Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: It was a fun match. The first match of the season.
[00:00:02] Speaker B: Great to see for both teams.
[00:00:03] Speaker A: Yeah, great to see what our boys can do.
[00:00:05] Speaker B: It was a good game to start the season.
[00:00:07] Speaker A: We got the dub. I don't think we even said that.
[00:00:09] Speaker B: I think we did.
[00:00:10] Speaker A: We're just so used to winning so much. We don't need to say it. This is not true.
[00:00:15] Speaker B: Not true at all. Five three win against Central, which was awesome.
[00:00:19] Speaker A: And welcome back to the official Emmaus athletic podcast in the nest. I'm your co host, Shane Douglas, here with Matthew Tomlinson.
[00:00:27] Speaker B: Yes, sir.
[00:00:28] Speaker A: My man. How you doing today, Shane?
[00:00:29] Speaker B: How you doing?
[00:00:30] Speaker A: There we go.
One little episode in earlier this week that we dropped. Dropped it a little later, but that's okay. That's okay.
[00:00:36] Speaker B: We do some technical difficulties.
[00:00:37] Speaker A: Yeah, that's fine. We got new things rolling into this year, like we said, good things.
[00:00:41] Speaker B: So.
[00:00:42] Speaker A: Yeah. And I. And what we did mention is that we wanted to try some new things out. And we had some post game interviews that were posted to instagram. I'm not sure if they were posting facebook.
[00:00:53] Speaker B: It was on YouTube.
[00:00:53] Speaker A: Okay, so check out YouTube. Check out our instagram and our social media and watch those postgame interviews with Carlos. Do we posted Jake's as well?
[00:01:03] Speaker B: I think just Carlos's was posted. I think we're in on Jake's to get published.
[00:01:06] Speaker A: Okay, so. So we got two interviews that are gonna be up there, so make sure to check that out. But with that said, matt. How you doing, man? It's been not too long. We see each other every day.
[00:01:16] Speaker B: We do see each other every day, but.
[00:01:18] Speaker A: How you doing, dude?
[00:01:19] Speaker B: Doing good. It's a good day to be the mesie goal. That's all I'm gonna say.
[00:01:23] Speaker A: That's all you gotta say. It's hot out.
[00:01:25] Speaker B: It's so hot.
[00:01:25] Speaker A: It is hot.
[00:01:26] Speaker B: Temperatures have been nuts, but it is. Praise the Lord. It's gonna be cooling down. What's crazy, upcoming week.
[00:01:31] Speaker A: What's crazy is that it's just for. It's just like people from the south.
[00:01:34] Speaker B: Yeah, they're loving it.
[00:01:36] Speaker A: This is normal. It's normal. Yeah, it's hot, but they're okay with it. And then us midwesterners, we get it like once or two weeks throughout the summer or a little bit more than that.
[00:01:44] Speaker B: And I stopped in the gym a couple days ago to peeking at practice. And I was just watching for like three minutes. I was just, like, dripping and like. This is not funny. No, it's not at all.
[00:01:54] Speaker A: No, I don't like it as well. But it's supposed to cool up a little bit next week.
[00:01:59] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:01:59] Speaker A: Today, yesterday was technically, I think, hotter. Yeah, it feels harder today.
[00:02:04] Speaker B: It does.
[00:02:06] Speaker A: So I just can't wait for that fall season to come in there.
[00:02:09] Speaker B: And I just want sweatpants in sweatshirt weather to get back here.
[00:02:12] Speaker A: Can't wear that to work, Matt.
[00:02:13] Speaker B: You can't, but you can wear it after work.
[00:02:16] Speaker A: True. But we're. I mean, going to the soccer games, going to the gym where it's not, you know, blazing hot to watch volleyball.
[00:02:23] Speaker B: Crisp.
[00:02:24] Speaker A: Yeah, it's gonna be. Can't wait for that. I don't know. I don't know what? I don't know. But I just love the seasons. Like, the seasons really get you in the mood. They do sports.
[00:02:32] Speaker B: They really do.
[00:02:32] Speaker A: Like, it's football.
[00:02:34] Speaker B: And just smell that cold air and you're like, Freddie, and it lights. Here we are.
[00:02:38] Speaker A: And then last Saturday, we had a game here. Super hot. Gosh, stinky.
[00:02:43] Speaker B: They had to take a couple water breaks in each half. Cause it was so hot.
[00:02:47] Speaker A: So we had. We hosted a CCCB for their first game in over two years. As we said last time in the episode, they had a team in 2021. Before that, 2016 and so on. So they haven't had a consistent roster in over eight years, with one year in the middle, so.
[00:03:08] Speaker B: But it's good that another conference team finally has a season back. Cause that's huge for conference standings, for just conference as a whole.
[00:03:15] Speaker A: Yeah, and, like, that's what you were saying before. You were really excited for them. And honestly, it was. It was really. It was such a fun. It was a fun match. The first match of the season.
[00:03:23] Speaker B: Great for both teams.
[00:03:24] Speaker A: Yeah. Great to see what our boys can do. We will not play them again this season, which. So that's a new thing that we're doing, is we're not playing conference teams twice. We are only playing them once, except for faith baptist for soccer and volleyball and so on.
So that's unique. That's gonna be different because usually you win a game, you play them again, and it's gonna be a complete different thing, you know? And I was saying that when, if we see CCC be again, if it's in the conference, they will be a better champion or not. Championship, but, like, turn maybe the championship. Yeah, they're gonna be better. They're gonna get the confidence. They're gonna become more physical. Because if you look at the scores, five to three is a. It was a close game at the end. Yes.
[00:04:04] Speaker B: Five three did not depict of how the game actually was, but it's true.
[00:04:08] Speaker A: Two of the three goals were scored on our second team.
[00:04:11] Speaker B: Yep. Late in the game.
[00:04:12] Speaker A: Late in the game, which we took the first team out, put the second team in. So two of those goals were scored there. But altogether, I think our guys played excellent game.
[00:04:21] Speaker B: Oh, I think they did too. I mean, like you said, it was a good game to start the season.
[00:04:26] Speaker A: We got the dub. I don't think we even said that.
[00:04:28] Speaker B: I think we did.
[00:04:29] Speaker A: We're just so used to winning so much. We don't need to say it. This is not true.
[00:04:33] Speaker B: Not true at all. But anyway, five three win against Central, which was awesome. You know, a lot of new faces, not a lot, but a decent number of new faces were out there trying to build that chemistry. But it was really cool because our newcomer, mister Jake Matt.
[00:04:49] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, that guy. Yeah, I almost forgot about him.
[00:04:51] Speaker B: Me too. In his first game in the Maeus Eagle uniform, playing with his twin brother Josh. Three goals, got a hat trick. Oh, yeah, it was awesome. So it was crazy. Started the game off, first half, what it was four one in the first half. Three goals from Jake. Matt J. Matt J. Matt J. Matt J. Matt, Jake, Josh, Jake, Jake.
[00:05:10] Speaker A: Bennett.
[00:05:11] Speaker B: Bennett. He stole it from Carlos.
[00:05:14] Speaker A: Everyone knows Bennett, you stole that goal from Carlos.
[00:05:16] Speaker B: Had a good shot on goal and Bennett just stuck his shoulder out and deflected the ball into the net. So, yeah, it was really good. Tucker had a really good defensive game.
[00:05:26] Speaker A: He did.
[00:05:27] Speaker B: Honestly, our defense allow many shots. The only goal that he allowed was a PK. It was a penalty in the box and then they got a.
[00:05:34] Speaker A: Took away a clean sheet. Took away clean sheet for Tucker, but.
[00:05:37] Speaker B: Played a really good game. So.
[00:05:38] Speaker A: So, I mean, that's the thing is that we do have a lot of our incoming freshmen, first year students were some of the star.
[00:05:47] Speaker B: Yes, we started three freshmen, so.
[00:05:48] Speaker A: Yeah, and some of the two of the two of the three on the back line.
[00:05:51] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:05:52] Speaker A: So it was. I would say it was a little rough and to get right into it, but a lot better than we've seen.
[00:05:58] Speaker B: In the past is encouraging.
[00:05:59] Speaker A: Exactly. Props to JD Miller and Seth Carl. Seth Carr playing center back and Evan.
[00:06:04] Speaker B: Steele hasn't been there.
[00:06:05] Speaker A: This is true. So there's no. There's almost, honestly, no chemistry in the back. Yeah, zero chemistry.
[00:06:09] Speaker B: They played really good.
[00:06:10] Speaker A: The only thing that's consistent from last year is Caleb Hunter being a left back with Tucker and goal. Besides that, it's all new and they played an excellent game when they were in the game. Yeah.
[00:06:22] Speaker B: So I think there was only one mistake and that was the penalty kick. Yeah.
[00:06:27] Speaker A: Then again, that really comes from, you know, first game jitters. 1st, 1st year of a player. But with both JD and Seth, they, they played our whole defense. Did you know when someone wasn't there, Evan came in. Evan usually swept up whatever garbage was left.
[00:06:42] Speaker B: Honestly, get the ball out of there.
[00:06:44] Speaker A: We would see, I would see Evan running the back, saving the day a lot, and then. But shout out to Caleb Hunter, man.
[00:06:51] Speaker B: The man was with such heart and he was sliding everywhere and getting the ball out of the back of the defense.
[00:06:58] Speaker A: Fantastic man.
[00:06:59] Speaker B: Able to bring everyone back.
[00:07:01] Speaker A: Yeah, he played a great game, everyone. Honestly, our whole team played really good.
[00:07:04] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:07:05] Speaker A: And we're giving a lot of shout outs, but I would say other than obviously Jake, Matt scored three goals first game as a Mes eagle. Awesome. Josh had a great game. Bennett. Bennett scored as well. Carlos had a great game. First game in forever. Such a long time. And he still hasn't scored a goal for Emmaus. So maybe we'll get a winner whiteboard of how many, how many games it takes. Carlos, he rathers assist.
[00:07:30] Speaker B: Yeah, he does have a large number of assists. I think he has seven or eight.
[00:07:34] Speaker A: But I would rather. I want, I still want him. Just have one. Ben. I had to have to stick his shoulders.
[00:07:39] Speaker B: Edwin did score before Carlos, but we wanted his brother.
[00:07:41] Speaker A: Yeah. And then Edwin was hurt. So that gives us more confidence coming in. But with all that said, there's a lot of, a lot of things to look forward to with the team this year. But why this person stood out the most to me personally, as probably their best game ever as the Mas Eagle. And this was Jacob davis.
[00:07:59] Speaker B: Yes. Jacob Davis played game.
[00:08:01] Speaker A: He was the right wing and is.
[00:08:03] Speaker B: The most confidence I've ever seen.
[00:08:04] Speaker A: Him killed it. So shout out, jacob, man, if you're listening, you, you had the best game of your career and let's keep that rolling.
[00:08:10] Speaker B: Shot out the Eels family, too, man.
Yeah, but no, it was really good. And I think, like, it just like we've talked about, you know, these last two years, Will, this being the third year doing this podcast, like, slowly the floor has gotten higher to the ceiling.
[00:08:25] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:08:25] Speaker B: With the talent. And this year it really shows that that floor has been raised a lot.
[00:08:29] Speaker A: It's true.
[00:08:30] Speaker B: And it's all across the board. Like they're like, in the past there have been some like, you know, liabilities here and there, but right now, I mean, with this group that we have, there's not that many. Looks good then compared to previous years, which is super encouraging.
[00:08:45] Speaker A: Mm hmm. Lot to look forward to this year. And I know it's only been one game, but I'm so proud of these boys and what they may have been able to accomplish.
[00:08:52] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:08:53] Speaker A: So far. I mean, they've blown us out of, out of the water for how they've played. And CCTV is not a bad team.
[00:08:59] Speaker B: No, no.
[00:08:59] Speaker A: They're, they are a really good team with a lot of.
[00:09:02] Speaker B: You can tell they're a new team.
[00:09:03] Speaker A: Very.
[00:09:03] Speaker B: They're not a bad team.
[00:09:04] Speaker A: Lots of freshmen. Lots of freshmen on their team. Like we said, 15 freshmen.
[00:09:07] Speaker B: Yeah. 1515 freshman.
[00:09:10] Speaker A: That's wild. Right?
[00:09:12] Speaker B: Trying to figure out how to play together in two weeks.
[00:09:14] Speaker A: When they get that chemistry rolling and they get some a year under their belt, they're going to be something to watch out for. They're going to be a team that you're going to have to circle on the calendar someday. If they can retain these players for multiple years, that's on. Honestly, some of the hardest things. Could you look at the previous years for any sports for a miss? There might be one. Amazing.
[00:09:35] Speaker B: When you think about it, like, you think you talk about all, like, division one basketball and how it's all one and done and going to the NBA, that's almost more like, not that anyone goes to the league from here, but in all our, in our context of our sports, like, that's almost as more here where it's like you get one guy for a year and then they're gonna have to reload and bring in ten more guys next year.
[00:09:55] Speaker A: And that's what I'm getting to look. And of course. Okay, yeah. The 2018 soccer team, if you gave that team one more year. Right. We had tons, a lot of seniors.
[00:10:05] Speaker B: I mean, there were like seven seniors on that team.
[00:10:07] Speaker A: You gave that team one more year. They finally got their, their act together late in their years at a mass.
[00:10:12] Speaker B: Took them long enough, but, but they got there.
[00:10:14] Speaker A: I mean, a lot of it had to do with positioning.
[00:10:16] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:10:16] Speaker A: You know, some people were playing the wrong position, so, and then moving that stuff around and then having the confidence and the right pieces to.
[00:10:22] Speaker B: But the plug in is so true. Like the.
[00:10:24] Speaker A: You gave them one more year, winning a national championship.
[00:10:27] Speaker B: Talent, I mean, you see that, you see that in sports tournaments all the time, where the older, mature team that's a less talented but knows how to play together is usually the team that wins. And it's tough over young talent.
[00:10:38] Speaker A: It's just tough at our level, honestly, in college itself, because you only get them for such a small time.
[00:10:44] Speaker B: But it's exciting to see that with the mats playing together. Four goals right away. I mean, imagine.
[00:10:48] Speaker A: But this is the only year.
[00:10:49] Speaker B: Yeah, this is the only year we'll have later in the season when they've figured it out because they haven't played together.
[00:10:54] Speaker A: I know, but I mean, it looked like they figured it out the first game a little bit already.
[00:10:58] Speaker B: I'm excited for this team because obviously. Yeah. Central, decent team, not a bad team. But these next four games are going to be. Are really going to show who this team actually is.
[00:11:08] Speaker A: Yeah. So, like, looking ahead to this week's sports. So shout out, obviously to our win. We're one. And, oh, first game of the season.
[00:11:16] Speaker B: Ole.
[00:11:17] Speaker A: We win. The may Seagulls are one to know this season as a whole. Looking forward to this week. We had game, five matches and one meet.
[00:11:28] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:11:29] Speaker A: So what do we got? Looking forward.
[00:11:30] Speaker B: Yeah. So sticking with soccer, Shane, this coming Saturday, we have a home match against Spurgeon College, who I think last year we split with them.
[00:11:41] Speaker A: We did.
[00:11:41] Speaker B: We did.
[00:11:42] Speaker A: It was crazy. We had a.
[00:11:44] Speaker B: Yes. We should have been. Oh. But we spilled with them.
So we play them on Saturday.
They're coming. They have. They are bringing in a bigger team. So excited to see how they play. And then on next Tuesday, so as that September 4, we're playing Rippon Rippin, which I think we played them.
[00:12:01] Speaker A: We played them last year at their place. Yep.
[00:12:04] Speaker B: And so they're. I believe they're bigger d three up in Wisconsin. So that'll be a fun game. It's really gonna show this team, like, hey, here we go. Like, we're going right. And this is only gonna help us going into conference, into conference tournament, into regionals to show like, hey, these are the areas that we really need to work on. And if we can get that down against these good teams, that's gonna help us play the great teams.
[00:12:28] Speaker A: I mean. I mean, sticking with soccer here, Spurgeon just won, played two games last week, 150 against Oak Hills and Trinity in North Dakota.
And they brought in a couple transfer students that have really helped their team grow. Yeah, we split last year with them with a very similar roster. We did grow. We brought in more talent. We brought back a lot of talent. So it's gonna be an interesting match.
[00:12:55] Speaker B: Should be a good match.
[00:12:56] Speaker A: And like you said against Rippon Rippin already being a established program in athletics, it's gonna be really cool to see where our team has come and where we're at. Yeah.
[00:13:06] Speaker B: And being a game, we played last.
[00:13:08] Speaker A: Year against being a more talented team this year.
[00:13:10] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:13:11] Speaker A: To see where we stack against a talented team like Rippin and then we will talk about it more the following week. Next week. But then we go to Minnesota.
[00:13:20] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:13:20] Speaker A: The play.
[00:13:21] Speaker B: Northwestern.
[00:13:22] Speaker A: Northwestern.
[00:13:22] Speaker B: So be a big game.
[00:13:24] Speaker A: Really big game.
[00:13:25] Speaker B: So that's a tough stretch coming for soccer, but it's going to be a really good stretch with them to show this team who this team is and.
[00:13:32] Speaker A: Their, their growth, their strength.
[00:13:33] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:13:33] Speaker A: How good they really are. Right.
[00:13:35] Speaker B: I mean, you don't, you know, amaze soccer. I know a little bit about Amazon. I mean, I've been, I don't know soccer as well, but I know Amazon soccer. This team is going to be fun to watch.
[00:13:44] Speaker A: They're going to be really fun to watch. And I. It's just like, I wish we had. We had this team for two years.
[00:13:49] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:13:49] Speaker A: So, boys, if you're listening, you got one year. Let's make the. Let's make the most of it, you know? So speaking of a tough schedule, early.
[00:13:58] Speaker B: On, looking at volleyball.
[00:13:59] Speaker A: Volleyball.
[00:14:00] Speaker B: So volleyball. Yeah. Coach Hannah, we were talking the other day and she was mentioning to Shane about how the way she scheduled this first half the season is to prepare the girls as far as, like, long weekend trips and three games in a weekend, tougher, tougher opponents to prepare them for conference play. To prepare them for conference tournament, which we get a host and then four regionals. So they are traveling up to Minnesota to play three games over the weekend. They're gonna play North Central.
[00:14:27] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:14:28] Speaker B: Tomorrow, on Friday, and then they're gonna play around the Rams, the Crown polers, polers on Saturday. And then they're gonna travel back down to North Central to play Kuiper, which is a regional game.
[00:14:42] Speaker A: Yep. So right there, three tough opponents. Kuiper bringing in a lot of. Lot of talent. This.
[00:14:50] Speaker B: I mean, they have a very good opportunity to go three and. Oh, though.
[00:14:52] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:14:53] Speaker B: So I'm excited. I think it's going to be. I think the girls are really excited because they actually. Cause they had a scrimmage a couple weeks ago, but now they get actually to play a match and it's going to be fun.
[00:15:02] Speaker A: Yeah. Talk. Like, talk.
Tell me about the volleyball team. What's it look like this year? We've talked about soccer a lot last episode, since they're the only team that has played the beginning of this episode. But as we, as we talked about soccer, a lot of hype going in, a lot of talented that was brought in.
[00:15:15] Speaker B: I mean, almost just as much volleyball maybe not a little more hype for volleyball.
[00:15:18] Speaker A: There we go.
[00:15:18] Speaker B: I mean, we brought the entire rotation back and brought in some key pieces.
[00:15:23] Speaker A: Moved people around a little bit, rearranged.
[00:15:25] Speaker B: A couple of positions. But I mean, it's pretty. It's going to be exciting, especially with this group of leaders. So, like, you know, this, like with Michelle coming back with setting, you know, Selah playing the right side. I mean, Caitlin's going to have a monster year playing outside. Lindsey McElveen coming in on with outside. And then our defense is. Our defense is so good, especially with Jenica being the reigning libero of the year for the, for our region and then Lauren. And it's going to be. It's going to be really fun.
[00:15:55] Speaker A: It's a dangerous line.
[00:15:56] Speaker B: It is a danger.
[00:15:56] Speaker A: It's a dangerous team that you can.
[00:15:57] Speaker B: Only once they can figure it out. Like, even like when we played our scrimmage and even like, Kaylee Gertson had a phenomenal game because she got her confidence up and this team is going to make some noise this year.
[00:16:07] Speaker A: Yeah. And really are the scrimmage too, Washington, I mean, I'm not gonna say it was a walk in the park, but.
[00:16:13] Speaker B: I mean, against an NijV team, it was.
[00:16:15] Speaker A: They played really well.
[00:16:16] Speaker B: Played really well.
[00:16:17] Speaker A: So like you said, a lot of.
[00:16:18] Speaker B: A lot of things they need to improve, especially coming for the season. But like, it's gonna be a fun season for volleyball.
[00:16:23] Speaker A: This week's really gonna test our Emmaus athletes, the teams, and it's gonna show us a lot of what this season will look like for both teams.
[00:16:33] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:16:33] Speaker A: For when it comes to volleyball, when it comes to soccer. And we pray, no injuries, no fatigue after a long stretch of tough games, especially on the volleyballs part.
The May soccer boys, they got a long stretch next week against Rippon and Northwestern. So that's going to be really tough. But for the women's team, I'm looking forward to see what they're excited for.
[00:17:00] Speaker B: Volleyball to be back.
[00:17:01] Speaker A: I know.
[00:17:01] Speaker B: I love volleyball and watching our team.
[00:17:03] Speaker A: Play and we got to go a while for a home game.
[00:17:05] Speaker B: I know. I mean, next. So in two weeks, well, we'll have our first home game Saturdays. So far it's like, ah, but we have a try match. So we'll have two games, of course, which is good.
[00:17:14] Speaker A: Of course I love soccer, but the, the atmosphere for a home game for volleyball is all match. It is with any other sports here.
[00:17:24] Speaker B: I mean, our best students section is.
[00:17:27] Speaker A: With volleyball it is easily. We have. We have chance. We have cheers. And it's packed. It's usually packed.
[00:17:33] Speaker B: So Pac Pollard pack.
[00:17:35] Speaker A: Pollard pack the.
[00:17:36] Speaker B: After that, this weekend we have our first race of the year.
[00:17:39] Speaker A: Yes. Yes.
[00:17:40] Speaker B: Actually a home race. And Morris College is hosting the Bob Schultz invite. And so both men and women, the only unfortunate part is our men are not going to be able to qualify for nationals with this race. In this race. Because I think it's. I can't remember if coach said it's a five k or six k. Good to know. They run an eight k. That's what they have to run. I think that's what they have to run. No, you can qualify in a six k time, I think, but not a five k. But the women are running a five k. So they could have a chance to qualify, but the guys aren't.
[00:18:13] Speaker A: That sucks.
[00:18:14] Speaker B: And then it also stinks that the week after is also a shorter race.
[00:18:17] Speaker A: Dang.
[00:18:17] Speaker B: So the guy. So our men's team can't qualify for three race. It'll be the third race of the year. They could then qualify for things. But, yeah, it's. It'd be good to have an in town race. We haven't had an in town race in a while. We are hosting the regional race, which is super exciting, but just to have all our cross country runners here running, it'll be great.
[00:18:36] Speaker A: So, yeah, I mean, that's. That's something that's really new for this team is having two home races. I know two home meets to have at home where friends, family can come cheer you on. Pending on where it is.
[00:18:49] Speaker B: Yeah, I'm not sure where the race course is. Same spot. It's.
[00:18:52] Speaker A: It. Is that the soccer team?
[00:18:54] Speaker B: Okay, so it'll be a similar one to what the regional race will be like.
[00:18:58] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:18:58] Speaker B: As far as, like, the route, I guess, or whatever. So we had super exciting with this team because we have a men's team. All the men, all. Both Christian and Caleb are back and we have, like five more guys. So we have our first official men's cross country team.
[00:19:14] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:19:14] Speaker B: Which is super exciting. Cause you need five runners to count as a team. And then I think we have pretty much all of our girls back, plus three or four additions. And so low key. Our cross country team is like our biggest team on campus, which is super exciting. I'm excited to see what the Girardis, how they're going to train this year and what they're going to do because they made some pretty crazy noise in the past. And, I mean, there is a legitimate shot that the guys team like this guy seems legit.
[00:19:43] Speaker A: So I know we can both testify for is the family, the family aspect with all of our sports, but it's just so much different for cross country. They. They legit because it is. It has been a smaller roster. It's going to be a larger roster this year, so I doubt it changes. But because they've had a smaller roster, they've. It's been. They've just been a family.
[00:20:04] Speaker B: They've sweated together, they've led together, they've run miles upon miles.
[00:20:10] Speaker A: But more than that. More than that of coming together, having.
[00:20:13] Speaker B: Meals, dinners together every night like they're. Every race, they do their team Bible studies together in the dining hall. It's just. It's really. Yeah.
[00:20:20] Speaker A: And no shade on anyone else, but they're some of the most consistent when getting together and being a family, when it comes to Bible studies, when it.
[00:20:27] Speaker B: Comes to something we all can strive for.
[00:20:28] Speaker A: Yeah. I look at them and I. It's encouraging. Right. And, of course, if I'm not on a, you know, an athletic team, but if I was, I would. It would definitely convict me to, you know, get my boys together, get my girls together, and let's. Let's go study the word, or let's go do something fun, right. To bring together the team, to have a family. And they are, you know, not, like I said, I'm not trying to take it that away. The soccer, they do it the right way. They always get together and always be hanging out. During the preseason, the volleyball women would always get the tables together for lunch, for dinner, all the time, you know, and shout out to PJ. Paul Johnson, one of the incoming first year students this year for soccer team. He.
He's a talker, loves talking. Right. And I'm a talker, too. He sat at the volleyball table. He's like, that's the most quiet I've ever been. So, I mean, that tells you a little bit about the. The family they got going on, on the volleyball team. That's.
That's that. But it's gonna be an exciting week.
[00:21:32] Speaker B: It's gonna be a very exciting, gonna.
[00:21:33] Speaker A: Push our athletes, and it's going to a busy week.
[00:21:36] Speaker B: A busy week. But, yeah. So keep an eye on all the social medias because there's gonna be a lot of game updates, because there's a lot going on this weekend.
[00:21:44] Speaker A: Mm hmm. So keep praying for our teams, for their travel, that they can get to the. Where they need to be on time, one piece, hopefully, ideally early, and, I mean, takeaways for the weekend, our volleyball team, honestly, I think to see them succeed and you get. Maybe you can echo this is to have the patience and to have the determination to really to win, to compete, the endurance, to compete against these tough teams back to back to back.
[00:22:17] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:22:18] Speaker A: And for soccer, you know, what I would say is to, you know, go into the Spurgeon game. Spurgeon becoming a little rival of ours. Mm hmm.
[00:22:26] Speaker B: Go into some of these games, have finished these last couple years.
[00:22:29] Speaker A: Let's prove something. Let's prove something. Especially with Spurgeon having two big wins last weekend. It's gonna be fun to see them compete against one another since it's always close. It's always close. And then Rippon will be a big test for our boys. So love seeing that. All right, but before we. Before we end in this podcast, we have our Emmaus athlete.
[00:22:52] Speaker B: Spotlights.
[00:22:53] Speaker A: Spotlights, Shane.
[00:22:54] Speaker B: Here we go. Here's your Emmaus athlete spotlight of the week.
[00:22:57] Speaker A: Yeah. So we want to highlight and spotlight, I guess, spotlight, spotlight. Some of the first year students this year. For the Emmaus soccer team, we have Noah Keller. Noah Keller is a freshman. He's doing the one year bible certificate here at Emmaus. He's from Wawa Tosa, which is a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. So, Noah, I've known Noah for a while. I would go visit his church, Wawatosa Bible chapel.
[00:23:23] Speaker B: Shout out, big friend of the college.
[00:23:25] Speaker A: Love them. I would visit his church a lot. His chapel. And we would. I would go to their youth group. We would do, just hang out, have a lot of fun times. A lot of their youth group students are actually here this year, so good job, Shane. Thank you, sir. So really excited to see those people around. They're like family. A second family to me. I really love them. Noah actually got a start last week. He showed up late because he spent a lot of the summer doing some traveling, some mission work overseas in Italy and Albania. So he got.
[00:23:56] Speaker B: He was literally fresh off the flight.
[00:23:57] Speaker A: Pretty much. Pretty much.
[00:23:59] Speaker B: We had a game and he threw.
[00:24:00] Speaker A: Up first day, too.
So he was that guy.
[00:24:03] Speaker B: He was.
[00:24:04] Speaker A: Sorry, Noah, but. So he started the first game. He was gassed. My goodness. He was gassed within, like, the first 15 minutes. But he was able to play majority of the first half before they gave him a. Gave him a little break, but he played really well, did play really well. But I'm looking forward to see what Noah is able to bring onto campus to the soccer team this year. He's looking to possibly do criminal justice.
So carrying his education on here for four years. So we'll see.
[00:24:30] Speaker B: We'll be doing criminal justice.
[00:24:31] Speaker A: Don't say that.
So we'll see where that goes. But Noah's an awesome dude. So you see him. Give him a. Give him a high five. Pray for him. Pray for these students.
[00:24:40] Speaker B: Keeping it in Wisconsin.
[00:24:41] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:24:41] Speaker B: I'm gonna talk about. For volleyball, one of our freshmen, Lindsey McElveen out of Wisconsin. She's our outside hitter. She is studying counseling psychology here with us. And actually, cool thing enough. Her dad is actually one of our adjunct business teachers. So it's really cool. Through the process of getting to know Emmaus, applying, visiting us, committing, meeting everyone, her dad was like, this is a really cool place, and I know that you need more business teachers. I would really be interested, because I have. He has the credentials to teach business, and so he's teaching a business class.
[00:25:15] Speaker A: Love it.
[00:25:16] Speaker B: And so she's great. She's super energetic. She just loves people, loves the Lord, and really excited to see her compete on the court this year. This weekend is.
[00:25:25] Speaker A: This story reminds me of an old student named Isabel Cook. And her father then started to work out a mas and be adjunct, and then he slowly became full time worker here.
[00:25:41] Speaker B: It also reminds me of another student, Tom's.
[00:25:43] Speaker A: Tom cooks now our boss.
[00:25:44] Speaker B: There was another professor who followed his kids to me. I can't think of his name. I think it was. Oh, yeah, it's my dad, too.
But, yeah. Then moving on. It was funny.
[00:25:55] Speaker A: Matt, good job.
[00:25:56] Speaker B: Yes. Our cross country team. Want to shout out the Hanselman civilians. I had the privilege of attending Emmaus all four years mice with my sibling, and they could do it together. So did you. But we came the same time. They came the same time. You guys came here apart.
[00:26:09] Speaker A: No, we didn't.
[00:26:10] Speaker B: You came the same.
[00:26:11] Speaker A: No, we came at the exact same time, you bum.
[00:26:13] Speaker B: Oh, I don't know that.
[00:26:14] Speaker A: I graduated earlier.
[00:26:15] Speaker B: You did. Sorry, Mandy, but the Hanselman's from right here in Dubuque. Both went to Hempstead high School. Matthew's doing three plus one communications, and Alice is doing nursing. But I. It's just so fun. I mean, yeah, we both experienced that. Being at college with our sibling will kind of gets experienced that, too, with his brother and his sister and his dad. That also works here. But, um, it's just. I mean, having that, it's just a unique opportunity.
[00:26:43] Speaker A: And Matthew, no matter how, going to.
[00:26:45] Speaker B: Make some noise this year.
[00:26:46] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:26:47] Speaker B: On the course this year with cross country.
[00:26:50] Speaker A: So those are our ego spotlights. We. We hope to bring you those more consistent, more more active. We'll start with some of the first year freshmen or first year students here at Emmaus. And just to give you more insight of these students so you can be praying for them. That you can know them when you come here or know a little bit about these students that we are bringing in. Because it's more than just a sport. It's more than just, you know, soccer, volleyball, cross country. Here.
[00:27:15] Speaker B: They are people. They are students first, athletes second.
[00:27:18] Speaker A: This is true. And even before that, they're a child of God.
[00:27:20] Speaker B: They are child of God.
[00:27:21] Speaker A: Right? So their education, their studies, their relationship with the Lord is what we want for our students to come here.
It's a great place to take your relationship with God serious.
[00:27:33] Speaker B: It's an amazing place to do that.
[00:27:34] Speaker A: That's why I was called Emmaus, you know, so we can walk with Jesus and learn more things.
[00:27:38] Speaker B: The road concerning him.
[00:27:40] Speaker A: But with that said, that wraps up our show for today. Thank you guys so much for listening and so much for all your support. We love you. Thank you for gift cards that you have sent us in the Kev dog. There you go.
[00:27:54] Speaker B: We love you. We appreciate you.
[00:27:55] Speaker A: And then also for the future gift cards.
But no, we thank you guys so much for listening. We love it every time when families and friends come on campus and you guys are just talking us like we're all best friends and like sometimes we are. Yeah, some. Yeah, sure. But we do appreciate your love, your support. Your.
[00:28:15] Speaker B: It means a lot to us and a lot to the school as well. And to our student athletes especially.
[00:28:19] Speaker A: So another way to support not just our podcast by listening but also this school is the Talon club. Matt, do you want to talk a little bit?
[00:28:28] Speaker B: Yep. You can become a sponsored talent club member. Go to our website. That's where you can purchase your season passes. And there's various levels that could get you merch and some potential opportunities for being on a show with us.
[00:28:42] Speaker A: Hey.
[00:28:42] Speaker B: Or attending like our athletics banquet. So it's a neat opportunity where you can help partner with the college, help support our teams. And it's just awesome.
[00:28:53] Speaker A: It is awesome. It is. It's a great opportunity to take advantage of. And another opportunities is sending people here for discover Mace weekend. Which will be the first weekend of October. We're gonna have a worship concert again. It's gonna be.
[00:29:06] Speaker B: And registrations have been flying in, which is good.
[00:29:08] Speaker A: So it's gonna be amazing time.
[00:29:10] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:29:10] Speaker A: Just like spring do was an amazing time. And then also homecoming weekend. Yes. What are the dates?
[00:29:16] Speaker B: It's the weekend before due so it's the last weekend of September, so homecoming weekend.
[00:29:20] Speaker A: If you are a friend of the school, if you are aluminous, if you are a family member of someone who attends Emmaus, get over here. Come on out, register, go online, search for homecoming weekend.
Maybe Emmaus at our Emmaus.edu. so come for that. There's gonna be lots of events. Soccer game, volleyball games to go to.
[00:29:44] Speaker B: Even an alumni game for soccer. I don't know if they're doing volleyball yet, but at least there's alumni soccer.
[00:29:49] Speaker A: So come see the campus, hear about what's new, what we're.
[00:29:52] Speaker B: Cause there's a lot of great things that are happening here at Emmaus and.
[00:29:55] Speaker A: How you can get involved, how you can continue your relationship here at Emmaus, or like Matt said, maybe even get on the podcast. You know, we do want to do more things. We want to branch out. So continue to go to our social medias, look at these postgame interviews, maybe even more. There will be more. We have more ideas to be continued.
[00:30:13] Speaker B: But maybe keep an eye out.
[00:30:14] Speaker A: Maybe tune into the live stream for some of the games ahead of time. Ahead of time in the future, right? We'll let you know. But with that said, we thank you guys so much for listening. We appreciate everything you have done, your support and your love to us. When you see us in person or just viewing these videos. But Matt, send us out.
[00:30:36] Speaker B: It's a great day to be an emmaus eagle.
[00:30:38] Speaker A: See ya.
