[00:00:00] Speaker A: But let's talk about MCC a little bit. [00:00:01] Speaker B: People. [00:00:02] Speaker A: People are a little curious on, like, where we stand division wise and, like. [00:00:05] Speaker B: Okay. [00:00:06] Speaker A: I thought we were, like, division three. I thought we were NCAA or NCAA. What is NCC? So many c's. Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the official Emmaus athletic podcast in the nest. I'm your Shane Douglas, here with Matthew Thomlison. Matt, what's so funny? You laughing? You like that? [00:00:32] Speaker C: It was good. No, you're just laughing. [00:00:35] Speaker B: Cool. [00:00:35] Speaker A: Well, I got to show Matt this. [00:00:38] Speaker C: I'm wearing for the first time in the Nest podcast history, Shane is wearing an Emmaus shirt. [00:00:44] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:00:45] Speaker A: There we go. So be happy. [00:00:47] Speaker C: I'm very happy. [00:00:47] Speaker A: I showed him right before we recorded, and it was a priceless reaction. It was incredible. [00:00:52] Speaker C: Yeah, it was. [00:00:53] Speaker A: Man, I should have waited. I should have surprised you more. Darn it. I guess we got to go longer with that. Maybe have another board up here of, like, how many times has Shane ware Emmaus merch never clothing on the podcast? Well, that's the thing, is you're athletics. You're the assistant men's basketball coach, so you automatically have more merch to wear. They give me polos. [00:01:17] Speaker C: I got half the shirts I wear from when we were students. [00:01:20] Speaker A: I know I get the t shirts, but, like, the same early years of work. This is like, nice stuff, though. You got nice stuff, right? [00:01:26] Speaker C: Thank you to our wonderful donors out there that have donated so graciously to our, especially our athletics program. Donate to admission, donate to enrollment, donor funded. [00:01:35] Speaker A: We want that either way. We would just want to thank you, everyone, for making us be a part of your day. If it's in the morning, afternoon, or evening, if it's with your family, Thursday or whatever day. Yeah. If it's with your family or just at your work desk or on a car ride home or to work. Thank you for giving us that listen, giving us those views, and we appreciate your time on putting in here and the time that we put in to try to give you some good content. So again, thank you, everybody. We love you guys. We appreciate your feedback and your love and support. [00:02:04] Speaker C: The funny thing is, this episode will come out probably during our game tomorrow. [00:02:10] Speaker A: A little bit before. [00:02:11] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:02:11] Speaker A: So as you're watching this, know that you either know the results already unless you watch like. [00:02:16] Speaker C: So finish watching this and then turn our game on, please. [00:02:20] Speaker A: How would they watch the game? [00:02:21] Speaker C: They'll go to faith Baptist bible College's YouTube page. [00:02:24] Speaker B: There we go. [00:02:24] Speaker C: Or go to emmaus athletics, facebook, instagram, twitter, and follow the link to the. [00:02:30] Speaker A: Video so you're good at plugging that stuff. You got to plug it more at the end. I'm going to have you do it this time. [00:02:34] Speaker C: Plug. [00:02:35] Speaker A: With that said, in today's podcast, we're going to recap some of the games from the last week, as well as the upcoming I don't want to. Games this week. I don't either. [00:02:45] Speaker C: And then a fun topic that we're going to talk about, the history of the Midwest Christian college conference that we're a part of, that is their tournament that we're participating in this week. [00:02:53] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:02:54] Speaker A: So that's exactly the point. So to talk about the tournament that we will be going into actually today, Thursday, today, as this episode in 1. [00:03:06] Speaker C: Hour and 58 minutes. [00:03:08] Speaker A: According to 09:00. [00:03:09] Speaker C: According to 09:00. [00:03:10] Speaker A: Let's not get confused about the timing because we record on Wednesdays. We've talked about this. But moving on, let's talk about if we had a sentence, a word, a phrase for the last week of emmaus athletics, specifically to men's and women's basketball, or even more specific to men's basketball, how would you. You said a phrase, a phrase, a word, a saying. How would you just plain and simple. [00:03:36] Speaker C: Yeah, I'm just here so I don't get fined. [00:03:38] Speaker A: Oh, really? Wow. I would say, my phrase is. I like this. My phrase is heartbreak. [00:03:45] Speaker C: My phrase, heartbreak is complete heartbreak. Gassed. [00:03:48] Speaker A: Gassed. [00:03:48] Speaker B: Okay. [00:03:49] Speaker A: I love the different insights we hear. Me, as a fan who either watches the live stream in person, you, as a coach who gets everything, you see it as like effort, being in shape. Gassed. I see it as. Man, so close. [00:04:05] Speaker C: I see that, too. [00:04:06] Speaker A: Heartbroken. [00:04:06] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:04:06] Speaker C: I'm being politically correct. [00:04:08] Speaker A: No, that's fine. [00:04:09] Speaker C: And I get to be. [00:04:10] Speaker A: I get it. [00:04:11] Speaker B: Right. [00:04:12] Speaker A: So tell us about it, Matt. Tell us about it. [00:04:14] Speaker B: Yes. [00:04:14] Speaker C: So there's three games that we're recapping. Two men's basketball, one women's basketball. Man, tough week. [00:04:21] Speaker A: It was tough week. [00:04:22] Speaker C: It was a really tough Thursday. [00:04:24] Speaker A: Let's get serious. Turn down the lights a little bit. [00:04:26] Speaker C: So we could go. We played Marinatha. So rematch from earlier in the season, home game. Their best player was hurt. So they had two of their top players were out, or one of their top players, and one of their rotation players was out, and then one of our starters and then one rotation player and another player out. So really, it's hard this deep into the semester or the year. It really comes down to what team is the deepest and who's the healthiest. So we had two banged up teams playing each other. We should have won the game. We were up twelve. [00:04:58] Speaker A: Well, you just spoiled it for everyone. [00:05:00] Speaker C: Well, everyone knows because hopefully they watch. [00:05:02] Speaker A: And look at, if they watch this, they know. If they watch this, they should know. [00:05:06] Speaker C: But we were ahead of the game. [00:05:09] Speaker B: Gosh. [00:05:09] Speaker C: For 39 minutes and 58 seconds. [00:05:13] Speaker A: Wait, what? [00:05:14] Speaker C: We had the lead for 39 minutes and 58 seconds out of how many total? 40 minutes. Marinatha took the lead with actually it might have been like less, but it was like under 10 seconds they had the lead for. And that was at the end of the game because it really came down to we've really been a one half team as of late. We shoot the ball. We shot the ball so incredibly well, like all three games that we played. [00:05:49] Speaker A: Especially what Tyler was killing at first half against Marine. [00:05:53] Speaker C: But then second half rolls around and it just comes down to, we keep saying you have to play to win. You can't play not to lose. And when there's that pressure on it because we're a really good team when there's no pressure, but once pressure gets applied to us, then it's like, yeah, it's really tough. [00:06:12] Speaker A: Do you feel like, and obviously we're not trying to put anyone down or anything, but do you feel like a lot of the guys either get tunnel visioned on the team where it's like they either want to be at the. [00:06:25] Speaker C: First half of our last three games compared to the second half, it is that the ball movement is so fluid in the first half and then the second half rolls around and it stops. Movement stops, ball movement stops. [00:06:35] Speaker A: Do you think that's because they're scared? Do you think it's because they're self. [00:06:38] Speaker C: I mean, it could be a combination of being scared and being tired because we really have only really had like eight, seven guys healthy this past couple of weekend. That takes a toll when starter or heavy minutes players are out and so then other guys are filling it in or the starters that play a lot or have to play even more. I think Nash played like 38 minutes both games this week because all the weight was on his shoulders and that's really hard. And so, yeah, it was super frustrating and just sad. But at the same time, when you're on the other side of it, how exciting is it? But the one positive thing with that is we'll play them again next Thursday. Hey, we'll play Marineath again in the regional tournament next Thursday. [00:07:25] Speaker A: We don't need to talk about that quite that. [00:07:27] Speaker C: So we will get another shot at them and we should win. [00:07:32] Speaker A: And that one player is still out, correct? [00:07:34] Speaker C: Yes, he's still out. And then moving on. So Saturday we traveled down to Mowbury, Missouri, to play central Christian College of the Bible. Girls had previously beat them at home. We had lost, I think, nine, but it's always a tough environment down there. There's so often where you just don't shoot well down there. I have experience in that. But girls, they end up losing by 16, which was unfortunate, but it all comes down to. Which has been kind of, like I said, the Achilles heel of both of our seasons, for both of our teams this season has been just scoring the. [00:08:10] Speaker A: Basketball, and that's very important. [00:08:13] Speaker C: And you have to score more than the other team. [00:08:16] Speaker A: That's like the. [00:08:17] Speaker C: That was fortunate for them. And then our game, we were up 19 in the first half, and we lost by one. [00:08:26] Speaker A: I know, I saw that. [00:08:30] Speaker C: It's one of those games where it's just such a good reminder of like, okay, that sucks, but where is our identity? Is it in this 19 point? I guess technically it was a 20 point swing where we have 19 lost by one. But it's like, no, that is not what defines us. That's not who defines us. Christ. God is who defines us. [00:08:53] Speaker B: Amen. [00:08:53] Speaker C: But also, you have to take away all the issues that we really have had, have been things that can be fixed. And it just comes down to the moment of, do you want it or not? And you could do this over and over and over and over and over again. And if you don't learn and in a sense, grow up or move on, it's nothing. But if you can take that and be like, hey, that was awful. I hated that. I don't want that to ever happen again. What must I do now in order for that not to happen? Then that's when you really see the growth in moving on from those, but also responding well and not pouting for the next three games or the next practices. And so it was a very unfortunate week. But there are a lot of really good life lessons. [00:09:39] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. [00:09:40] Speaker C: That we learned. And that's the thing, too. You have to constantly self reflect wins and losses. I think people, naturally, you do that when times are tough, when you're losing, but you really need to do that when you're winning. But especially when you're losing, you need to have your mind the right way. [00:10:00] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:10:00] Speaker C: And that's been so important, and that's. [00:10:03] Speaker A: Great encouragement for young athletes out there. And the thing is, not everyone's going to become a professional athlete, but to. [00:10:09] Speaker C: Obviously take what you percentage is. [00:10:13] Speaker A: But take what you just said there as encouragement moving forward and knowing that what you. Very similar to what we talked about last week on the podcast, but taking it and learning and growing from your mistakes, from wins, from losses, and applying that into your life off the court, off the field. But, yeah, I got to keep your heads up from the men's and women's teams here at Emmaus for a rough week. [00:10:34] Speaker B: It's tough. [00:10:34] Speaker A: Last week, Ken, talk a little bit more about when it comes, and it doesn't have to be specific to the CCCB game or the. Wait, what do they say about CCCB? What do they call themselves? [00:10:46] Speaker C: Tracy B. Tracy B. Tracy B. [00:10:48] Speaker A: Okay, so does it have to be specific to the Tracy B. Game or the Marinatha game when it came down to the finals of menace and, like, drawing stuff up? But what is the thought process of if you're down two, if you're down one? Because we were down one against Marinatha and you guys threw up a three point play. Correct. [00:11:04] Speaker C: Two point play. [00:11:05] Speaker A: Was it two point? So it was Tyler within? [00:11:07] Speaker C: Well, it was the option of what was open. That's the biggest thing is in those game ten situations, you have to have a backup plan and a main plan. So if the main plan is covered, you have the backup plan, backup plan, blah, blah, blah. [00:11:20] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:11:21] Speaker A: So, for myself and a lot of people who aren't in those huddles, especially at this collegiate level, walk us through. What's the thought? Is it the coach? Do you and Parker and Dylan have a plan before the game starts? During the game, kind of. [00:11:34] Speaker C: A lot of it comes down to the flow of the game. We talked about the Super bowl. What Mahomes said, that if the 49 ers had scored a touchdown, they would have gone for two, just because of analytics. And I think a lot of it comes down to that. Like, if we're shooting the ball really well from three, sure, we'll go for the win with a three. But if there's a mismatch or someone that's been really taking advantage of who's been guarding them, then we'll look at that. We'll try to get that switch into that, because I think a lot of that game was we were trying to find the matchups into setting screens to causing switches to get guys isolated or a bigger guy on a guard and then attack from there. And so that was really kind of like the drop of the last play, was trying to get a ball screen coming around or an off ball screen coming around with the ball getting lobbed. Over to the post, who would then toss it out to our guard, who was coming around the left side and then had the option to attack or shoot the three, but the Pass didn't get there, unfortunately. [00:12:32] Speaker A: So you're just kind of taking it based off the flow. [00:12:35] Speaker C: But I must say, nash almost hit that half court shot. That would have sent the game to overtime. [00:12:40] Speaker A: That would have been wild. [00:12:40] Speaker C: I mean, the ball hit the backboard and then hit the front of the rim and then went out. You had such a good look at that. We can't forget about that, honestly. [00:12:51] Speaker A: I did forget about it. [00:12:52] Speaker C: I did. [00:12:53] Speaker A: That's a good point of like, I mean, even if that play didn't get run up, you still had that opportunity. [00:12:58] Speaker C: With Nash and he literally almost hit it, which would have been crazy. [00:13:01] Speaker A: That would have been awesome. That would have been wild. [00:13:03] Speaker C: That would have been wild. [00:13:04] Speaker A: Dang. Okay, so just seeing the flow of the game and then adapting based off of that and trying to find as best mismatch or even hot hand on your team. [00:13:12] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:13:12] Speaker A: Drawing obviously for them because they have. [00:13:14] Speaker C: A six eight guy that's in the middle. Like, you're not going to attack the basket. You might do a pull up or a floater or more likely you do a three. But yeah, it just kind of depends on what's going on. [00:13:24] Speaker A: And then do the players have a voice in it? Do they say, give it me? Like, if someone was like, give me the ball, coach, are you going to be like, sit down. [00:13:32] Speaker C: You can say whatever you want, but I mean, obviously the ultimate decision is them trusting us and I'm trusting them. So honestly, yeah. It comes down to what is the best option and if someone is feeling it like, hey, maybe we'll go that way or whatever. [00:13:46] Speaker A: Have you ever had a player who was like, maybe that you drew something up for them or they were part of the play and they're like, don't include me. I don't want it? [00:13:54] Speaker C: That did happen one time. [00:13:55] Speaker A: Really? Did it end up well or. [00:13:59] Speaker C: I think we was a final result? I don't remember because I remember as a coach or as a player, it was as a player. But we did have one time where it was like, we drew a play for someone, this was a few years ago, and it was like, no, don't drove the play for me because they're going to guard me a certain way where they're going to double me and this guy's going to be open. [00:14:15] Speaker B: Okay. [00:14:16] Speaker C: I thought it was more like, don't give me the ball, sub me out please. I'm going to lock you. [00:14:21] Speaker B: Okay. [00:14:22] Speaker A: Because I feel like basketball. [00:14:23] Speaker C: That's like movie esque right there. [00:14:24] Speaker B: It is. [00:14:25] Speaker A: I feel like basketball. You have to have something within your genes to be playing with confidence. That's it. It's a confident game. Like, if you aren't playing with confidence, you're not making the game. You're not playing well in the game. Because I think of so many people who came through Emmaus or even just knowing back in high school that in. [00:14:44] Speaker C: Practice, dogs, killers, and the game. The game. The lights are too bright and you're in the headlights. [00:14:50] Speaker A: Yeah, it doesn't even matter. It's the first shot of the game. It's too nervous. [00:14:56] Speaker C: I think it really comes down to mindset, too, because obviously your mindset's great if you make it, but if you don't make it, how are you going to respond? Exactly, because I think we missed a shot. A game winner against Moody, the one against Marinatha. We missed a couple game winners this year. We've had opportunities to do that throughout the years. I had a chance to win a game one year, but I missed it. And so it just comes. [00:15:20] Speaker A: Have you ever made one? [00:15:21] Speaker C: A game winner? [00:15:22] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:15:23] Speaker C: No, I know. Sad. [00:15:25] Speaker A: Sorry to make you relive this. [00:15:28] Speaker C: There was one game my senior year where I had free throws. That sealed it. But as far as the game, I mean, okay, this is super off topic, but this would have been my junior year. Or was it senior year? No, it was junior. [00:15:41] Speaker A: You get confused. [00:15:42] Speaker C: So it was your freshman year. Dude, the years all run together. So it was your freshman year. Yeah, that season we had. I think it was like five game winners because Angelo hit a game winner. Caleb postman hit a game winner against Ozark when we were down 20 and he hit a three at the buzzer. Nathan Davidson had a putback at the buzzer. [00:16:00] Speaker A: Against Angeles was a putback. [00:16:01] Speaker C: Tracy B. Angeles was a putback against Moody. Stevie Horn hit a game winner against Calvary. [00:16:07] Speaker A: We rushed the court after the moody game. [00:16:08] Speaker C: We did rush the court after the moody game. That was awesome. [00:16:11] Speaker A: Are you just saying all those? [00:16:13] Speaker C: Yeah. We've had winners in the past and. [00:16:17] Speaker A: It'S been the opposite this year in a way. [00:16:18] Speaker C: Yeah, kind of been the opposite of. [00:16:21] Speaker A: I saw the final result and I watched a little bit of the game against Tracy B. But you lost by one. We lost by one. Was it them or was it us or just no gameplay? [00:16:32] Speaker C: As far as what? [00:16:33] Speaker A: As far as, like the final seconds of the game. [00:16:35] Speaker C: Oh, Tyler hit a three at the buzzer to go from four to one. [00:16:38] Speaker B: Okay. Yeah. [00:16:40] Speaker C: Because we had a chance within. We were down two, so they fouled them down, and then we missed the shot and then they got it made both free throws and we drilled down and hit a three to take it within one. [00:16:48] Speaker B: Okay. [00:16:48] Speaker C: So it was like one of those things where this would have been on the bad beats episode on sports center because the plus minus or. [00:16:56] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. [00:16:56] Speaker C: At the end of the. [00:17:02] Speaker A: So, I mean, I feel like our Emmaus men's team, specifically, is set up for maybe a game winner or two in the next couple of weeks. [00:17:12] Speaker C: You never know. [00:17:12] Speaker A: That'd be awesome. [00:17:13] Speaker C: Tournament time. Anything can happen, honestly. [00:17:15] Speaker A: So moving tournament play. We're in the MCC tournament. [00:17:19] Speaker C: Yes. This weekend in Ankeny, Iowa. [00:17:22] Speaker A: Leaving Wednesday. [00:17:24] Speaker C: We're already on the road, so I'm. [00:17:25] Speaker A: Not here like we talked about. So the game is Thursday at 11:00 a.m. Against Ozark. Ozark. [00:17:32] Speaker C: Ozark. So we're the seven seed. So we're the bottom seed playing the two seed. We play winner, loser of Central and Calvary. [00:17:41] Speaker A: Now, walk our audience through Ozark as a team and just quickly. And our record against them this year, as well as the gameplay. [00:17:50] Speaker C: Yeah, so we've lost both games against Ozark. About 20 point games. Both of them. They're number two seed, so threats a good team. They're missing two of their better players. [00:17:59] Speaker B: Really? Yeah. [00:18:00] Speaker C: But they're a very well coached. Yeah, they're nine and three in the conference this year, so that's really impressive. So it's going to be a dog fight. But who else beat them? [00:18:12] Speaker A: Because Manhattan beat them twice? [00:18:13] Speaker C: Central or Calvert? No, Central beat them. And then Aaron. Manhattan beat them twice. [00:18:20] Speaker A: So we got tough opponent either way. Just moving on. Always be playing. [00:18:26] Speaker C: So win, lose. We'll play sometime on Friday. [00:18:29] Speaker A: Okay, awesome. [00:18:30] Speaker C: And then the girls play at five today they play the host team, Faith, who they split with this year. [00:18:37] Speaker B: Okay, cool. [00:18:39] Speaker A: That's going to be a very interesting game. It's always great when we can play faith three times. [00:18:43] Speaker C: I know, right. [00:18:44] Speaker A: In a season, it's always like. [00:18:45] Speaker C: Because they say it's always hard to beat a team three times when you lose. But it's like when you split one on one, it's like, okay, no holds bar and anything can happen. [00:18:52] Speaker A: And the thing is, you play not everyone, but you play someone, you'll play. [00:18:56] Speaker C: Someone a third time. [00:18:57] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:18:57] Speaker A: And I feel like when it comes to faith, more than any of the other schools at MCC, you might play. [00:19:02] Speaker C: Two people, three to. [00:19:07] Speaker A: Like. If we had divisions. It's like if the Cowboys played the Eagles in the. [00:19:14] Speaker C: Division game. Yeah. [00:19:15] Speaker A: Inner division, like faith is our division. It's just us, too. That's how we feel. [00:19:18] Speaker C: And it's nice that the region's all different this year because sometimes you might play a team a fourth time. [00:19:22] Speaker A: Hey, fair enough. [00:19:22] Speaker C: Which we did, actually, the year that we won regionals. We played faith four times that year. [00:19:27] Speaker A: That's wild. [00:19:27] Speaker C: We lost both games in the regular season, won both games in the postseason. [00:19:31] Speaker B: Okay. Yeah. [00:19:32] Speaker A: I take that any day. [00:19:34] Speaker C: Any day in the regular season. Two. [00:19:37] Speaker B: Nice. [00:19:38] Speaker A: That is nice. Okay, so tournament play. So looking forward to this weekend. Got a bunch of games. Women's. [00:19:46] Speaker C: A lot of weird hour games. [00:19:47] Speaker A: Yeah. Women's favorite. Who's the women's favorite to win? [00:19:50] Speaker C: Well, Ozark is the one seed. [00:19:52] Speaker B: Okay. [00:19:52] Speaker C: For women, and Manhattan is the one seed for men. [00:19:54] Speaker A: So how far away is Ozark from the rest of the competition? Is there a gap? [00:19:58] Speaker C: I mean, there have been some close games, but they're really good. And they've won the last two years, I think. [00:20:04] Speaker A: Okay, crazy. [00:20:05] Speaker C: Or three years. Three years. [00:20:06] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:20:06] Speaker A: Manhattan, though. What about them for men's? [00:20:09] Speaker C: Okay, so their seniors have lost like three conference games in four. [00:20:17] Speaker A: Let's, let's. Let's take them down. [00:20:19] Speaker C: Yep. So they're the one seed. So they have the buy into the semifinals and they play the winner of Barclay and faith. [00:20:26] Speaker B: Okay. [00:20:27] Speaker C: Yep. Well, hope to see them in hope. [00:20:30] Speaker A: The Cinderella story, baby. [00:20:32] Speaker B: Let's go. [00:20:33] Speaker A: I'm all for it. I'm all for the march. [00:20:35] Speaker C: The regional year was Cinderella story. [00:20:36] Speaker A: So it was true. I'm all for the March madness, for the NACA. I don't think it would work out for MCc, but let's talk about Mcc a little bit. People are a little curious on where we stand division wise and. Okay, I thought we were like division three. I thought we were NCAA or NA. What is MCc? So many c's. [00:20:59] Speaker C: There's lots and lots and lots of. [00:21:01] Speaker A: Can you explain? [00:21:02] Speaker B: What are you looking at? Yes. [00:21:03] Speaker C: So if you can see that the two down here is the NCAA. So the National Christian College Athletic association. [00:21:08] Speaker A: Which associates how many schools? [00:21:11] Speaker C: About 100. About 100 schools. There's two levels. There's division one and there's division two. We're in division two. So a lot of division one teams are also dual affiliated in NAIA. [00:21:21] Speaker A: So what are some well known division two teams? [00:21:23] Speaker C: You got Bob Jones d. It's kind of get confusing because you're like, okay, explain. [00:21:32] Speaker B: Yes. [00:21:33] Speaker C: Like Bob Jones, Pensacola Crown College, Tacoa Falls, Manhattan is Judson d one? Judson is d one. Okay, so like a Cedarville or Judson or Grace college liberty used to be. [00:21:48] Speaker A: D one and then they moved to. [00:21:49] Speaker C: Or actual d one? [00:21:50] Speaker A: Actual d one. [00:21:52] Speaker B: Potential. [00:21:52] Speaker A: So a lot of the people who are in the NCAA, the bottom na d two are also division three in the NCAA. Right. So you got the christian version d two. The non christian version for Christian d three. So we play a lot of d three schools because we are around the same level. [00:22:11] Speaker C: So it really comes down to scholarship money. So d one in the NACA can do athletic scholarships. [00:22:18] Speaker B: Yes. [00:22:19] Speaker C: D two does not do athletic scholarships. [00:22:21] Speaker A: And a lot of the d one schools are usually NaI. Yes, in a christian christian version. But have you seen any of them be like ncAa d as well? [00:22:32] Speaker C: No, that's not allowed. I don't think there's anyone that's d two because they would destroy everyone because it's a higher level. I do think there are. [00:22:42] Speaker A: Destroy who? [00:22:43] Speaker C: D two would destroy any in some sense I do. But there are a few d three teams that are in d one, which is interesting. Yeah, it's just like. You're like, what's going on? But yeah, it's a lot. It is a lot going on. [00:22:56] Speaker A: So we are associated with the NCAA. [00:22:59] Speaker C: Which is our umbrella, but then we're also in the MCCCC. So the midwestern Christian College conference, which has seven schools right now, and all seven of those schools are a part of the MCA, which. [00:23:14] Speaker A: The schools that founded this conference. The first schools to enter was Manhattan Christian College. Calvary Christian College. Who else was it? [00:23:23] Speaker C: CBCCB. And then Covenant College. And they were located in St. Louis. [00:23:26] Speaker B: Yes. [00:23:27] Speaker A: And then Covenant College moved to Georgia. We still have three of the four remaining. [00:23:32] Speaker C: Three of the founders. [00:23:33] Speaker A: Three of the founders still remaining. [00:23:35] Speaker C: We've added two, is when it started. And so there are currently seven. There have been 13 total members. [00:23:41] Speaker B: Yes. [00:23:41] Speaker C: So right now, as it stands, there's Barclay College, there's Manhattan College Christian College. Excuse me, there's Calvary University. There's central Christian College of the Bible. There's faith Baptist Bible College, there's Emma's Bible college and there's Ozark Christian College. [00:23:55] Speaker B: Yes. [00:23:55] Speaker C: So those are the seven teams. Eight or eight. Seven teams. Because there's St. Louis isn't the team anymore. There's seven teams in Kansas, Missouri and Iowa. But there have been a total of 13 teams throughout the years. There was St. Louis Christian, there was central Bible College, which is now Evangel University, and then there was covenant College, obviously, grace University, Nebraska Christian. And so covenant left when they moved, Evangel left when they jumped up a level, because I believe they're now. Yeah, but then the other four, they closed, and then that's when they. [00:24:37] Speaker A: Yeah, so that's some history of MCCc. And we wanted to kind of talk to you a little bit about what MCCc is, the standards of it, and. [00:24:45] Speaker C: Kind of talking about their statement. [00:24:47] Speaker A: Yeah, so talk about the statement. [00:24:48] Speaker C: Yeah, so this is the, you know, what they look for in colleges that represent them? The underlying and sustaining philosophy of the Midwest Christian College Conference is commitment to the development and demonstration of Christ likeness through athletic participation and competition within the context of Bible colleges whose mission include the preparation of students for christian leadership. Recognizing that biblical truth is fundamental to all of life, the conference seeks to investigate biblical principles into athletic programs. Athletic participation is seen as an integral demonstration of the member college's total education program and is intended to enhance the education of the whole person, physical, spiritual, intellectual, emotional and social. That's a lot. The conference challenges each member, so each school of the athletic community, to see himself or herself, both on and off the court or field, as an ambassador of Jesus Christ. And the college represented as Christ's ambassadors. Qualities such as integrity, self control, respect, fairness, kindness and consideration toward opponents, teammates, coaches, officials and fans. [00:26:06] Speaker B: Blah, blah, blah, blah. [00:26:07] Speaker C: The conference is dedicated to the highest ideals of athletic competition, sportsmanship. [00:26:11] Speaker A: Sounds like you're about to like you're just reading this before the game and then they're about to sing a national anthem either way. So they're pretty picky. They really want good fellowship. They want a good community within here, which we love, we appreciate, which is exactly where we stand as well. And we talk about these teams, these schools that have left, either because of them dying or moving on. And honestly, there's a lot of teams that have moved on or even have tried to join the MCC in the past and haven't been let in because they do not fit these standards of christian character. And, I mean, what do you have all those things that they want to enhance? [00:26:48] Speaker B: Yes. [00:26:49] Speaker C: So, like, 2014 was my freshman year at Emmaus, which was our probation year, because we were still part of the ACCA, but we wanted to join the MCC, and so we were put on probation because we were treated as a conference member. We played games as if we were in the conference, but with the understanding that if we did things that other teams didn't like or we didn't show any of these things, then we wouldn't have been accepted. And so we were accepted the next year. So 2014 was our first year. 2015 was our official year. [00:27:23] Speaker B: Yes. [00:27:24] Speaker C: There have been some schools that have asked to join and have gone through that year and have been turned away because they did not fit the ideals of what the MCCC wants to. [00:27:34] Speaker A: You mentioned what was our conference before? [00:27:39] Speaker C: It was like, I don't know. There was an old conference way back in the day when Justin Smith played and was the ad. It was like the national Bible College, the NHBC or something like that. That was way back in the day. [00:27:53] Speaker A: Are they still alive or. [00:27:54] Speaker C: No, I don't think so. No. [00:27:55] Speaker A: So a lot of them had just kind of been merged. [00:27:58] Speaker C: Merged with things. [00:27:59] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:27:59] Speaker A: Other bigger conferences like NACA, which is growing because this conference is growing so fast. [00:28:04] Speaker C: Grown a lot, kind of absorbed a lot of what has happened. [00:28:07] Speaker A: Super nice. I love to see them grow, but for NCC, very casual, very laid back. [00:28:13] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:28:14] Speaker C: Kind of looking at the years that, I mean, you think about it. So 1962 was the first year they had men's basketball, which was the year they founded. So that was the first sport. 1977 is when they added volleyball as an official conference sport. 1989 was women's basketball, and a year after, and then 1990 was soccer. [00:28:30] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:28:31] Speaker C: And so it's interesting because obviously we had all three sports. We had club soccer and we had club volleyball for years, but it was never an official sport until we joined the NAA. [00:28:43] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:28:43] Speaker A: And it's really cool to see the schools that our current schools on here, because when talking to students or just knowing good christian schools out there, I can trust a lot of these schools and the biblical teaching and the principles that these institutions fall on. Right. And everything. What's really cool is that all these schools really have their thing that goes with it. We know, like Emmaus having our thing of the double major, as well as. [00:29:10] Speaker C: The Bible being emphasized, being confessional in. [00:29:14] Speaker A: Our acceptance, because, I mean, the lowest credit you will get with Bible is 31 credits required credits. And that's with business. Every other major is 40 plus. So we emphasize the Bible here. [00:29:26] Speaker B: Right. [00:29:26] Speaker A: And this isn't a pitch towards Emmaus, but it's really cool that we have a lot of these schools that are very similar in ideology of teaching the Bible and everything. And we see that on the field with a lot of sportsmanship, too. [00:29:36] Speaker C: Yeah, we always talk about, like. Yeah, we have talked about this in previous episodes of schools that we associate well with or we play well against, because we know where they're at, they know where we are at, and we get to enjoy, as we say, we get a worship together. [00:29:52] Speaker A: It's true. [00:29:53] Speaker C: Out on the field, I remember for. [00:29:54] Speaker A: Soccer, we would team up, we would meet up with Calvary before we play them, before we play them, and we would just have worship in the mornings. They would meet us at our hotels. We'd go to outside or around the swimming pool, hot tub, and just praise the Lord together. [00:30:07] Speaker C: And the best thing is you can do that and still be competitive and still love one another. [00:30:11] Speaker A: Because it's, at the end of the day, it's like the result of the matches and what matters. [00:30:16] Speaker C: You have an EMEA shirt, I have whatever school shirt it is. We play 90 minutes, 40 minutes, five matches, whatever it may be, and then it's over. And then we're still on the same team because we're brothers and sisters in Christ. [00:30:29] Speaker A: So remembering that each day, no matter who you're playing against, when it comes to christian athletics, or even just being a christian athletics, it doesn't really matter the result of the game, of course. You want to win. You want to be successful in that area. You want to put your best foot forward, but glorifying and honoring our Lord on the field and off the field. [00:30:47] Speaker C: Because I think of, like, last year when we played Grunnell in that game, after the game, one of their players, who was a Christian, came over and said, hey, man, I know you guys pray after game. Can we pray together? It was just us and him, even. [00:31:00] Speaker A: Though he just put up like 20, right. [00:31:01] Speaker C: But it was just so cool to see that, because like you said, wherever you are as a christian athlete, it's different whether or not your school is a christian school, a secular school, a pirate school, a public school, it doesn't matter. We stand, we represent Christ. [00:31:16] Speaker A: We stand out. And you see it everywhere. [00:31:17] Speaker C: We should stand out, and we do stand out. [00:31:19] Speaker B: True. Yes. [00:31:20] Speaker A: But some other cool history of this. What's really cool, we love NCCC. I'm going to start saying that. So shout out to NCC and everybody who's a part of it and has been a part of it from the beginning and continue to be a part of this conference. We got to update that website, man. I'm sorry. I'm not trying to throw hate out there, but oh, my goodness. Let's keep track of the stats. Let's keep track of the history. They've done a decent job with basketball. So we have the basketball history of all the teams that have been up. [00:31:49] Speaker C: Until, like a few years ago. [00:31:51] Speaker B: Yeah, sure. [00:31:51] Speaker A: They stopped in 2018. Goodness gracious. So we had to track down some stuff, but Emmaus. We are the babies. That's the thing. You guys got to look. [00:31:58] Speaker C: We are the newest member of the conference. [00:32:00] Speaker A: The newest member of the conference. [00:32:01] Speaker C: So you think about it, three schools have been in the conference since 1962. [00:32:05] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:32:06] Speaker C: And we've been in the conference for this is our, what, 9th year going on ten years this upcoming season. [00:32:11] Speaker A: And the thing is, we've had ups and downs, but through it all, we're still growing. We're growing our athletics. You've heard us talk about this is our athletics has been growing a lot within the last year and a half. Finally having, like, a full athletic staff that is committed and all like minded. [00:32:28] Speaker C: So exciting. [00:32:29] Speaker A: But with that said, we don't have a much. We don't have much when it comes to our awards. Volleyball has done really well. How many conference championships do we have? [00:32:36] Speaker C: Volleyball has won two conference championships. Women's basketball has won four, and men's soccer has won one. [00:32:42] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:32:42] Speaker A: And then our men's basketball team has won one regular, regular season champion. [00:32:46] Speaker C: Not a tournament. [00:32:47] Speaker A: Not a tournament. [00:32:47] Speaker C: Won seven total tournament champions. [00:32:50] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:32:51] Speaker A: So within that, a lot of them have also won tournament. So within that as well, the volleyball team has won regular champions a couple of times. [00:33:00] Speaker C: Volleyball, everyone has won a regular season. [00:33:03] Speaker A: Championship, but still waiting for that basketball. Come on, man. This year is the year. Maybe, I don't know. But what's really cool and what I noticed is Grace Christian out in Omaha. [00:33:16] Speaker C: Rest in peace. [00:33:17] Speaker A: Yeah. Died a couple of years ago. A lot of it was money, obviously, money situation, but just growing too much. [00:33:24] Speaker C: They grew too much. They added too many things. [00:33:28] Speaker A: They were good schools. They had good core values, but just brought in too many athletics. [00:33:32] Speaker C: I would say prior to them leaving, Grace and Emmaus were very similar. [00:33:40] Speaker A: And that's why they have that scholarship. [00:33:41] Speaker C: Yeah, because we do have a grace alumni scholarship for students that graduate from Grace. The parents that graduate, if they send their kid to Emmaus, there is an alumni scholarship out there. Because back then we considered each other, like, almost equals, because it was so similar. It wasn't until they started adding a bunch of things like football, baseball, whatever, which they have publicly said. That's kind of what affected school a lot. And that's eventually why they ran into some financial issues, and that's eventually why they shut down. [00:34:12] Speaker A: You see, like, another school, more recent with Trinity in Chicago and how they just said, shut everything down. Focused on the Bible. [00:34:19] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:34:19] Speaker A: So sad stuff. It is super sad. A lot of people lost their jobs. A lot of students lost their homes and didn't know their direction. [00:34:27] Speaker B: Right. [00:34:27] Speaker A: And we were praying for Trinity that. [00:34:31] Speaker C: We'Re not of this world. We're just so journeys in here. [00:34:33] Speaker A: It's true. [00:34:35] Speaker B: Amen, man. [00:34:36] Speaker A: But with that said, grace within men's and women's basketball had a combined of 21 tournament championships in their years. When they joined, I think late 60s. [00:34:46] Speaker C: Late 60s. [00:34:47] Speaker A: Wow. But Manhattan just passed that. [00:34:50] Speaker C: They just did. Wow. [00:34:50] Speaker A: They just passed it with 22. With men and women's basketball. [00:34:54] Speaker C: Just with both basketball combined. [00:34:55] Speaker A: Combined. Because they have 15 men's basketball championships. [00:34:59] Speaker C: Wow. [00:34:59] Speaker A: Tournament championships. And then they have, what, seven girls. But the thing is, keep in mind, Manhattan joined it. [00:35:06] Speaker C: They've won almost a fifth of all. [00:35:08] Speaker A: Yeah, they're the Patriots, but grace is the Patriots. You got the Patriots 49. [00:35:16] Speaker B: Right. [00:35:16] Speaker C: Because Steelers have 649. [00:35:18] Speaker A: But who's going to be the Chiefs? Who's growing, right? [00:35:20] Speaker C: Oh, man, that's a tough one. Maybe find out. [00:35:22] Speaker A: Maybe us, but no. [00:35:24] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:35:24] Speaker A: So Manhattan has really ran away with that. Calvary joined in 62. Like we said. [00:35:29] Speaker C: They have eight founding members. [00:35:31] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:35:31] Speaker A: Eight men's basketball tournament championships and then one women's. Okay, this is what is recorded. And if you're going to hate on. [00:35:38] Speaker C: Us, send us accurate information, please, because. [00:35:41] Speaker A: The website is not really updated. And if whoever's listening has a say or influence in that area help, please do it. Let's do it. Like even team up with us, we can help a little bit. [00:35:50] Speaker B: Right. [00:35:51] Speaker A: Barclay joined roughly around 72. That was their first championship. Or that was when they were called. [00:35:56] Speaker C: Championship friends Bible College. [00:35:57] Speaker B: Right. Yes. [00:35:58] Speaker C: And then they changed their name later to Barclay. [00:35:59] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:35:59] Speaker A: So they have three men's and zero women's. And then Ozark, 66, roughly, they have seven men's and then I believe, eight women's. Yeah, they have eight women's. [00:36:16] Speaker C: Women. Take on this is, if you look at all the teams that have been a part of the conference, only two teams, I guess us three teams, counting us, have had the same name. Everyone has changed their name. At least one. [00:36:28] Speaker A: Manhattan. [00:36:29] Speaker C: Manhattan Christian. They were Manhattan Bible College. They're not Manhattan Christian. [00:36:32] Speaker A: Okay, so we're not counting them. [00:36:33] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:36:33] Speaker C: Central Christian College of the Bible. [00:36:35] Speaker A: We joined in 14. [00:36:36] Speaker B: Dude. [00:36:36] Speaker A: Yeah. We changed our name. [00:36:38] Speaker C: But I think that's the kind of like, the cool thing you see of schools at our level. Like the amount of times that people have moved, like, you saw Covenant was in California, moved to St. Louis, then moved to Georgia. Or know faith moving from Omaha to Des Moines, or us moving from Toronto to Oak Park, Chicago, to a lot of movement. And so you just see that very common amongst schools at our level. [00:36:59] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:36:59] Speaker A: Just moving around, going to the best spots. And we were talking about that earlier, but either way, Emmaus won regular season for men's and then four for women's basketball. And then faith, seven for men, one for women, and then CCCB, one regular season championship and then one women's tournament championship. But like I said, everyone was in the 60s, excluding Barclay, Barclays joining early seventy s. Seventy s. But us 2014. So we're very small on that totem pole. But the thing is, we've just joined. We have just joined and we've just got a staff, right? This is like the new generation. So it is exciting. So it sucks to see not a lot of numbers just within those two. [00:37:42] Speaker C: Areas, but also knowing the numbers for the short time we've been a part. [00:37:45] Speaker A: Of, we've got seven. Seven tournament championships already within ten years. [00:37:48] Speaker C: Yeah, that's awesome. That's pretty good. [00:37:50] Speaker A: Yeah, that's really cool. [00:37:51] Speaker B: That's total. [00:37:51] Speaker A: Combined with that said, we're growing even. What's the saying? It's like, it's better on the other side. Or, I don't know. [00:38:02] Speaker C: What's a marathon? [00:38:03] Speaker A: No, not even a marathon. [00:38:04] Speaker B: I mean. [00:38:04] Speaker A: Yeah, it is. [00:38:05] Speaker C: It is a marathon. [00:38:05] Speaker A: The grass is greener on the other side. [00:38:07] Speaker C: Sometimes it's not. You never know. [00:38:10] Speaker A: But we're just getting there. [00:38:11] Speaker C: We're just getting there either way. [00:38:13] Speaker A: Everyone, thank you for listening to us today. Ramble about probably stuff you don't really care about with all of our. [00:38:18] Speaker C: But now you know a little bit about the athletics. Well, in a future episode, we'll talk about the NCAA, the history of that. But we wanted to share about the MCC because, like we say, so many people are like, okay, what's the difference between this and that? And there's so many C's and what's going on. But here's a little history of our small christian college conference that we're thankful to be a part of. [00:38:37] Speaker A: Yeah, MCC is a little bubble over here, while the NCAA has more of a tournament play that you had to work your way up into. But either way, we're thankful for the NCC, we're thankful for all the other partnerships that we have, and we're thankful for you guys for listening. So thanks for listening. Please take a part of helping our school, even if that's just listening to this podcast. Listening to. Sharing it, sharing it. Listening to. Concerning him and the other podcasts that. [00:39:07] Speaker C: We have concerning him. [00:39:08] Speaker A: Episodes recently, keeping up with our admissions page, we got a lot of fun, creative posts that are going out there. [00:39:15] Speaker C: We really do. [00:39:16] Speaker A: Our Emmaus Instagram page, Facebook, everything else, all the above, YouTube. So please check us out. Please stay involved for alums. Stay involved, stay connected. Reach out, talk to us. We'll give you a shout out shout to Ron Allen. He's always listening to the podcast. Love that dude. Emmanuel Delgado. He also told me that he listens, so that's cool. And Stevie, Stevie was listening the other day as Steve. [00:39:37] Speaker C: Appreciate the love and the support. [00:39:39] Speaker A: So either way, thank you everyone for listening. Like share, subscribe, whatever. Do all the above. And Matt, let them know it's a. [00:39:46] Speaker C: Great day to be an emmaus eagle. [00:39:48] Speaker A: Have a great day.
