[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign and welcome to in the Nest, your front row seat to Emmaus athletics. I am your co host, Matthew Tomlinson, joined by Shane Douglas, our other co host. [00:00:16] Speaker B: Hello, Shane. [00:00:17] Speaker A: How we doing on this beautiful day? [00:00:19] Speaker B: Doing well. [00:00:20] Speaker A: Beautiful fall day. [00:00:21] Speaker B: Yeah. I'm tired, man. I don't know why, but I'm tired. I was telling you that a little bit before today. We've just been, you know, pedal to the metal in enrollment, just really working. [00:00:29] Speaker A: Really have we had a. [00:00:31] Speaker B: We had some good meetings yesterday. We've been busy all October. If it was travel or some stuff with family or tons of visits, which we've talked about in previous episodes, but it's been insane. It's been busy in enrollment and we're happy about that because that's, that's good, man. We're, we're, we're ahead of last year's and last year was a record breaking year, so. So we're excited, man, but yeah, keep praying, but just tired. Sports season, fall season almost over with for Shane. You got football going on? Yeah, I don't know, man. I'm just, I'm just chilling. Nothing crazy going on. I'm really looking forward to like the holidays. Like we were talking about this in our office the other day is I, I feel like when once when you mature, you get to a mature age, you're like, why, why wait to celebrate Christmas? [00:01:26] Speaker A: Why that November 1st is gonna be here before we know it. When did you hear that? You hear that? [00:01:31] Speaker B: Yeah. Dude, I've been always against. This is the thing. Like, I am, I'm not like too stubborn, right? I came to like, I've always been against early Christmas. Like after Thanksgiving we celebrate and then we have the month. Right? But I'm like, you know, I love Christmas so much and I love the, I love the season. I love the message of the gospel. Like, why don't we just celebr. Celebrate this like now? Like, can we skip Halloween? Like Thanksgiving will just be like a little like break in between, right? And in the same note, in the same, same logic, like, like in the same logic of me understanding like Christmas is just superior and better. And I came around to like, let's expand it, let's explain it. Same, same logic applies to like Chipotle and Panteros. Oh yeah. I used to be a Panteros fan growing up in Iowa and Des Moines. Come to Dubuque. And now I'm like, chipotle is so much better, but that's me. [00:02:23] Speaker A: That's interesting. That is an interesting one there, Shane. [00:02:26] Speaker B: How Are you, man? How are you doing? [00:02:27] Speaker A: Good. I'm a. I'm. I'm a little jazzed up from our exhibition game on Tuesday. It was. It was a great night. Yeah. [00:02:34] Speaker B: Basketball starting, but. [00:02:35] Speaker A: Yeah. No, I'm excited that, you know, fall is officially here. The weather's here. I know. What. One thing that is going to cheer you up here in a little bit is when the coffee bean gets pumping Spice latte back. [00:02:46] Speaker B: It has. [00:02:46] Speaker A: Has it back? [00:02:47] Speaker B: It's been back for, like, forever. [00:02:50] Speaker A: Forever. [00:02:51] Speaker B: Like, they added it in August. What are you talking about? [00:02:53] Speaker A: But it's late to the game season. I mean, you're late. Why would you drink it when it's hot out? [00:02:57] Speaker B: You're late to the. I would drink a. Sorry, I do not drink Pumpkin spice. White chai chai. Pumpkin spice. What do you. You all. [00:03:05] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:03:05] Speaker B: You just drink black coffee. [00:03:06] Speaker A: Yes. [00:03:07] Speaker B: But guess what? I don't need coffee. I don't need it. [00:03:10] Speaker A: You don't need it? No, I don't. Actually. I'm on. We're on a coffee break right now. [00:03:14] Speaker B: Oh, that's why you're so grumpy. [00:03:16] Speaker A: I'm not grumpy. Who says I'm grumpy? [00:03:17] Speaker B: I'm joking. We're fighting. [00:03:20] Speaker A: Jane's grumpy. Matthews. [00:03:22] Speaker B: I'm chilling. I'm just. [00:03:23] Speaker A: Will is definitely. No, I'm just kidding. But no, it's been. It's been a good semester. It's crazy that. I mean, we're coming down to the wire. Like, we have what's almost six weeks left in the school year or school semester for this year. [00:03:37] Speaker B: Just. Just one letter. [00:03:38] Speaker A: I didn't say. I didn't say the other number. [00:03:40] Speaker B: Will. [00:03:40] Speaker A: Come on, brother. Come on. But, yeah, like, we're coming on the wire of the semester. Like, you know, the regular season for basketball kicks off next week. We got conference for soccer, volleyball this week. We have regionals in two weeks. Like, man, it's gone by quick. [00:03:55] Speaker B: But it is. It is conference this weekend. But, you know, as it comes to a close, we've had a. We had a. We already had a regional tournament. [00:04:06] Speaker A: Yep. [00:04:06] Speaker B: For one of our teams. [00:04:08] Speaker A: We already have. [00:04:09] Speaker B: And they performed very, very well. And that was our cross country team. [00:04:12] Speaker A: We have to apologize. We have to make it a public apology. Last episode, we said that we would interview Riley. Wrath. We guaranteed that she would qualify for Nationals. [00:04:22] Speaker B: That. We said we interview her. [00:04:23] Speaker A: We both did. We said we would interview her right after she qualified for Nationals. But we didn't do it. [00:04:28] Speaker B: Don't remember this, but roll the Clip. [00:04:32] Speaker A: Cat is out the bag right now. [00:04:34] Speaker B: I did not say that. [00:04:34] Speaker A: Congratulations. [00:04:36] Speaker B: She's got this one. She. I'm calling. I'm calling her right now. Rally Rapha is going to qualify individually for the women's cross country nationals. [00:04:43] Speaker A: So Shane's going to interview her right after she qualifies. [00:04:45] Speaker B: That'd be fun. That'd be cool. [00:04:47] Speaker A: Do it. [00:04:47] Speaker B: That'd be fun. That'd be cool. [00:04:48] Speaker A: Do it. Riley Wrath. As well as Lily holton, who both PR'd and qualified for nationals. Let's go. [00:05:00] Speaker B: I said Riley would qualify. I never said we would film her. So roll that clip claim like, if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. [00:05:06] Speaker A: You are wrong. [00:05:07] Speaker B: I don't think I said it. I don't think I said a great. [00:05:10] Speaker A: Super regionals for that. We were able to host again a shout out to the basketball team that helped out, you know, setting it up and managing the course. But Gerardi, he tweaked it a little bit this year from last year, but it was good. And you know, it's the. The sub region, the super region, whatever you would call it. Really enjoys the course. So excited. [00:05:33] Speaker B: Yeah. The rules behind you. The rules behind cross country are weird. [00:05:35] Speaker A: It kind of. [00:05:36] Speaker B: Yeah, they. There's like just like in soccer where the field. They're not. All the fields are the same lengthwise width. Cross country is the same. When it's like you're running. An 8K is typically never like in exactly. It can be an 8ish K and that could be a little below or more so there's like a range from what I know you're right. And I'm sure Gerardi. Coach Girardi, very specific. I don't know. I'm sure his is like always on the dot. [00:06:08] Speaker A: I bet it is. [00:06:09] Speaker B: But just, you know, riding the Gator. [00:06:11] Speaker A: I got a lot of people chasing. [00:06:13] Speaker B: I gotta ride the game. Yeah, a lot of people are chasing. I don't know what I did. I didn't steal anything. But so many people were running after me as well as coach Parker, as well as we were in the Gator and Josh, so. But it was fun. The cross country meet was awesome. It was great. Yeah. But shout out to shout out to our runners, but specifically Riley and Lily for qualifying. Amazing job. [00:06:36] Speaker A: So three ladies qualified for nationals. [00:06:38] Speaker B: I said this, I said this after they competed is that we've been all. We've been hyping Riley up all year. She. She deserves it. She's been killing it this season. But what like Lily Holton, you know, qualify we have not talked about enough. So shout out to Lil. Give her a little eagle. Give her. There you go. So shout out to Lily for qualifying. Sneaking right in there underneath the qualifying number. And we got. We got. We got people going. We got pretty much our whole teams going. So we're really excited and happy about that. But one of the highlights for me was being in a gator. I lost my phone. Actually, not. Not important. I lost my phone. But everybody on the track kept screaming, phone, phone, phone. Shout out to Landon and Lauren Jacobus for finding that I was. I asked the basketball guys, too, if they could go look in the woods, and they just sat on their. In their chairs. [00:07:29] Speaker A: You called me and said, hey, call my phone. [00:07:30] Speaker B: Yeah, you helped me. Coach Parker helped me. Josh helped me. All the other basketball guys, they were. [00:07:35] Speaker A: Busy helping me, man. [00:07:36] Speaker B: They're on my hit list right now. Like, no, they weren't helping. They were sitting there chatting, doing nothing. Because you only need one person to point, and you had, like, 10 guys there. Nobody wanted to go look at my phone. Can't believe you guys. And you know who you are. Like, I'm. I'm heated now. [00:07:50] Speaker A: You are grumpy. [00:07:51] Speaker B: I am now. [00:07:51] Speaker A: Better go get a pumpkin. [00:07:52] Speaker B: I'm remembering this. I don't want it. I don't want a pumpkin spice latte. They deserve to buy me. They need to buy me one if they want to be back in my. Good gracious. But what's crazy, I just love meets where everyone's running around, going to each spot, cheering on their teammates. But then the finish line is the craziest part of the race. Just to see people really push, push themselves the last couple feet and then see the celebration in the end. Sometimes you're like, man, you guys, like, you see someone, like, run across and they're so defeated they fall. Some people passed out. And it was a little word about that. Yeah, it was a little chill. It was crazy. Like, someone will pass out. This guy get dragged. It's crazy, man. You got people, like, barfing. It's like, it's. I don't know, like, what's going on, man? Like, these people are pushing themselves, but it's so cool to see someone finish and just, like, just scream like, there's a Maranatha runner. He was the first. He wasn't the first one, but he. When he finished, he probably finished, like, top 20, you know, maybe. But he. Honestly, Honestly, man, not like, maybe top 25. I don't know. But, like, he was the. He was the most happy like he didn't come in first. You know, he wasn't last. [00:09:01] Speaker A: Finished the race. [00:09:02] Speaker B: Finished it. He was so excited. He was like, let's go. [00:09:06] Speaker A: Ah. [00:09:06] Speaker B: Then just collapsed and fell and like was like so happy. Went to go hug everybody. Not just his teammates, but everybody. It's just super cool. It's super cool to see those, those runners finish. And same with the women. You had Isaac Sauer on the Emmaus Eagles team. He let out like a huge roar when he finished. So really cool to see that pr. [00:09:27] Speaker A: He PR that day too. [00:09:28] Speaker B: That's true. But also Daniel racing well too. So. Yeah, man, it was. It's just fun in the fitness. [00:09:38] Speaker A: Shout out to the Bean. To Nathan bean. Yeah. Who PR'd for the. And finished first on the team. He did for the Eagles. And it was cool like seeing like that, like he was in a pack. There's like. I think when he finished there was like four or five other runners that finished within a second. So there was a group that he was running down. [00:09:55] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. He was able to pass a couple guys on the last stretch. Early on, all the Emmaus guys were clumped together, which is really cool to see how they, they run together within at least the first lap because they run. They ran the course three times through the woods once. The women didn't run through the woods, but they were clumped together within the first lap and then broke off. Christian, Christian was. He probably ran one of his fastest first laps, but he knew he was, he was pushing it. He knew he ran that first lap really quick, the first mile, the first lap really quick. And I think that's what really had him drag a little bit back because he used up a lot of his energy early on, which he was talking to us towards the end, but yeah, yeah, so. But pretty fun, especially on that finish line. I'm telling you guys. You guys got to run to that finish line and just watch everybody's reactions. It's crazy. There's so much going on. [00:10:50] Speaker A: First race of the year when there were so many runners just like everyone's just like, yeah, like it's. [00:10:54] Speaker B: I'm sure. Yeah. Like now it's just like, I did it, you know, and you know, Crown. Crown did a great job. They had a great team. They swept, I think both men and women this year. [00:11:05] Speaker A: Our guys finished third time or placement. [00:11:08] Speaker B: Wise, which I'm, I think is a. That's, that's an awesome job for our men's team. Losing our top three runners last year going into this season. Not sure what's going on? Yeah. Christian and Caleb both stepping up this year as. As leaders, as veterans of the team and leading a lot of first year runners to national qualifying, you know, so good job, guys. Yeah. Good job to the team. There. There's that eagle. It does. It's not. It doesn't feel right without shouting out someone. And we don't. They don't get the eagle, so. But yeah, it was pretty fun. Cross country races are fun. I don't care what people say. Of course I was riding in a gator. That's always fun. But. [00:11:47] Speaker A: Because last year you wanted to, but you didn't end up doing it, right? [00:11:50] Speaker B: No, no. Last year I did. [00:11:51] Speaker A: You did it last year. [00:11:52] Speaker B: We had the same crew this year, remember? If it was because I'm so that. That's the thing. Is Coach Parker's Dora. I am Map. And then Josh's boots. You know, boots is kind of useless. He just sits in the back. But Dora's driving. She's driving the ship. Map is letting her know where to go. That's us. That was us. [00:12:11] Speaker A: But backpack. [00:12:14] Speaker B: The, the gator. [00:12:15] Speaker A: Gator's backpack. [00:12:16] Speaker B: Holding us together. You know, that's crazy. So dumb. But, but yeah. Shout out to. [00:12:21] Speaker A: Crazy analogy. [00:12:23] Speaker B: We talked about. You could talk to them. We talked about Parker's. Go call Coach Parker, Dora. He'll know. I, I, I. Please. Anyone listening, call him Dora. I'm sure he doesn't listen to our podcast, so call him, Dora. If you see him, he'll be really confused. But maybe he needs to start watching the podcast. Right. So maybe. Either way, good job. [00:12:44] Speaker A: Cross country. [00:12:44] Speaker B: Yes. Yeah, we're looking forward to regionals. When is regionals? [00:12:47] Speaker A: Nationals. [00:12:48] Speaker B: I mean, not regionals. Yeah, nationals it is. [00:12:50] Speaker A: So they, they race in two weeks. [00:12:52] Speaker B: Okay. [00:12:53] Speaker A: On this. On the seventh. And then I think it's off a week it's in. It's the week before soccer and volleyball nationals. So I think it's like the fall. Is it the following week or is it. I'm not sure. Yeah. [00:13:08] Speaker B: Because they have a race in a few weeks. [00:13:09] Speaker A: Yeah. They go up to Luther on the seventh. [00:13:11] Speaker B: Yep. So next week they go to Luther and then they have a. Another race after. Yeah. Yeah. So we'll talk to you more about national as it comes up. We'll remind you the rul and everything. But cross country. Really excited for the both men's team. Men's team qualifying and as individuals and our Anna Riley and Lily individually qualifying for women's cross country. So we're excited. We'll see what next year will hold, but Nationals coming up. And speaking of, you know, Nationals, conference tournament stuff going on, our soccer team. Soccer team just went down to Des Moines to have a neutral site. Neutral site. [00:13:51] Speaker A: Playing game for the tournament as opposed to driving nine hours to Barkley and playing the playing game and the loser goes home. They met in the middle and played Ozark. So rematch from earlier in the season when we end up tying with them. 1 1, I believe. Correct. And they. It was really interesting because they played in an indoor facility. [00:14:11] Speaker B: Yeah, it was nice. [00:14:12] Speaker A: It was super nice. [00:14:13] Speaker B: But Tucker kept hitting. [00:14:14] Speaker A: I know every time Tucker punted the ball from goal, it hit the. Hit the ceiling. [00:14:19] Speaker B: Yeah. The ref had to keep stopping the clock and walk the ball back to Tucker, have him just throw it or kick it. [00:14:24] Speaker A: Is it a dead ball? Like, was it a dead ball? [00:14:26] Speaker B: Sometimes he. He did sometimes. [00:14:28] Speaker A: Or sometimes he didn't do anything. And there are other times when that is weird. [00:14:31] Speaker B: Yeah. I'll be honest. You never want. You, you, you never want to put the game in a ref's hands. You want to play well enough where the outcome is not determined by the refs. But at the same time, on the other hand of that argument, it always stinks when the outcome is because of the refs. And there were a lot of poor calls and no calls in the match against Ozark that favored Ozark over Emmaus. [00:14:59] Speaker A: Ref was busy. He handed out, I think like five, six yellow cards. [00:15:03] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:15:03] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:15:04] Speaker B: It was all over there. There. Yeah. I mean, we don't know what was going on on. On the field, but I know a lot talking to some of the, the players, one of our players who did receive a red card, which doesn't happen amass a lot. So it's. I don't like it when we get a red card. I don't think we should. I mean, it's, it's against his. [00:15:22] Speaker A: It's. It was. [00:15:22] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:15:23] Speaker A: It was just two yellow. Physicality yellow cards. Yeah. [00:15:25] Speaker B: And. And it got to a point where the ref. A lot of players said that of course they're going to stand up for their teammate, but saying it didn't. Doesn't. There wasn't a foul. It was just more the ref being fed up with some antics of both teams, I guess. Yeah. Yeah. So. But with all that said that we. We lost 3. 1. [00:15:46] Speaker A: 3 1. So we're out of the conference tournaments. [00:15:48] Speaker B: Out of conference tournament now we're looking ahead to regionals. But with, with. I mean, not to continue talking, but I'm going to. I know I don't wanna. I don't want us to sound like we're blaming the refs for our game because I think at the end of the day, it was just poor performance. Poor performance on the guys. The same thing of not being able to finish the game, not being able goals. And it was just a really tough loss. [00:16:12] Speaker A: It was. And it was. And it's tough because like we talked about the momentum that they had from earlier, from the. From the previous Saturday when they tied with cccb, who's. The UN Was the undefeated number one team in the conference and the number six team in the nation. [00:16:28] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:16:29] Speaker A: Which was a huge boost for our guys to tie. I mean, you never want to tie, but to tie with a team of that caliber, like, that was really good. [00:16:38] Speaker B: And it wasn't that they were playing bad. [00:16:40] Speaker A: No, they played. [00:16:40] Speaker B: Of course, they probably told themselves they. [00:16:41] Speaker A: Played bad, but I mean, our guys played really well. [00:16:44] Speaker B: We played very well and they were playing well against us too. Yeah. [00:16:47] Speaker A: And so it just thinks that, you know, going into the game on Tuesday, that they were not able to continue with that or push and finish against Ozark. And also recapping before last episode, we played Maranatha last Thursday, so a week ago, and they're receiving votes. So good, good, talented team. But we lost at home 0 to 2. And so, yeah, we're still kind of in this tough stretch, this, this really tough 10 game stretch where we're 0, 8 and 2. And, you know, the goals have been hard to come by, but hopefully with this week of rest, now that we're not going to the conference tournament and going into a very tough matchup at regionals, but hopefully guys will be rested and ready to go to make one final push. [00:17:39] Speaker B: And it's gonna be tough with those cards. Some players won't be able to play, but, man, you, you. You said it. Well, it's. It's very disappointing for us who, who really care about the sports here at Emmaus. It's tough. Not, not, not on the outcome of the game. Of course you want to win. You know, you want to honor, glorify Christ above all. And you know, when you have cards, you feel like you're not doing that, but at the end of the day, you feel for the players because you. [00:18:06] Speaker A: Just want to finish well. Like, you want to, like, obviously want to do everything to glorify the Lord, but also we want to, you know, whether you're on a win streak or a lose streak, you're playing well, you're playing not well. You at Least want to finish the season on a good note. And whether that's a win or loss, it's just, you know, how you compete and how you play. [00:18:21] Speaker B: Yeah. And your attitude. [00:18:23] Speaker A: And your attitude. [00:18:23] Speaker B: Right. And it's just. [00:18:24] Speaker A: That's. That's. That thing is, that is one of the more crucial things. [00:18:28] Speaker B: And you just feel. Yeah, you just. You just feel for the guys, knowing that a lot of them want it. They maybe all of them want it, but they just. They just can't. Hopefully they can't, you know, get the ball rolling. Yeah. Chemistry is not there sometimes. And, you know, you want to see that game they played against CCCB every day. Every day. And it's. It's tough. Yeah. It's just. There's not. There hasn't been a game this year. Maybe they maybe won, like Northwestern, but. But we played a great first half against Northwestern. There hasn't been a lot of games this year where I personally, you know, try to hold an unbiased opinion and would look at the team. I'll tell you if that team's better. There hasn't been a team this year that I said that team. [00:19:11] Speaker A: Maybe the. Maybe when we played Barkley at Manhattan early in the season. Maybe. [00:19:15] Speaker B: Yeah. I mean, like. What do you mean? [00:19:18] Speaker A: That we're better or that they're better? [00:19:20] Speaker B: No, no, no, no. That they're better. The other team. [00:19:22] Speaker A: We're better than Manhattan. [00:19:23] Speaker B: No, that's what I'm saying. [00:19:24] Speaker A: Barkley. Oh. [00:19:24] Speaker B: I mean, it's hard to say. I mean, everything'. Everybody's gonna say they're better. But the. I'm better than the talent that we are playing against, isn't. [00:19:34] Speaker A: That crazy difference? [00:19:35] Speaker B: No, it's not crazy. Different. The outcome doesn't. The outcome of the. The. The box score does not portray the talent we have on our team. And that's the frustrating part. Then that's what I feel bad for. For these players, for our men on the soccer team, because they know, we all know how talented they are, the talent they have and what they can't. The outcomes that they should be having. Because if you look back at all the film, the plays are there, the runs are there, the shots are there, but nothing is going in. And it's not. It's not necessarily the goalie doing a fantastic job, even though there are some great saves that our opponents have, but it's just us not taking those opportunities. And, man, it's just really tough. Yep, it's really tough because we have a. We have a fantastic goalie who. Who's able to stop the goals. And we haven't had a. We haven't had a lot of good shots on goal this year. And that's no shame or blame to, you know, any specific player. It's just, it's, it's everyone across the board. You're somebody who has carried that ball onto your opponent's side of the field or even have shot a goal, then it's, it's something there, you know, that's, it's, it's partly your fault as well, but it's just sad. It's sad because we all know, we all know the what, what, what the outcome should be or could be. So be praying for these guys. I know a lot of them are super discouraged right now. And you want, like you said, you want the season to finish strong, especially on the attitude side of things, so that we can center and glorify God on the field. [00:21:04] Speaker A: Because, you know, if you think about it like, you know, sports mirror life, like, how are you going to respond in life later down the road when things get tough? And this, how you respond now in this environment, in this situation is gonna, is gonna show you how you're gonna respond later in life when something like that happens. [00:21:23] Speaker B: Yeah. So be praying for the men's team. We'll talk more about their regional matchup next week. But we still have a team going. [00:21:33] Speaker A: We do. [00:21:33] Speaker B: To conference tournament play this weekend in. [00:21:37] Speaker A: Volleyball, the number six rated team in the nation. [00:21:40] Speaker B: Volleyball, awesome, man. [00:21:42] Speaker A: It's kind of funny that they're also. [00:21:43] Speaker B: They've been playing. They've been playing so well. They just had an amazing match against Judson earlier this week. Matt, tell us about it. [00:21:50] Speaker A: Yep. So I'm going to rewind a little bit further than that. Covering the three games that we've played the last week. We started off last Friday. NAI opponent Hannibal LaGrange down in Missouri. Great game. We won 3 to 1. It was pretty, pretty awesome environment down there. And you know, our girls, they had a raucous dune section that our girls just quieted because of how well they played Sailor had. Sailor had 19 kills and Will's hiding over there. Sailor had 19 kills in that game. Just dominated. It was, yeah, it was a great performance by them. And then they turned around the next day and played at Tracy B. [00:22:30] Speaker B: What'd you say? [00:22:32] Speaker A: Tracy B. That's what everyone calls them. Tracy 1, 3, 0. The second set. They dominated. They won 25 to 7. [00:22:40] Speaker B: Tracy B. [00:22:41] Speaker A: And Kate led the way with 11 kills, but she had, I think, either seven or eight of her kills in the second set. So she kind of took that set over. And then going to the game that you alluded to earlier on Monday. Yes, Judson University, another NAI opponent, also NCAA Division 1 team, came to down. We played them last year, but yeah, we played them at home and they took the first two sets and it was looking like, oh, this might be a quick game. But then the girls gritted through it. They won the third set. They kept pushing. They won the fourth set all the way to the fifth set when it was tied 13 to 13. [00:23:22] Speaker B: Crazy man. [00:23:23] Speaker A: It was an amazing. Judson ended up pulling through and won 4:15 to 13. But to compete with Judson, which is, you know, a good team, they're a really good NAI program. To see the, the, the ladies play them and to play that well, it was, it was awesome. Shane. It was really good. [00:23:40] Speaker B: Scholarship, Scholarship athletes, man. Yeah, it is playing against scholarship athletes, students who are paid to play volleyball. And we're, we're winning. We're taking them to the fifth set. Very impressive. Extremely impressive. Those are the moments you live for. [00:23:53] Speaker A: Those are the moments you live for, right Landon? But that was really cool. Like with that game, you know Alice Green on our team, she got to play against her older sister Maisie. So that was really cool to have the family, the battle going on because they, they play, they battle each other at the net. It was cool. Like her, their parents walked in with a shirt that said it's complicated and they had the Judson eagle and the Emmaus eagle. [00:24:15] Speaker B: I love it. [00:24:16] Speaker A: And it was yeah, I love these. [00:24:17] Speaker B: Parents making their own. I know their moan shirt. [00:24:19] Speaker A: And then Judson volleyball social media page posted about that's cool afterwards. But yeah, I know. Just like Shane, it was like they played incredibly well and it was so cool to see them battle through being down 2 0. Yeah, like that is tough to be down 20 and to continue fighting like it is hard. But they, they were two points away from in the fifth set. Like it was truly amazing. They played really well. Sala finished off with 16 kills. We're able to honor Jennica which we talked about last week but at the game honor her as the number one all time leader in digs. [00:24:54] Speaker B: Dogs, man, give her something through that game. What's another one? [00:24:57] Speaker A: Salah also is there another one? Became number two all time in kills for the Lady Eagles. So right now number one and number two. [00:25:03] Speaker B: That's crazy. [00:25:05] Speaker A: Right now. [00:25:05] Speaker B: Dang say's not too far behind she. [00:25:07] Speaker A: Yeah, so it was. Yeah, they've been playing really good. It's been really cool to see that, obviously. And it's cool to see the, The. The coaches recognize that with them being the number six seed in the nation, you know, team. In the nation, I should say. [00:25:19] Speaker B: Do you know what is a. What's in common of all three of those young women? [00:25:27] Speaker A: What's in common? [00:25:28] Speaker B: They are. [00:25:28] Speaker A: They. [00:25:30] Speaker B: They are all elementary education majors. I don't know. I just thought about that. It's true. [00:25:34] Speaker A: Sailor and Caitlin. Caitlin are Jennica's math secondary. [00:25:39] Speaker B: No, she's also elementary, isn't she? [00:25:41] Speaker A: No, she was secondary math. Unless you switched. [00:25:44] Speaker B: I thought she was elementary. [00:25:45] Speaker A: Oh, okay. [00:25:45] Speaker B: Say let us know because she's been in. She. They've always been talking to my visitors who are here for elementary. I like that education. [00:25:52] Speaker A: But what's in common with Caitlin and Sailor's parents as they. They played. They both played sports at Judson. [00:25:58] Speaker B: That's true. [00:25:58] Speaker A: So it's, you know, Alice's sister at Judson. And then Caitlin's mom and dad went to Judson, and then Salah's mom and dad went to Judson. And Sailor's mom was a. Was a pretty good volleyball player. [00:26:12] Speaker B: Pretty. [00:26:12] Speaker A: For the Judson Eagles. [00:26:14] Speaker B: Really good. She was super cool, honestly. Very, very awesome. See the, this women's team rally and. [00:26:23] Speaker A: At the end of the season, programs. [00:26:25] Speaker B: Awesome, man. I'm like, so super happy for them. It's been, it's been fun. It's cool. Because you, you, you were talking about how it was 20 at the beginning. Yeah. And we. Our boss. Yeah, our boss was. He couldn't watch the game because of something like a life group or anything. I think he had a sick, sick kid at home. He went to go watch the whole game on YouTube from the beginning. No commercial breaks, just a rewatch. Right. And it gets. It gets to the third set. It's there. Justin's up to zero. He's like, man, this is gonna be quick. And he looks at the time left and it's like there's like an hour left. [00:27:03] Speaker A: Wait a minute. [00:27:04] Speaker B: What happens? What then he's like, he's like. Did the live stream just, like, carry on? [00:27:08] Speaker A: Yeah, did someone forget to turn the live stream off? [00:27:10] Speaker B: So, like, if that, if that tells you anything about how hard it is to come back from a two zero, there's that story from. To go on, you know, two going to three sets. You know, after two or I guess five total. It's tough. But our women's team did it and, man, this is the time for them going into this tournament is the time they're serious. [00:27:31] Speaker A: Get rolling. [00:27:32] Speaker B: They're serious this year, man, because I remember last year we talked about how they didn't care too much about conference. It was just about regionals, getting nationals. But you, you, you talk to the women this year, they're like, they're serious about conference this year. They're serious about regionals, they're serious about nationals. And let's. It starts now. Starts now. At, at a conference. We're playing against Ozark first round. If you beat Ozark, you play Manhattan. [00:27:57] Speaker A: The number one seed. Number one seed, the semifinals and winner goes to the conference. [00:28:02] Speaker B: But they're not just the number one seed in the, in the conference, they're the number. Want to see the nation and the nation. And here's my thing, man. [00:28:08] Speaker A: All right. [00:28:09] Speaker B: You know, I know Manhattan listens to us and you guys are really good, right? But if Manhattan, if you aren't thinking about conference, if you're just thinking about nationals because you're the number one team in the nation, you haven't won, even though you feel like you should have the last, like two or three years could have won. Should have, could have, right? Been one of the best teams in the nations. I'm giving you your flowers. [00:28:28] Speaker A: But if you're not focused on a sign. [00:28:30] Speaker B: Yeah. If you're not focused on conference this year, I know you might not care about it, you might not care about it. And that's all right. But if you're not focused on conference this year, watch out. Because if our, if our women's team, they beat Ozark and they're playing you. Just saying, watch out. If you're not focused on conference against Judson. Just saying, man. I'm just saying. Better watch out. [00:28:47] Speaker A: Better watch out. Shout out to the ladies. This is their third straight double digit win season. [00:28:52] Speaker B: Awesome. [00:28:53] Speaker A: Nice. Big accomplishment there. But yeah, with that, yeah. Ozark Friday at 3pm we win. We play Manhattan that night at 7. I believe if we lose against Ozark, Manhattan play in the Constellation Championship on Saturday. [00:29:05] Speaker B: Gotta focus on conference. [00:29:07] Speaker A: Am. [00:29:07] Speaker B: Focus on conference Manhattan. And then you can, then you can get your, your national championship. But get through conference. [00:29:13] Speaker A: Get through conference or not. [00:29:15] Speaker B: Your choice. [00:29:16] Speaker A: Uhhuh. [00:29:16] Speaker B: Your choice. So I'm excited to see our women's team this year and what they're able to do at conference and carry that into regionals. And I know, I know they're itching, everyone's itching for regionals because that gets you to nationals. But got to focus on the game now. Focus now. And uh, they're ready. This is their time. Man, I'm. I'm excited to see what happens, but. Yeah. So be praying for the women's team as they travel this weekend for conference. It's gonna be exciting. [00:29:40] Speaker A: I believe they left this morning or at lunchtime. I think so. [00:29:44] Speaker B: Yep. [00:29:46] Speaker A: But, yeah, that's true. And a little bit before we move on to our fast break section, talk a little bit about the men's basketball scrimmage from Tuesday night. Clark it is where my heart is against Clark University. Another man. We've been playing a lot of Nai opponents lately. Hey, we love over here in town is Nai. [00:30:06] Speaker B: And it's crazy that they're. The athletes that go to Clark and Dubuque are the only ones that get paid. Right. While the UD Boris paid. I guess so. A scholarship. Scholarship, yeah. The UD and the Laura students, anyway, don't get scholarships for sports. Even though I think the UD's program is much larger than Clark's. [00:30:25] Speaker A: I think so, too. [00:30:25] Speaker B: Yeah. I mean, it's not even. I think it's true, but. [00:30:28] Speaker A: Yeah, I know Clark and UD scrimmage, I think, last week, but, yeah. [00:30:30] Speaker B: Who won? [00:30:31] Speaker A: I wonder. [00:30:33] Speaker B: Tell us about the match. [00:30:34] Speaker A: Yeah, so, yeah, I mean, kind of like a, you know, kind of an unknown going into this because this was Clark's first, you know, game, so there wasn't a lot. And it's a pretty new team for them, so they had a lot of new guys. So it wasn't, you know, wasn't sure what we're gonna get from them. You know, kind of. We kind of knew what we were going to get from us, but also we weren't sure because when we scrimmage, you know, the Waldorf JV team the week before, that wasn't a really good gauge on where we're at because, yeah, it was just. It was tough. Like, yeah, we won by a lot, by almost 50 points. So it was hard to get through system stuff. But going into the game, no, our guys played really well. Even with Josh. Josh was out, unfortunately. [00:31:18] Speaker B: Oh, dang. [00:31:18] Speaker A: But he should be back. [00:31:19] Speaker B: So that's my guy. [00:31:20] Speaker A: Is my guy, too. But yeah, it was. [00:31:22] Speaker B: They boots right there. [00:31:24] Speaker A: Boots. But they played really well. First half, it's pretty close most of first half. And then Clark went on a bit of a run to end the half, but. And then second half, it kind of stayed at about a 20 point swing. We ended up losing by 23 points. We lost 94 to 71, which is the closest we've ever played Clark ever Yeah. Which was tremendous. Of our guys, we had, man, they played, they played really well. Like, we had. I mean, obviously there's things you can work on. Like we had 26 turnovers, so obviously we need to clean that up. But, you know, Nathaniel Wagner played really well. He had 18 points. You're just shouting him out because rebounds. He did get on the dunk counter. [00:32:04] Speaker B: Finally. I was talking to Nathaniel today at lunch. I'm like, I don't, I don't know if Matt cares about winning or losing. He just cares if you dunk. [00:32:12] Speaker A: That's a hot take. That's crazy. [00:32:13] Speaker B: That is just joking, buddy. [00:32:15] Speaker A: That's like when you were on the live stream like four years ago and you're like, like, oh, what's gonna happen? It's gonna be the dunk counter. Oh, there you go. Matthew, you can add that during the game. [00:32:23] Speaker B: I did. Yeah, of course. Yeah. Because you love the dunk counter. [00:32:26] Speaker A: What? I'm just saying it's fine. I went through four years on this team and nobody dunked. So it's fun that now we have. [00:32:33] Speaker B: And you were the cause. [00:32:34] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. [00:32:35] Speaker B: Where's your hops? [00:32:35] Speaker A: I missed my dunk. Anyway, Noah Samisky hit five threes. He had 18 points. You know, guys just played all around. You know, Collier, he blew up the stat sheet with rebounds, assists. He had three blocks. He had some really nice blocks on their big guys. And I think he finished with, with eight points. And so he's playing like the Kansas. [00:32:52] Speaker B: City Chiefs right now. [00:32:54] Speaker A: He's a Chiefs fan. [00:32:55] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:32:55] Speaker A: But, yeah, it was really cool. A lot of, A lot of them missed. There's probably close to 30 to 40 EMA students that came out to the game. [00:33:01] Speaker B: Yeah, that's something you were talking about. [00:33:02] Speaker A: That was really cool to see that, you know, in a, in a crazy environment that we were in a lot of hecklers, but it was cool to see. It was really cool to see, you know, our students and, you know, the guy like our, our basketball team just, you know, they weren't flustered. They didn't, you know, feedback to all of like the trash talking negativity. They just were great representations of Christ and it was really cool to see. But yeah, excited about that scrimmage. We have, you know, a week and a half of practices until our first game. [00:33:33] Speaker B: Who's the first game? [00:33:35] Speaker A: It is Trinity Bible College and Seminary from North Dakota. [00:33:39] Speaker B: They have a pretty, they have a pretty good team. [00:33:40] Speaker A: They do. Their coach, Jordan, has been there for a long time and he has a well established program. [00:33:44] Speaker B: Yeah. So that's gonna be good. Can't wait to talk about that next week or in two weeks. [00:33:48] Speaker A: Next week or two weeks. Yep, yep. [00:33:51] Speaker B: We got a lot going on these next two weeks with basketball starting tournament plays, so be patient with us. [00:33:58] Speaker A: Yep. [00:33:58] Speaker B: We'll be here. [00:33:59] Speaker A: We'll be here. Hopefully. [00:34:00] Speaker B: Yeah, I think. [00:34:01] Speaker A: But on that note, Shane, we have our quick fast break section. Hey, let's go fast, Brad. [00:34:07] Speaker B: This is new. Only reason I do this now is fast break. [00:34:11] Speaker A: All right, Shane, I have some NCCA questions for you. [00:34:17] Speaker B: Boring. [00:34:17] Speaker A: I know it is, but it's great because for those that don't know about the ncca Great Run organization, you should visit their page to learn more about. [00:34:25] Speaker B: We talked about this before, but it's crazy how much the NCCAA has grown over the years. [00:34:30] Speaker A: It really is. [00:34:31] Speaker B: I remember when, in 2016, when we were both students, there's like, the website was not that good. [00:34:38] Speaker A: No, it wasn't. [00:34:38] Speaker B: But there's like, where do. We're like, I type in. NCCAA can't find anything. But now you type it in. Even on, like, you know, a random domain, like, it pops up. Pops up. [00:34:48] Speaker A: Yeah. They've. They've done so well with marketing and just improving it as a whole. It's been really cool to see either way. But. Shane, I got some questions for you. Shane. [00:34:55] Speaker B: Yes, sir. [00:34:56] Speaker A: Shane, how many colleges, universities are part of of the nccaa? [00:35:03] Speaker B: How many colleges or universities now the. [00:35:07] Speaker A: NCCA is in is North America. So it's US and Canada. [00:35:11] Speaker B: Stretching, huh? I can't see anything. I'm gonna guess like. Oh, that's hard, man. [00:35:17] Speaker A: It is hard. [00:35:18] Speaker B: Oh, is it in the hundreds? [00:35:19] Speaker A: It is not in the hundreds. [00:35:21] Speaker B: Okay, I'm gonna go with. I'm going like 86. [00:35:28] Speaker A: 86. They finally answer. [00:35:29] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:35:30] Speaker A: Dang, that's close. 88. 88. N, double C, double A institutions out there. All right, Shane, off that note, what state has the most schools that are a part of the nccaa? I'll give you a hint. [00:35:46] Speaker B: Missouri. [00:35:47] Speaker A: Okay. [00:35:48] Speaker B: I don't know. [00:35:48] Speaker A: Give a hint. There's also a second one. Missouri is correct. Missouri is correct. But there's also a second state. [00:35:55] Speaker B: No, no. Florida maybe. It's either South Carolina, North Carolina or Florida is my guess. And I'm gonna go with South Carolina maybe. Oh, or. Or Georgia. It's one. Is it one of those? Have I said it? [00:36:11] Speaker A: You have not said it. Oh, good. [00:36:14] Speaker B: I should have told me that. [00:36:15] Speaker A: But Florida is not. Is on the number two ring. [00:36:19] Speaker B: Could be Michigan. Can you give me A region. Ooh, maybe Minnesota. [00:36:25] Speaker A: You're way too north. [00:36:26] Speaker B: Okay, well, I mean, I said maybe Minnesota. [00:36:29] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:36:29] Speaker B: Okay, so it is south. I'm thinking Texas. I gotta go Texas. [00:36:35] Speaker A: It is Texas. Texas and Missouri both have seven. Seven institutions a piece. [00:36:41] Speaker B: I was more excited there than most of the cross country runners. When they finish. All right, let's go. [00:36:46] Speaker A: Next question. Shane, how many from Canada? [00:36:50] Speaker B: How many? [00:36:50] Speaker A: How many from Canada? [00:36:52] Speaker B: Four. [00:36:53] Speaker A: Four. [00:36:54] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:36:54] Speaker A: Divide that in by two. Dang it. Are two schools. Redeemer University and Providence. Who comes to town in two weeks? All right, two more questions. Okay. How many years has Emmaus been a part of the nccaa? No, now with that, there were. We've been a part of it in three different spurts. Yes, but how many years has Emmaus been a part of? [00:37:14] Speaker B: Total. [00:37:15] Speaker A: Yeah, total combined. [00:37:16] Speaker B: Is it 20 plus? [00:37:17] Speaker A: It is 20 plus. [00:37:18] Speaker B: Yeah. I thought so. If you're talking about most recent. Less than 20. [00:37:21] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:37:24] Speaker B: It'S less than 30. [00:37:25] Speaker A: Less than 30. [00:37:28] Speaker B: We're gonna go with. I want to go 21 because it's my favorite number. [00:37:33] Speaker A: LT. [00:37:33] Speaker B: But I'm not going to because I don't think that's it. And if it is, I'm gonna just walk away. 24. [00:37:41] Speaker A: 24. Yeah, it is. 29. [00:37:44] Speaker B: Dang it. [00:37:45] Speaker A: There was one year in the 70s, and there was 93 to 2012, and then 2017 till present. Last question, Shane. [00:37:52] Speaker B: Yes. [00:37:53] Speaker A: How and what year was the NCCA established? [00:37:57] Speaker B: What year? [00:37:57] Speaker A: What year? [00:37:59] Speaker B: Nccaa. [00:38:00] Speaker A: Yeah. What was the first with that? [00:38:03] Speaker B: Or was it like, oh, my goodness. [00:38:05] Speaker A: They ran a basketball tournament with five schools. [00:38:08] Speaker B: 19. Who was in 1950s or 1960s? How long have they been around? I'm gonna go wait. The century or like, the exact date? The exact year? [00:38:25] Speaker A: Exact year. [00:38:26] Speaker B: All right. Was it during the Vietnam War? [00:38:31] Speaker A: It was around that time. [00:38:32] Speaker B: Okay, so I'm gonna go with. Man, I forget when the Vietnam War ended. 1960. Man. Someone's gonna. History check me, Kevin. It's gonna be bad. I'm gonna go with like, 19. He said around that time, right? Yeah. [00:38:51] Speaker A: Yes. [00:38:51] Speaker B: I'm gonna go 1964. [00:38:53] Speaker A: 1964. Add four in 1968. Dang it. 1968. [00:38:57] Speaker B: You're gonna get. You're gonna get checked. Okay. See, I went lower because I'm like war. [00:39:03] Speaker A: But so thanks for joining us on Fast Break. [00:39:06] Speaker B: That was a fun one. That was better than I thought. [00:39:07] Speaker A: Oh, good. [00:39:08] Speaker B: Oh, good. [00:39:09] Speaker A: Oh, good. [00:39:10] Speaker B: But, yeah, we just want to thank you guys for listening, being part of this show. We so thankful for you guys making us part of your day. Today's a little longer episode, so we're sorry. We apologize. We just. [00:39:21] Speaker A: But we've had weeks off, so. [00:39:22] Speaker B: It's true. It's true. We're making up and our. Our producer is going to get mad at us and that's okay. [00:39:28] Speaker A: There's a lot to edit it, but that's fine. [00:39:30] Speaker B: Yeah, no, no, that. He's the engineer. The producer is Luke. [00:39:33] Speaker A: Okay. I don't know what the I. [00:39:35] Speaker B: Whatever. [00:39:36] Speaker A: Anything about it. Anyway, follow us on social media, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, whatever else. YouTube. That's where all of our live streams are. A lot of home games up coming up for basketball, so keep an eye out for that. But also keep an eye out on our game posts where you can watch them. If you're in the area, go out there and support them.
