Speaker B: Yeah. But then also just all the other stuff that, you know, we don't hear about.
[00:25:15] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:25:16] Speaker B: That is just going on in their life and that goes beyond all that, goes beyond a mess that's everywhere. Right. So it's just, it's really tough to be a collegiate athlete because it's not your full time job.
[00:25:25] Speaker A: Right.
[00:25:25] Speaker B: And especially at a Christian school. It's not your, especially at our main responsibility.
[00:25:29] Speaker A: I mean, you are a student athlete.
[00:25:30] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:25:30] Speaker A: You're not an athlete, athlete, athlete.
[00:25:32] Speaker B: I mean, you would say you're a student first and then an athlete, but here you're, you're a follower of Jesus.
[00:25:36] Speaker A: First and then a student and then an athlete.
[00:25:38] Speaker B: Right. And we take that serious, you know, and you see that in the core, the core elements of the volleyball team, of all the other teams, but sticking to volleyball, you know, our coaches do a great job of really trying to pour into these, these young women's lives and seeing them grow and, and being molded after Christ. And it's really cool, it's really cool to see this team, this team really come around this year and you know, flip the, flip the switch, you know, change the gear towards the end of the season. And man, they so deserve nationals and I would love to see them finish out the season and that'd be awesome. I mean, it's, it's. We can't speak too much into it. Obviously you don't want to go to anybody's head, but just continue like listeners, just continue to do what you're doing, like continue to be praying and, and reaching out to these, these young women and going to the games and supporting them because they only got a few left. Yeah, they need the support, they need the love, you know, and yeah, this team, I, I just love the adversity they've had and how they've been able to come around that as a team and taking games serious. Every game matters.
[00:26:45] Speaker A: It doesn't matter who the opponent is, doesn't matter if it's conference, regionals, whatever it is, taking that opponent, that game seriously and good things have happened.
[00:26:53] Speaker B: Yeah, I Mean, like when we. When we beat Grace, you know, that game doesn't. I mean, it matters with standings, but that game specifically in the regular season, what does Mental win. It doesn't matter if you go to nationals or not.
[00:27:06] Speaker A: Right.
[00:27:06] Speaker B: It doesn't matter if you go to regional regionals or not. Right. But how you play that game is going to impact your future games. It's going to impact how you think about things. It's going to honestly sharpen you, make you a better player, or see. See the. See the mistakes you made. Right. So if you're not trying, you're not going to be able to be sharpened because you're not going to be able to correct mistakes that you made.
[00:27:31] Speaker A: Exactly.
[00:27:32] Speaker B: You're not going to be able to see something you did well, you know, feel really good and continue to go that momentum or encourage a player. So every game matters, no matter. No matter where that game gets you.
[00:27:42] Speaker A: Yeah, exactly.
[00:27:43] Speaker B: The perspective. And I really feel like this women's volleyball team's perspective has. Has changed.
[00:27:49] Speaker A: Really cool to see.
[00:27:50] Speaker B: And they love it.
[00:27:51] Speaker A: They've been playing like that's been changed. So shout out to the. To the. To the women's volleyball team, for sure. That have made that adjustment. Made that change.
[00:27:58] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:27:58] Speaker A: Would you say flip the switch or change the gear?
[00:28:00] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:28:01] Speaker A: And are now, you know, on a roll right now. And it'd be really cool to see them continue to do that.
[00:28:06] Speaker B: It would be. So we'll have a. We got a couple more games coming up before the end of the fall season, but before we get there, we got a fast break.
[00:28:13] Speaker A: Fast break time.
[00:28:14] Speaker B: Everyone's favorite time. Fast break. Fast break. Will.
[00:28:17] Speaker A: Fast break.
[00:28:19] Speaker B: Okay, so we are. Podcast is going long, but. Podcast today is going long, but.
So we'll be done. We'll be wrapping it up here with a few minutes, but we. We had a lot to cover, you know.
[00:28:31] Speaker A: Okay, so what is it?
[00:28:32] Speaker B: I saw this. Maybe he can make a. I don't know if he can make a graphic about this maybe. But I saw this on a reel the other day. I'm like, I'm gonna imitate it. Okay. I'm gonna have you make, you know, create your favorite or your ideal burger meal.
[00:28:47] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:28:47] Speaker B: All right. So this will be like fast food. This will be like fast food.
[00:28:51] Speaker A: I was thinking.
[00:28:51] Speaker B: So, like, we're talking about your entree, right?
[00:28:53] Speaker A: Okay. Okay.
[00:28:54] Speaker B: I'm going to give you some categories, and you're going to pick which one you want.
[00:28:56] Speaker A: Okay. So I'm deciding for myself or I'm just for you.
[00:28:59] Speaker B: This is Matt Tomlinson.
[00:29:01] Speaker A: You're giving me things to choose from or like you're saying McDonald's patty, a Culver's Patty, or Freddy's Patty?
[00:29:07] Speaker B: No, not like that. There's like just a straight up burger.
[00:29:09] Speaker A: All right, ready?
[00:29:09] Speaker B: This is for people to judge you based off of your selections. Okay? So Matt can't have cheese, everybody. So keep that in mind. Okay. Allergy. So your entree.
[00:29:19] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:29:20] Speaker B: Okay. Ideal fast food burger meal. Okay. Your entree.
Steak and Shake. You got a Steak and Shake burger. Any burger you want. You can have the seven Stack. That's a crazy one time on a.
[00:29:30] Speaker A: Road trip we went, we stopped at Steak and Shake with the men's and the women's basketball team. And there were like three people that ordered the seven on seven. And the. The.
It was late at night, so there weren't that many kitchen staff. And the. The waiter was like, I'm so sorry, but we're not doing that because it's going to take up too much time on the grill, so you're gonna have to pick something else.
[00:29:48] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:29:49] Speaker A: And then we had a depressed team.
[00:29:50] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, they. I remember you guys. That basketball team would always order that.
[00:29:54] Speaker A: Okay, so Steak and Shake.
[00:29:55] Speaker B: Steak and shake. Seven stack. You got McDonald's burger. A Quarter Pounder. All right, five guys. Burger, Burger King Whopper. So I guess McDonald's.
[00:30:05] Speaker A: I don't know, man.
[00:30:06] Speaker B: We'll do a McDonald's Big Mac. Okay.
[00:30:09] Speaker A: If we did five guys, I'd take up the donation. We just got pretty much.
[00:30:14] Speaker B: Okay, so Burger King Whopper.
[00:30:15] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:30:16] Speaker B: The Culver's Butter burger and the Freddy. The Freddy Smash burger and the Wendy's Baconator.
[00:30:20] Speaker A: Okay.
The Freddy's Smashburger, man.
[00:30:23] Speaker B: Really?
[00:30:24] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:30:24] Speaker B: I don't know the hype behind Freddy's, man.
[00:30:26] Speaker A: I mean, that's our go to family spot.
[00:30:29] Speaker B: Everyone loves Freddy.
[00:30:30] Speaker A: So good.
[00:30:30] Speaker B: Okay, Freddy Smashburger. I do like a Smash burger. I haven't had a burger in a while, so.
[00:30:35] Speaker A: So you know who makes good Smash Burgers? Assistant coach Dylan Anderson.
[00:30:39] Speaker B: Dylan, come on, man.
[00:30:40] Speaker A: Shout out hot dogs. Deadeye.
[00:30:42] Speaker B: Now your. Your ideal fry. Okay? We're talking about Chick Fil A's waffle.
[00:30:46] Speaker A: Honestly, this is more important.
[00:30:47] Speaker B: Chick fil A's waffle. McDonald's straight cut.
[00:30:50] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:30:51] Speaker B: Arby's, Curly, Wendy's potato cut.
Freddy's Shoestrings.
Five guys thick.
[00:30:59] Speaker A: Okay, this is going to be Hot Topic Take but.
[00:31:03] Speaker B: Or other.
[00:31:03] Speaker A: You can. I mean, not other, dude.
[00:31:06] Speaker B: I mean, if there's one wrong answer, it is.
[00:31:08] Speaker A: I mean, I Do love the Freddy's short fries, but I would have to. I would pick the. The Arby's curly fries.
[00:31:15] Speaker B: Wow, that's crazy.
[00:31:16] Speaker A: That's a good.
[00:31:16] Speaker B: You Arby's haters out there are vomiting.
[00:31:19] Speaker A: Right now, including my wife Rachel.
[00:31:21] Speaker B: I'm surprised you didn't do Chick Fil A. Actually, everyone loves Chick Fil A waffle.
[00:31:24] Speaker A: I do love the Chick Fil A, but also had Arby's on our Colorado trip, and the boys had the Arby's curly fries for the first time, and they loved them.
[00:31:31] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:31:32] Speaker A: I do love them too.
[00:31:33] Speaker B: Okay, all right, all right. Now you get your drink.
[00:31:35] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:31:35] Speaker B: All right. Your drink. You get a smaller list, but more of, like, iconic stuff. All right, you get the Chick fil A. Sunjoy, McDonald's Sprite, Culver's Root Beer, or just Coke.
[00:31:49] Speaker A: Diet Coke, please.
[00:31:50] Speaker B: Diet Coke, straight up. Diet Coke.
[00:31:52] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:31:52] Speaker B: All right, man. Man, you're. You're. You're having a good day right now. All right? Here's your dessert. All right.
And this is the last one I have.
[00:32:01] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:32:01] Speaker B: Okay.
This is funny, actually, now that I'm looking at them.
[00:32:06] Speaker A: Oh, no. Because I probably can't eat any of them.
[00:32:08] Speaker B: Ready? Here's your desserts.
Wendy's Frosty. All right. A McDonald's McFlurry. A Five Guys Shake.
[00:32:17] Speaker A: I've not been to five guys in, like, Culver's.
[00:32:19] Speaker B: Culvert's custard. Freddy's ice cream. Do they call it custard?
[00:32:23] Speaker A: Yeah, I think they. I don't know.
[00:32:25] Speaker B: I feel like they do Freddy's custard.
[00:32:27] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:32:28] Speaker B: Or an. Or an apple.
[00:32:30] Speaker A: An apple. I'm gonna pick another.
[00:32:33] Speaker B: An apple. What the heck?
[00:32:34] Speaker A: Okay, I'm gonna. The apple then.
[00:32:35] Speaker B: Wait, what else? What other desserts?
[00:32:37] Speaker A: The one dessert I can't eat is the dairy Free Dilly bar at Dairy Queen.
[00:32:41] Speaker B: That's a good one.
[00:32:42] Speaker A: It's a good one.
[00:32:42] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:32:43] Speaker A: The one dessert I can't have at cold.
[00:32:44] Speaker B: I forgot about the dilly.
[00:32:45] Speaker A: TMI for everyone. But it's the lemonade. Strawberry smoothie.
[00:32:49] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:32:49] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:32:49] Speaker B: That's not really dessert, though. I mean, but it's strawberry smoothie. It kind of is. Yeah. Strawberry smoothie. It is a desert.
[00:32:55] Speaker A: All right. That's a good meal.
[00:32:56] Speaker B: I like that. There it is. I like that. Sweet. Yeah, I saw it. Saw it on YouTube and I was like, okay, I'll try this out for Matt. Let everyone see your. Your favorite meals.
[00:33:04] Speaker A: This has been Fast Break.
[00:33:05] Speaker B: Dude. I'm happy you didn't do, like, the Shoestring stuff.
[00:33:08] Speaker A: I do like those people like them. I don't know.
[00:33:10] Speaker B: It's because I haven't had these.
[00:33:11] Speaker A: Has really good sauce and they also have really good like. Like a dry. Like a. Like a shake the Freddy sauce or whatever.
[00:33:17] Speaker B: Everyone has been talking about Freddy's a lot lately, so I don't know, I've like been there once but Chili yesterday was pretty good.
[00:33:23] Speaker A: Anyway, up next, Shane. We have a few games left for the regular season. Soccer plays Maranatha at 3pm today up at Maranatha, another big regional game. And then they go down to number six ranked CCCB on Saturday they play at 3:30.
So that'd be a big game. And then our ladies will play. They go down to Hannibal Lagrange actually on Friday. Hannibal Lagrange.
I don't remember the time of that game. I think it's 6:30.
[00:33:55] Speaker B: They're D1. Yeah.
[00:33:57] Speaker A: In CCA. Yeah, I think so. I think they're in AI too.
[00:34:01] Speaker B: Makes sense.
[00:34:02] Speaker A: And then they're at CCCB on Saturday at 1pm and then Monday coming to town is Judson University.
[00:34:09] Speaker B: Judson.
[00:34:10] Speaker A: The battle of the Green sisters. Alice Green for Emmaus and Maisie Green for Judson. So it should be fun.
[00:34:16] Speaker B: Get Maisie over. Come on.
[00:34:18] Speaker A: So that should be fun. And then Next Tuesday at 7pm Emmaus Men's Basketball goes over to Clark University for an exhibition game. So we're going right?
[00:34:29] Speaker B: Basketball season starting.
[00:34:31] Speaker A: Right.
[00:34:31] Speaker B: Hey, they just had a scrimmage the other day. It was good.
[00:34:34] Speaker A: It was good. It was fun.
[00:34:35] Speaker B: It was fun.
[00:34:35] Speaker A: I'm excited for. I'm excited for Tuesday to go play NAIA Clark in town. So.
[00:34:40] Speaker B: Yeah, it was awesome. I'm excited for the men's basketball team and the women's team this year.
[00:34:45] Speaker A: Thanks for being there. That was awesome.
[00:34:46] Speaker B: Of course.
[00:34:46] Speaker A: Here.
[00:34:47] Speaker B: Yeah. Dude, I like last year I couldn't make it to any games.
I was actually doing my job, traveling.
Okay.
[00:34:53] Speaker A: Had my other hat on. My coaching hat on.
[00:34:55] Speaker B: Yeah, you did. You have your coaching hat on but.
Sweet. Yeah. If you are in the area, come by to watch the games. Especially the super. The super regional regional race tomorrow. Friday, October 24th.
[00:35:11] Speaker A: Yeah, sure.
[00:35:12] Speaker B: October. The days are on the other 24th.
[00:35:14] Speaker A: October 24th, women race at five.
