Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: All the players are almost interchangeable. They have the same size, the same speed, and I do like watching them play. And they're not, not selfish. Players come up there, they do their.
[00:00:09] Speaker B: Things and welcome back to Emmaus official athletic podcast, nns. I'm your co host, Shane Douglas, here with Matthew Tomlinson.
Matt, how's it going?
Matt is not here today. Matt is actually on the road with the basketball team.
Mr. Iverson, you looked so worried. That was great. If you're not watching on YouTube, please go to YouTube and just watch that man. Clip that, clip that chat. Okay?
Yeah. Matthew Tomlinson is on the road today with the basketball teams. The men's and the women's teams headed out this morning, morning of Wednesday is what I'm talking about. Uh, to go down to Manhattan, Kansas for the conference tournament being held there. And we'll get into that this episode. But Today we have Mr. Tim Iverson.
Come on. There it is. That's Will's favorite.
[00:01:08] Speaker A: Thank you.
[00:01:09] Speaker B: This is favorite thing.
Mr. Iverson here was the men's coach how long?
[00:01:14] Speaker A: I believe it was 18 years.
[00:01:16] Speaker B: Boom.
[00:01:17] Speaker A: My son would say I ended in 2016.
[00:01:20] Speaker B: Okay, wow. 18 year vet right here, ladies and gentlemen. All over basketball, this guy knows his stuff. So we kicked Matt out, actually, sorry to tell you Now Matt, because Mr. Iverson knows more insight. Either way, Mr. Iverson, we, we thank you for being here today. Partially last minute, but we, we love and appreciate it and you know, uh, hopefully you get to interact or an audience going to interact with you a little bit and it'll be a good one. It good one be. Thank you either way. Thank you guys for listening, making us a part of your day. We appreciate it for spending time with us sometimes we, we always like to shoot for. I'll be honest, we do want to shoot for like 20 to 25 minutes, 30 at max, but we always go over. So please, please keep us accountable. Everybody, when you see us, keep, keep the podcast rolling and keep listening. But either way, it's always fun and that's a long time to make us a part of today. So we are there. Very, very, very thankful for all of you either way. Mr. Iverson, how are you doing?
[00:02:29] Speaker A: Good, very good, thanks.
[00:02:30] Speaker B: You just taught earth science.
[00:02:31] Speaker A: Just finished teaching earth science a little while ago.
[00:02:33] Speaker B: So he was. He's not just a 16 year old vet. Year old vet. You're 16 year olds. He's not just a 16 year vet for Emmaus men's basketball coaching, but also our applied math professor here at Emmaus University. Yes, yes. How long have you been in this.
[00:02:49] Speaker A: Role, the applied Math? Probably about 2016.
[00:02:52] Speaker B: Wow.
[00:02:53] Speaker A: One. One job, you go to another one. So. Yeah.
[00:02:56] Speaker B: And Will Cunningham, our engineer over here, who makes sure everything is going smoothly, just came out of the same class as Mr. Iverson.
[00:03:05] Speaker A: He's doing a great job. Just keep it up.
[00:03:07] Speaker B: Be honest.
[00:03:08] Speaker A: Oh, really? He really is.
[00:03:10] Speaker B: All right.
[00:03:10] Speaker A: Sit near the front, though. I can make. Have more contact with. Yeah, the brighter students. Not that the other ones aren't bright, but.
[00:03:18] Speaker B: Okay. Well, I tried. I tried to go to the front.
[00:03:21] Speaker A: At the beginning, and then there was.
[00:03:22] Speaker B: No room, so I went to the back.
[00:03:23] Speaker A: They kicked you out? Yeah.
[00:03:24] Speaker B: Yeah. The bright. The smart student said, you're not. You can't be with us. So sorry, Will. Guess you don't fit in with. With them. Not smart enough. Okay. Either way, Mr. Iverson, so 16 years you've been in applied mathematics since then, you. You attended A maze since 2016 fair. Yes.
You attended a maze. Early 80s? Yes, yes. Mid 80s.
[00:03:48] Speaker A: The first year Emmaus moved here to Dubuque.
[00:03:52] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:03:52] Speaker A: As a student.
[00:03:53] Speaker B: So you just did the one year.
[00:03:55] Speaker A: It's the one year certificate.
[00:03:56] Speaker B: And then you went off and got more education.
[00:03:58] Speaker A: Correct.
[00:03:58] Speaker B: Where'd you go?
[00:04:00] Speaker A: Well, I went to Community College, then St. Ambrose, and then to University of Northern Iowa, where I got my degree at awesome. Then I went to work for a while and then jumped back to uni. They got a graduate degree, then came back to Emmaus to teach.
[00:04:16] Speaker B: I love that. And that was before we even had professional degrees, and now we do. So if you came to. If you came today, you could just do everything you wanted to do here.
[00:04:25] Speaker A: Well, I tell students if the applied math program was at Emmaus when I came as a student, would have gotten my degree here at Emas Bible College.
[00:04:35] Speaker B: There it is. This is an athletic podcast anymore. This is applied mathematics. Thank you for joining us to a university applied mathematics podcast. But. Okay, I love that. And honestly, for anyone who's listening, students or. Or alum. Probably not the alum. Maybe alum. You got to talk to this guy, ask him about his stories, especially when he was a student. They are crazy. Crazy.
[00:04:57] Speaker A: I've. I've heard.
[00:04:58] Speaker B: I don't even.
[00:04:59] Speaker A: I. I don't really have any personal.
[00:05:02] Speaker B: Sure. Yeah.
[00:05:04] Speaker A: Experience with those things.
[00:05:05] Speaker B: Everybody, Everybody, nobody. Nobody pegs Mr. Iverson for being. Being a. A crazy guy.
[00:05:12] Speaker A: But I'll have to give credit to my. My RA at the time was Mr. John.
[00:05:17] Speaker B: John Jimmo.
[00:05:18] Speaker A: He was the cause of all those issues.
[00:05:19] Speaker B: And if you know him, you know he is crazy. Either way, Mr. Iverson, we will get into this. We have men's and women's conference coming up. So our women left around noon today. I actually, I actually got back from a school visit. I saw them driving down the interstate. They were in the transit, the big wrapped transit. The women team headed down to Manhattan to play tomorrow against Faith Baptist College at 2pm so make sure to stream into that live stream with Manhattan. We'll probably be saying that throughout this episode, but the women's team will be playing against Faith. We've already played them twice this season, lost both games as our women's team has only won twice in both against Manhattan or Maranatha. But they are ranked the seventh seed in the tournament. So if they're able to beat Faith, they will move on on their side of the bracket and play.
They will play the winner of Bar Clay and Central. Okay, so that is what our, our, our women's team is. Is looking at. So they have. It's a tough road for them to, to get to the semis because Faith is the two seed.
[00:06:28] Speaker A: Right.
[00:06:28] Speaker B: But who knows what could happen. We've been saying all season, Mr. Iverson, that our women's team, the record doesn't really show the effort and the skill of the players. We do have as definitely within the coaching and the strategy with Canard, Coach Canard and staff. So we're. I'm actually super excited. I am very excited and eager. I'm very eager. That's the word. To see our women's team what they're able to do when push comes up because they have nothing to lose.
[00:06:58] Speaker A: Well, and that's the tournament time is always fun because the records go out the window and anything can happen. And that's what's, what's so fun about the tournament because you got it. You got to show up. And it doesn't matter how you competed before, if you got your game together that day, you can, you can pull off the victory. And our girls team has been very competitive.
[00:07:18] Speaker B: Oh yeah.
[00:07:18] Speaker A: I think their, their struggles this year is because of their lack of a deep bench. They have no subs. They just kind of run out of gas near the end of the. There's been several games where they've been really close, but they just do not, do not have. You can't finish because they're just, you're just. When your body's tired, you just can't react the same way when they started off. So if they can just.
What we need is about five more girls on the basketball team.
[00:07:43] Speaker B: There you go. Five more girls, if you're listening, send them our way.
[00:07:47] Speaker A: That's right.
[00:07:48] Speaker B: And make sure they're applied mathematics major. We'd love that as a win. Win for everybody here on this episode.
We were talking a little bit beforehand, Mr. Iverson, about how you were able to try to go to as many home games as possible. Of course, you're a busy man, family man.
And then obviously being on the road pretty much half, if not more than half of the, of the season, watching the live stream, you were talking about how you, you were yelling at the tv.
[00:08:17] Speaker A: I still, I, as a former coach, you have this relationship with the officials.
You respect them, but you still tend to. I mean, I yell more now because they can't, they can't team me up. But yeah, I, I still yell at a lot of the officials and they, but I, you know what? They, I come to the home games here and some of the officials that are still here are still officiating that.
[00:08:38] Speaker B: When I was really.
[00:08:39] Speaker A: We shake hands.
[00:08:40] Speaker B: I guess it wasn't too long ago.
[00:08:42] Speaker A: They're good guys. So they're. Yeah, they. And we, they, they understand competition as well. The good officials understand that.
[00:08:50] Speaker B: You know, have you ever had a referee in your time, your tenure as a coach make a call and then look at you and be like, hey, teed up. And just look to see your reaction?
[00:09:03] Speaker A: No, but I have chased, I have chased officials off the court before.
[00:09:06] Speaker B: What the heck? Here at Emmaus. Yeah, that's crazy.
[00:09:09] Speaker A: I apologize for that. But, yeah.
[00:09:12] Speaker B: Wow. Wow. What was your, what were, did you play basketball in high school?
[00:09:17] Speaker A: I did. I played. I was a baseball, football, basketball player.
[00:09:21] Speaker B: What was your favorite sport?
[00:09:22] Speaker A: Depending on what season it was. I love baseball during baseball season, football during football season, and basketball during basketball.
[00:09:29] Speaker B: That's such a lame answer, but that's what it was.
[00:09:32] Speaker A: That's. I just went from one to the other. I loved it. I was probably best at baseball.
[00:09:37] Speaker B: Okay, so what's your. Are you a Cubs fan?
[00:09:39] Speaker A: I, I am a die hard Cubs fan.
[00:09:42] Speaker B: Well, that's better than a Cardinals fan, which is what Matt is.
[00:09:46] Speaker A: But Matt and I have talked about. We have, we have our conversations.
[00:09:51] Speaker B: Are you all Chicago then?
[00:09:52] Speaker A: Not really. I, I grew up, I do root for the Bears, but I grew up in the. Learning the sports in the 70s, early 70s, and I was a Cub fan. Ernie Banks was my favorite. But then Dr. J with the Sixers. I was a big Sixer fan.
[00:10:11] Speaker B: You're a Sixers fan?
[00:10:12] Speaker A: Yeah, big Sixer fan.
[00:10:13] Speaker B: I'm a Celtics fan.
[00:10:15] Speaker A: You and I have that.
[00:10:16] Speaker B: Eat it.
[00:10:18] Speaker A: And then I. The 72. 70. Well, actually 71. The Miami Dolphins were in the Super Bowl.
[00:10:24] Speaker B: You're a Dolphins fan?
[00:10:25] Speaker A: They lost Cowboys 72. Undefeated season. Well, I became a Dolphin fan for life at that point.
[00:10:32] Speaker B: Guess you had to. Don Shula.
[00:10:34] Speaker A: But I still root for the Bears. There's. Oh, Don Shula. Yeah, definitely. And the Rizanka. Oh, Bob Griesy, Mercury Morris.
[00:10:42] Speaker B: Good old Ricky Williams.
[00:10:43] Speaker A: Ricky, well, you know, he came here.
[00:10:45] Speaker B: Yeah, that was later, obviously, but he came, he ran, he left Marino, Marina's thing.
[00:10:50] Speaker A: So he was, he was one person to cheer for back in the day.
[00:10:53] Speaker B: One of the greatest quarterbacks to play the game and not win a ring.
[00:10:56] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[00:10:56] Speaker B: So you're a Dolphins fan. That's so like. I guess I'm all over the place too. But okay. Dolphins, Cubs, Sixers and baseball was your favorite sport. So he played basketball in high school. And you got into coaching, came to Ms. 16 years here for you and your tenure, and then jumped on faculty for applied mathematics. I'm with you, though. Mr. Iverson with the women's team is. They're a dangerous team to watch out for. You never know what they're going to be able to do. I, I love your insight of. It's kind of zero, zero mentality going into the tournament. Now you know where everyone stands, obviously, seating wise. And you've played each other twice this season, but it's hard to beat a team three times.
[00:11:35] Speaker A: Oh, it really is. And I always, even when I was coaching, our teams would not always be the strongest in the conference. But you go in there and you know who that first game is going to be and you can just focus on playing that team. You know their strengths, you know their weaknesses.
[00:11:51] Speaker B: Oh, yeah.
[00:11:52] Speaker A: And so as I gained experience coaching, you have the coaches meeting afterwards and everyone would say, coming into the tournament, no one wanted to play Emmaus the first round because really they knew that our whole game plan was geared just to take them down.
[00:12:11] Speaker B: Love that.
[00:12:12] Speaker A: And we didn't, you know, we didn't always win, obviously, but those games were much more competitive and the coaches who are higher seeded have much more to lose. And when you have nothing to lose, the guys can go out there and just, just give it their all. And that's what I love about the tournament time. So.
[00:12:31] Speaker B: And we've actually heard from some of the coaches, I mean, being, being our size and our level and of course, having brothers and sisters in Christ, it's more than just a sport. It's more than just a game. We build these relationships with these other teams and the coaches and the players. And we have heard not saying like Emmaus is a team to watch out for. Not saying that for on the women's side. But we have heard from some coaches that they are a little worried. They're, they're a little, you know, nervous to play against our girls because one, it's, it's a kind of a new season tournament style. Like I said, 00. But our women's team really has nothing to lose.
[00:13:04] Speaker A: Right.
[00:13:04] Speaker B: You know, not having a very successful season record wise. We'll get into their highlights of this season which is extremely like not even surprising but like it really, it explains justifies how good our team truly is to see where they stand in the nation against the best of the best at our level. But.
[00:13:28] Speaker A: Well, I can say if you would take film early in the season compared to the end of the season, there is vast improvement in the team concept. They have gotten to figure out they understand each other's abilities and when to pass the ball, things of that nature. So they have become to begin to complement each other a lot better at the end of the season.
[00:13:49] Speaker B: Oh yeah. So some of the, some of the highlights for the Emmaus women's Eagles teams for the regular season for you listeners, if you follow us on social media, you can be able to see these highlights. I'm just going to be reading them off the screen just like you can right now, but we have Rachel Barrett finishing number one in the nation.
Rebounds per game. Number three in total rebounds in the nation. Dog. Come on, where's. Where you at, Will? There we go. Number five in blocks per game for Rachel. Number three in total blocks. So top five in both those categories and blocking and rebounding. Number five and free throw percentage. That's cool. That's good. That's good. The guys need to work on that.
[00:14:34] Speaker A: Definitely.
[00:14:36] Speaker B: Number 11 and the field goal percentage. Number 23 in points per game. Game. Awesome. Yeah, awesome. Shout out to Rachel for a great season.
Then we got Aaron McKenna for the women's team, finishing 19 19th in points per game and number 12th in total points in the nation. Number 12th. That's incredible.
[00:15:00] Speaker A: And, and also she's an applied math major.
[00:15:04] Speaker B: You. There's always, there's always a girl on the women's team who's applied mathematics major.
[00:15:09] Speaker A: Because it makes you a better basketball player.
[00:15:11] Speaker B: There you go. There you go. Physics, right?
[00:15:13] Speaker A: That's all that physics.
[00:15:14] Speaker B: Shout out to Aaron McKenna for a great season.
[00:15:16] Speaker A: What?
[00:15:16] Speaker B: Why, why Did Aaron get that one? But Rachel got the.
[00:15:20] Speaker A: It's okay.
[00:15:21] Speaker B: Whatever, Will. He's changing it up. All right, then we got Maddie. We got number 15 in the nation and three point field goals per game. Shout out to Maddie for a great season. These are great. These are great stats that really show that our women.
[00:15:36] Speaker A: She's also training to be a math teacher.
[00:15:38] Speaker B: Oh my goodness. Dude, I can' Just trying to get.
[00:15:42] Speaker A: Make the correlation that.
[00:15:43] Speaker B: I love it.
[00:15:44] Speaker A: Math helps with basketball.
[00:15:45] Speaker B: I love it. Shout out to our women's team and the success they've had this season and the hard work they've put into. Shout out to Cody Canard and the success. It shows. Not record wise, not rec. I mean we did beat Maratha twice. Pretty rare. Pretty rare. Petty rare.
But they. We see it right here. We see it in the stats. We see it being, you know, number 15 or top 15, top 20 in a lot of the stats with, with those three women. And that also goes to show with the supporting cast that we have. Like you said, we don't have a lot of people on the bench, but we still have those players and those crucial players.
[00:16:26] Speaker A: Everyone's important, so.
[00:16:28] Speaker B: Oh yeah. Well, listen real quickly. What are your, what are your thoughts? What do the, the women's team need to do to be able to pull off a win against face a team that we know very well on, you know, across the sport realm? Right. What will it take for our women's team to. To pull off a win being a, a team that's hungry, a team that has nothing to lose?
[00:16:49] Speaker A: Well, I, I talked to both of them. I had them in class this morning, Aaron and Maddie, and said, yeah, you know, it, it's zero, zero going in. So there's. And you guys know, you know, Faith, you know what they're going to do to you. So you're prepared for that. And they actually competed very well at fa. I can't remember which game it was, but they in one of the games against Faith, it was close most of the way and I said just, you know, you got to go out there. Don't get too antsy at the end. Stay steady. Do. Keep within yourself. That's the key. You can't do more than you can and you're able to do. So a lot of times people try to do too much and then it just makes things worse. You just stay steady, stay steady. And you know, what if they get, if they put it all together, you know, you got, you got an upset bruin right there.
[00:17:39] Speaker B: There it is. I love to Hear that?
If I can just add my two cents. Turnovers. Turnovers. Huge. Huge for the women's team in my opinion this year. A lot of other things to work on too, but turnovers. I feel like you change that turnover margin in majority of their games. They. The. The points won't just shift, but. But so will the record. So will the record. But those.
[00:18:00] Speaker A: You mentioned two things we talked about the idea of free throws. Free throws are important and turnovers. Those two things are the hidden stats nobody ever talks about as a coach. Those are the ones that always, I want to say irritated me, but I focused on the most.
[00:18:15] Speaker B: And that's something you also. I mean, having the gas to finish the game. And it's going to be tough for the women's team not having a lot of bodies on the bench. But our men's team have struggled with that as well this season, even though they do have more bodies on the bench. And. But we just wish the women's team good luck and we'll, we'll circle it back around. But to the men's team and what they got going on, what they got cooking left this morning for Manhattan to play tomorrow at 4:00pm uh, against Central, who we split this year. Uh, 1v1. Uh, both teams winning at home.
[00:18:50] Speaker A: We split, but I think we should have won both those games.
[00:18:52] Speaker B: Yeah, we won by nine at home and then we lost by one at their away. So. Which was very close. No, it wasn't a buzzer beater. We had a chance to win that game though. So it was a close game like you said. I mean, we'll see what happens. But they got our number. Central's got a number from that win. But it is always hard to beat a team three times. I would rather lose to them in a regular season and beat them in the tournament. So if our men's team is able to pull off a win against Central, they will move on to play the next day, which will be Friday at 2pm against or no, not 2pm Friday at 4pm against the winner of Ozark and Barclay. Barclay being the seventh seed in men's and Ozark being the number two seed. Ozark pretty much led the conference the entire season and then lost it based off of a coin flip from what I've been told. Against Manhattan.
[00:19:47] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:19:48] Speaker B: Sucks coin flip. Man. That's so dumb. Yeah, so dumb. But we're not Ozark Norman Hat. And we don't have to talk about that. But we get to play against a very familiar team of Central team that we've gone back to. Back with. Now, Mr. Iverson, I know you watched a lot of the games this season. We are ranked third in the conference, which is awesome. Had one of the most successful seasons in men's basketball history. No offense.
[00:20:13] Speaker A: All right.
[00:20:13] Speaker B: No offense.
All right. All right. These are match words. Okay.
On his. On his social media. So. But it is especially within recent years in Coach Parker's tenure as well as. Since I've been here at Emmaus, we've had coach over after coach after coach after coach. This has been a very successful season and it's a very encouraging. Brings a lot of. A lot of smiles, a lot of breaths of relief. So.
But being ranked the third seed, we were talking earlier of how all the. Within the men's team, men's conference side, all the teams are super. Even number seven seed, Barclay can beat the number one team, Manhattan. And that's not just saying any given day, any given Sunday, whatever. It is true. The Barclays team could beat Manhattan as the seventh seed facing. It's a one seed and they could beat them more time like maybe three times out of 10, four times out of 10. So it. Any team could win this conference. There's no.
[00:21:20] Speaker A: Sure.
[00:21:20] Speaker B: There's no automatic winner. The fact that there had to be a coin flip for the one seed really proves that as well, I think.
[00:21:27] Speaker A: I mean, our conference, our. Our region, the. Even the world. We're not the ncaa, but even the. The NCAA tournament.
[00:21:36] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:21:38] Speaker A: The idea of a 16 seed in. In a division and a one seed. It's never happened. Well, no, it did. Just. Just happened.
[00:21:46] Speaker B: Happened a couple years ago. A couple years ago, I think twice and. But no, once.
[00:21:49] Speaker A: Many times, I think. But many times. The idea is it. There's. It's an. It's just a grab bag in the, in the tournament these days. You can't pick a winner to go the whole way and it. This. It melt. The whole thing just kind of shifts down to our level as well.
It's just evenly mashed all through. There's lots of talent out there. People know how to play basketball and they're all over the place. So.
[00:22:16] Speaker B: And I mean, it's very much true. We talked about this last year, Matt and I. I think we did on the podcast of how it would be so fun if the N, double C, double A, the Christian version, transitioned from tournament style or like the individual regional tournaments to a March Madness 64.
[00:22:34] Speaker A: Whatever it is, I think it'll be 30, 32 teams probably.
[00:22:37] Speaker B: That'd be awesome. Yeah, that'd be so fun. And if they did do that, I do believe every single team in our conference would probably be in it. Actually, that's really tough to call because there's a lot of good teams down south. But I mean every team in a conference, in our conference and MCCC would have a good competitive. Yeah. Would have a good resume to make it into that tournament. So I am looking forward the men's tournament as well as the women's, but the men's is going to be super competitive just because it's really even across the board. Of course, Manhattan Ozark has a slight edge, both being ranked in the nation throughout the season here and there. I don't think the rest has cracked in there. Maybe Faith and Calvary a little bit.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Emas, I mean they're pretty much on the edge of being ranked in the top 10 all season. Had a long win streak and then was cut short on senior night, sadly against Ozark, a game that I think the men ran out of gas, which is what I mentioned earlier. I think if they can keep that, keep the pedal going and can finish a game, they're a team to watch out for. Now they do focus a lot in the three point game.
[00:23:45] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[00:23:47] Speaker B: Which isn't. But they're not a one dimensional team. They might look on, on paper it might seem like they're a one dimensional team, but the way they. We'll get into the highlights later here, but there's a lot of assists, a lot of passing, a lot of teamwork and they can drive into the paint. They have a lot of capable players that are able to get around any six foot guy.
[00:24:06] Speaker A: Yes. Yeah, it's, it's. They're, they're taking off of the Golden State offense style where you get down the court and you got a good shot, you let it fly and you know that's. It's a different style of basketball than I was used to and that's. And that's just the way it is. If you had the players that can do that, you do that. If you have players who need to slow it down and you have a big guy inside, you got to let him come up the court. He's slow, but you know, you get him the ball. But I think Art, we have speed. I mean all the players are almost interchangeable. It seems like you have the same size, the same speed and.
[00:24:47] Speaker B: Very true.
[00:24:48] Speaker A: I do, I do like watching them play. And they're not, they're not selfish players either. They come up there and they do their thing. So like I say, if they just play their game and they're on their game, they're going to do, they're going to be fine too. So it's just a matter of, you know the old saying, win by the three, die by the three.
[00:25:04] Speaker B: Yeah, careful with that. You know, we don't want that. We don't want that. I've had a lot of conversations with, with Matt on the podcast, off the podcast and the players and I think, I think that's a team that a lot of the, our, A lot of teams in our conference look at us as we live and die by a three. Because if we go into the game and we're hot and we're making, we have a great three point percentage, especially in the 40s, 40%. Oh yeah, we're winning that game. Yeah, we're winning that game. I mean most teams probably would for sure, but we can win the games in the 30% tile as well.
But a lot of the games that we aren't shooting that well, we're losing. But I think, I mean my point of view, and you know, maybe, maybe people will disagree, but for you listeners at home, my point of view is that our team can do more than that. And I've, we've seen flashes right now, of course they don't have that, you know, structured in their, their, their main game plan because we have a lot of shooters more than players that can drive through the hoop. But we do have a lot of players, players in Tatum, players, players in Nash etc and company that can drive, can get around a guy who's 6, 5 in the paint, make a basket. Physical, be physical, but they can do it well.
[00:26:15] Speaker A: And, and what I've noticed a lot of times, especially when they get down behind a little bit, coach calls timeout. I'm not sure what he's yelling at him, but I'm sure he's saying a few things. But when they get their, when they get their rebounding game going.
[00:26:30] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:26:30] Speaker A: Then they're, they're going to be fine.
[00:26:32] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:26:32] Speaker A: A lot of times they'll almost as if they just expect the ball to go in when the other team shoots. When we rebound, you know, and defense, offensive rebound, defensive rebound, that's when we're going on all cylinders, so.
[00:26:45] Speaker B: Oh, 100% and that's, that's tough for our men this year.
[00:26:49] Speaker A: But like you say, I yell at the TV a lot when they miss their free throw.
[00:26:53] Speaker B: Have you ever broken a tv?
[00:26:54] Speaker A: Oh, no, but I almost threw my iPad once. But I didn't do that.
[00:26:58] Speaker B: Are you're an iPad kid?
[00:27:00] Speaker A: Wherever I can find this, the game, that's where I'm at.
[00:27:03] Speaker B: Okay, but what were you going to say? You're almost.
[00:27:05] Speaker A: Well, I said, yeah, they, when they, the. They got to make their free throws. Especially tournament time. That's so important. Yeah. And you gotta, you gotta make your free throw.
[00:27:14] Speaker B: The basics. You sound like a coach.
[00:27:17] Speaker A: You know, that's where it comes from.
[00:27:19] Speaker B: I love it. Some player season highlights for this, I guess for highlights for the season, for the players, our men's team. Nash Harper.
[00:27:28] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:27:28] Speaker B: Number one. Number one in the nation in both assists per game and total assists.
[00:27:34] Speaker A: There you go, man.
[00:27:36] Speaker B: They passed that rock.
[00:27:37] Speaker A: That's right.
[00:27:37] Speaker B: Passing that rock.
[00:27:38] Speaker A: Get to the open, man.
[00:27:39] Speaker B: Is he applied mathematics?
[00:27:40] Speaker A: No, he's not. But, you know, he's a smart kid.
[00:27:43] Speaker B: I mean, maybe he would make more baskets if he was applied mathematics.
[00:27:45] Speaker A: Probably would, yeah. He probably be the leading scorer as well.
[00:27:49] Speaker B: Nash is going to like that.
Number six in the nation with assist to turnover ratio.
[00:27:56] Speaker A: That's. That's really important.
[00:27:58] Speaker B: Talk about it.
[00:27:59] Speaker A: No turnovers, lots of assists. That's just money in the bank. Right?
[00:28:04] Speaker B: Money in the bank, ladies and gentlemen. So look for that, look for that. Number 10 in the nation in rebounds per game and number 14 in the nation in total rebounds. Nash Harper, number 14 and total rebounds. Like this guy is not a four or five, someone that plays under the basket. Not at all. And he's getting, he's outboarding people.
[00:28:23] Speaker A: He gets to the, gets to the ball, find the ball.
[00:28:25] Speaker B: And that's what I'm talking about. That's why I don't think we're a team that lives and dies by a three. Or we shouldn't. We shouldn't be. Or we. There's other options because we see right there, because we play against a team that has, has a big. And they get those offensive boards, they're just going to keep putting up shots and give them more shots than us. And that's how you lose games.
[00:28:43] Speaker A: You got to get the. Got to get those defensive rebounds for sure.
[00:28:47] Speaker B: Tatum, number 15, number two, or I guess number two in the nation and points per game. There we go.
[00:28:55] Speaker A: It was a great addition.
[00:28:56] Speaker B: Number three in the nation in total points. Man, that's awesome. And number eight in the nation and three point field goal percentage.
[00:29:06] Speaker A: That's good.
[00:29:07] Speaker B: It's really good. Really good. Tatum, a player that can play everywhere.
Probably one of the more skilled players we've ever had here at Emmaus University.
You know, he Made his Bible college prior. But also just shout out to Nash Harper for his great season. Shout out to Tatum for his great season.
Thank you. Thank you for guys, for everything you guys have done.
Collar Wingfield, number 17 in the nation and field goal percentage. Wow. Collar has been a great addition this year. A lot of these guys, Tatum's first year, Collier's first year. Both Chiefs fans. Rest in peace. Sorry, guys.
I know, right? It's good. It's good.
[00:29:48] Speaker A: It's all right.
[00:29:49] Speaker B: It's good either way. Both have been so impactful on the court.
Health was a big thing at the beginning of the season for a lot of guys, even in the middle of the season. But the last couple weeks they've really been trying to take care of their bodies. Your wife, Mrs. Iverson, being the, the, the trainer on campus as well.
[00:30:10] Speaker A: I hear all the stories. She'll come home and tell me about all their little boo boos and I tell them to rub dirt on it and get out there and play.
[00:30:17] Speaker B: So yeah, there we go. Maybe they need that. Maybe a little tough love. Yeah, maybe Mrs. Iverson needs to start, you know, just slapping them. Be like, get in there.
[00:30:25] Speaker A: You're okay. Get out there.
[00:30:26] Speaker B: There we go. Number eight or for. For Josh. Josh Stewart, number eight in the nation and free throw percentage.
[00:30:34] Speaker A: Very good.
[00:30:34] Speaker B: Shout out Josh. Shout out Collier.
[00:30:36] Speaker A: Love those free throws.
[00:30:37] Speaker B: There we go. Josh also just a, a three point magnet. Gets hot.
[00:30:42] Speaker A: He gets hot.
[00:30:42] Speaker B: Oh, for sure. He's one of the reasons why we beat Faith. Keep feeding for that. I think it was a chaplain cup. Yeah, right, right. Coming off the bench. Number or William Shaw, number 22 in point field goal percentage. Really good.
[00:30:59] Speaker A: Good.
[00:31:00] Speaker B: Freshman first year student already having a. A really good or being ranked in the top 25 in the nation for percentage on the three. Awesome. Shout out to Will. Shout out to Josh. Shout out to all those guys and what you were able to do this season. And it really shows. It really shows for what you guys are able to do. Just some more there some more team highlights as a whole. 14 and 9 in the season. The best record in program history. Would you.
[00:31:30] Speaker A: Yeah, you know what? I have to admit, I did not keep track of all the stats.
[00:31:34] Speaker B: This is why we have issues, guys.
[00:31:36] Speaker A: We had a. Gosh, I, I was a head coach.
[00:31:39] Speaker B: Yeah. And you couldn't do everything and an.
[00:31:41] Speaker A: AD and a teacher, so you can't.
[00:31:43] Speaker B: Say anything against it. 14 and 9, that's a good record.
[00:31:46] Speaker A: Anytime you have a winning record, that's a good record.
[00:31:48] Speaker B: There we go. 1490 nation best record in Emmaus school program history. And we have the. The coach that can. That can, you know, say that. Right. So number three in the nation in scoring. They had a 84.3 points per game. Number 10 in the nation and field goal percentage at 45.
Number eight in the nation at three point percentage at 35%. There it is.
[00:32:16] Speaker A: Very good. If you're above 33, you're doing great.
[00:32:18] Speaker B: There it is. There it is. Number three. There's a lot of these. Number three in the nation. An opponent, three point percentage at 29%.
[00:32:25] Speaker A: Hey, if you hold them all, if you hold defense can win games, too. I love deep. That was always my thing. Loved. I love defense. So there's a certain guy, Landon. Oh, he's all over the floor.
[00:32:34] Speaker B: Jacobus.
[00:32:35] Speaker A: Oh, my goodness.
[00:32:36] Speaker B: Literally always on the floor because he's hustling.
[00:32:39] Speaker A: I love the defense hustle right there.
[00:32:41] Speaker B: Landon's your guy.
[00:32:42] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:32:42] Speaker B: Awesome. Number three in the nation and three point field goals per game at 10.2.
[00:32:50] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:32:51] Speaker B: Yep. Okay. I'm just looking for affirmation. Number six in the nation in assist per game at 16. That's really good.
[00:32:59] Speaker A: If you get a lot of assists for your scoring, that's great.
[00:33:02] Speaker B: I mean, you said earlier we are not a selfish team.
[00:33:03] Speaker A: Right.
[00:33:04] Speaker B: Not a selfish team. Trying to get that three. Those three point percentages up. Right. Number 10 in the nation in steals per game at nine.
[00:33:10] Speaker A: There's a defense.
[00:33:11] Speaker B: There it is. So we're top 10 in a lot in all of these categories. A lot of important categories you would say for. For a team in a tournament or I guess in the.
In the season. So, guys, it's gonna be. It's gonna be a hard road for them. Very competitive, all the teams, but I mean, pretty even across the board. But they make it past Central, then they'll get. Maybe hope more. More than likely have a rematch against Ozark and Ozark. I feel like they just ran out of gas.
[00:33:40] Speaker A: Well, Ozark is. They got a big post player.
[00:33:44] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:33:44] Speaker A: And they just got to learn how to. I mean, he. They started to feed him, I think, in that last game. But they. They like say if you. If you.
They need to get a lead against them.
[00:33:54] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:33:55] Speaker A: And then make Ozark play catch up, then they can't feed that guy over and over again. So that's kind of the idea I think you got to do against them.
[00:34:02] Speaker B: But they can beat them.
[00:34:03] Speaker A: They can beat him.
[00:34:04] Speaker B: Exactly. And I think our guys are going into this game hungry.
[00:34:07] Speaker A: Sure.
[00:34:07] Speaker B: And angry, especially at some of these topper top teams or the teams that have being us knowing that we have a team. Sure we have the numbers that have have proved that we're a team that to be reckoned with. We have a team to watch out for in the tournament.
