[00:00:10] Speaker A: And welcome back, ladies and gentlemen, to in the Nest emas athletic sports podcast. I'm your co host Shane Douglas, here with Matthew Tomlinson, the Matthew Tomlinson assistant men's basketball coach, senior admissions counselor, and co host to everyone's favorite athletic podcast, in the Nest. Matt, how's it going today, Shane? [00:00:34] Speaker B: Going good. [00:00:34] Speaker A: That's a good intro for you. That was know husband of Rachel Tomlinson, rachel west, formerly known three point shooter, father of Isaiah Tomlinson and Levi Tomlinson, both future Eagles. There you go. [00:00:52] Speaker B: Future Huskies first. [00:00:54] Speaker A: Who was it that had a picture of them as a kid with Noah Eels? Was it Noah? [00:00:59] Speaker B: Yeah, because that's cool. When Mike was a student, his dad was a student, he had a shirt that said Future Maya Student on it. [00:01:05] Speaker A: That's really cool. [00:01:06] Speaker B: Isaiah does have one of those, too. It's going to happen, lord willing. [00:01:10] Speaker A: That'd be awesome. That'd be really cool. [00:01:12] Speaker B: Lord willing. [00:01:12] Speaker A: It'd be fun to come back to Lord willing and see Isaiah as a student. [00:01:19] Speaker B: Dr. Fish will still be teaching, so he'll be I think it's so cool. There's professors here that have taught literally three generations. They taught grandparents, parents, and now grandkids. It's so cool. [00:01:31] Speaker A: I have a guest visit today, and she came here back in the late ninety s, and she still remembers half the professors. She knows all the professors that were here at the time, obviously. [00:01:40] Speaker B: But then the mom, she used to babysit Eric Rasmussen, our producer. [00:01:45] Speaker A: That's really cool. Yeah. And so it's just like a blast from the past. It's really fun giving those visits and having those people come to Emmaus, who the formal alum and everyone. So if you are formal alum, just come by for a visit. We'll show you around, get you some. [00:01:59] Speaker B: Free coffee, see the new things that have happened, see the things that have like the good things that have stayed the same. And just the updates and everything. [00:02:06] Speaker A: That's the whole point for family alumni weekend, obviously. But yeah, so we don't have much going on this week. But I mean, how was your Thanksgiving? How about that? [00:02:14] Speaker B: It was really good. Went down to Branson, Missouri with my in laws, and we were there for, I think, four days, and it was really good. We actually went to the Sight and Sound Theater and watched the Queen Esther performance, which is really cool. Like you should really look into Sight and Sound because it's a Christian organization that puts on plays and this is, I think, their fifth play and they've done a movie. And so they just do a phenomenal job of taking stories from the Bible and just bringing them to life on stage and it's really cool. [00:02:45] Speaker A: Yeah. I've heard of multiple I've heard of Bramstead before. I've never been there. But people say it's like the Las Vegas for Christians. [00:02:52] Speaker B: Yeah. Because Silver Dollar City is like it's a Christian. [00:02:54] Speaker A: Is that the same thing? Silver Dollar City and Brampson are like. [00:02:57] Speaker B: Silver Dollar City is in Branson. It is a Christian theme park, basically. [00:03:02] Speaker A: Okay, cool. [00:03:03] Speaker B: It's really cool. [00:03:03] Speaker A: I have to make my way down there. It's warm down there, too. [00:03:05] Speaker B: Yeah, no, when we were at Silver Dollar City, it was 44 degrees. Was it like so they had to shut down some of the roller coasters because it was too cold for them to operate now. [00:03:18] Speaker A: Was there Christmas decorations around? [00:03:20] Speaker B: They were so we were actually there the first night of the tree lighting at Silver Dollar City special. I mean, it was packed. I mean, it was literally shoulder to shoulder the entire like we got there, we got a couple of rides early on, and then after that it was like two hour wait times. [00:03:35] Speaker A: Dang. [00:03:35] Speaker B: It was crazy. It was so full. [00:03:38] Speaker A: But beyond that, I've heard some fun things. I want to go, but at the same time it's like I don't I. [00:03:44] Speaker B: Definitely think it's one of those things where it's worth going, like, once in. [00:03:47] Speaker A: A life and then experience like the mecca. [00:03:50] Speaker B: Sure. [00:03:50] Speaker A: I'm joking. [00:03:51] Speaker B: Madison Square Garden, right? For basketball. [00:03:53] Speaker A: No. Yes, mecca for basketball. Yeah, whatever, let's not get into it. [00:04:00] Speaker B: But anyway, how was your Thanksgiving? You were here with your soon to be in laws, right? [00:04:05] Speaker A: I was. I had Thanksgiving with Rosie, my fiance's family. They had some of their family, which is from Branson, which is funny, Branson area. They came up and we had a good time, had a good meal, good time together. Yeah, it was fun. We went shooting, we shot some guns, some guy stuff. That was awesome. 22 rifle, which isn't like it's not much, but it was still pretty fun. And then I went home to my house for Thanksgiving and had Thanksgiving with my parents and so yeah, it was fun. I had three Thanksgiving shout out to your mom, three Thanksgiving meals. [00:04:42] Speaker B: An avid listener. [00:04:44] Speaker A: Oh yeah, she listened. That's funny, actually. But it doesn't matter. [00:04:48] Speaker B: But the real question before we start team Pumpkin Pie. Team pecan pie. [00:04:55] Speaker A: I'm Pumpkin. See, here's the thing. Are you pumpkin pie? [00:04:57] Speaker B: I go back and forth. [00:04:58] Speaker A: Are you allowed to have it? [00:04:59] Speaker B: Well, if it's dairy free, there are some good ones, but for you guys out there, please comment. Are you Team Pumpkin? I'm Pumpkin pecan or as some say, pecan pie. [00:05:10] Speaker A: I like both of them. [00:05:11] Speaker B: They're both I would say I've always been Pumpkin. I do like pecan pie, but Pumpkin, you can't go wrong. [00:05:16] Speaker A: I think they're both top tier, but I love this conversation. No, they're both top tier. S tier pies, no doubt. I do like berry pies, too. Those are good. Not a big apple pie is the. [00:05:26] Speaker B: Same color as basketball. [00:05:28] Speaker A: That's probably why you like it. [00:05:29] Speaker B: Sure. [00:05:29] Speaker A: Here's the thing. So with my fiance's family on both sides, the mother side and the father's side, both of their parents make pumpkin pie. So they took the best of each recipe and formed their own recipe. And it's super good. So we like the crust of this one and the filling on this one. [00:05:48] Speaker B: Let's bring it together thanos gauntlet. [00:05:50] Speaker A: Yeah, pretty much. Yeah. So I've never had a pumpkin pie better than that. All the pumpkin pies. [00:05:55] Speaker B: But you're a pumpkin pie snob then. [00:05:56] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. [00:05:56] Speaker B: Now I am. [00:05:57] Speaker A: I will not eat a pumpkin pie from the store. That's like trash, man. [00:06:01] Speaker B: But, like, homemade is really good. [00:06:02] Speaker A: Homemade is super good. So I'll take that. And then pecan. Pecan. I don't know how to say anymore. [00:06:08] Speaker B: Pecans. [00:06:08] Speaker A: No, that's all. What do you think, Will? [00:06:13] Speaker B: I don't like either pie. I'm just kidding. You a pie guy. Well, actually, you're not wrong, Matt. [00:06:18] Speaker A: You're not pie. [00:06:19] Speaker B: I don't really a pie guy. Depends. [00:06:21] Speaker A: Wait, cake or pie? [00:06:22] Speaker B: Cake. [00:06:24] Speaker A: There's a weding I went to, actually one of our coworkers, Becca Wright and Joe or not Becca Wright now, but Becca Rout. Joe rout their wedding. Because they cut a pie. They didn't do cake. They did pie. [00:06:36] Speaker B: We didn't do cake. We did donuts. [00:06:38] Speaker A: You cut donut. [00:06:39] Speaker B: We did donut. Well, we had, like, a cake that we cut, but then everyone had donuts. [00:06:43] Speaker A: What should I do? What should I comment? Comment come up to me. What I should do. [00:06:47] Speaker B: Crispy cream. [00:06:48] Speaker A: Should I do cake, donut, pie? Nothing. I don't know. So those are good. [00:06:53] Speaker B: Midwest. Do Midwest. Have some meatloaf or cut a meatloaf. [00:07:00] Speaker A: Get, like, a roast beef. [00:07:01] Speaker B: You should do I know we're way off topic, but you should do a not even talking about sports. [00:07:07] Speaker A: Okay. [00:07:07] Speaker B: We'll put a link in the description. Skip to this if you want to talk about sports. [00:07:11] Speaker A: They'll do the breakdown. [00:07:14] Speaker B: Is it cake or is it not? [00:07:17] Speaker A: Do a not cake that looks like. [00:07:18] Speaker B: A cake or something. [00:07:20] Speaker A: That would be like a shoe or something. That'd be cool. Yeah. Will put in the segments of introduction, basketball, men's, women's, et cetera. [00:07:32] Speaker B: Shane and Matthew. [00:07:33] Speaker A: Ten minutes of us talking of the introduction. That'd be funny. We still have our lucky little guy here. [00:07:39] Speaker B: We've had a few people we've had two people comment and give their suggestions of names. But we need some more people to yeah. [00:07:48] Speaker A: So some of those names are some. [00:07:55] Speaker B: Soccer so we have Chuma and we have Hackett. [00:07:57] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:07:58] Speaker B: Josh, Matt, and then we need some more names. [00:08:00] Speaker A: Henry. [00:08:00] Speaker B: Henry Magalone. [00:08:06] Speaker A: So some of the soccer guys really want josh, Matt came up to me soccer captain and came up with a bunch of names. [00:08:13] Speaker B: Is this more of a Carlos or more of an Edwin? That's the thing. [00:08:15] Speaker A: Yeah. So he's making fun of or he's playing fun with the way they would pronounce names with Edwin's of our would. [00:08:25] Speaker B: It would. [00:08:25] Speaker A: And they pronounced one of our players last names as Magalone. [00:08:29] Speaker B: Magalone. [00:08:30] Speaker A: Magalone. So that is not how you pronounce it. And then you got Tuma, another last name. And then Henry. I don't know where Henry's from. [00:08:37] Speaker B: Henry the hedgehog, I guess. [00:08:39] Speaker A: It's fun. It's a good one. And then what was the other one? [00:08:41] Speaker B: Hatchet. [00:08:41] Speaker A: Hatchet. [00:08:42] Speaker B: So good names. [00:08:44] Speaker A: Hatchet's a good one because it's like from an egg. But even though he's a hedgehog, it's not bad. And then we have another friend that's joining the mix. If you follow Emmaus on social media or Emmaus admissions, which is a fun page, please follow. [00:08:59] Speaker B: Please. There's a lot of great things from that. [00:09:00] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:09:00] Speaker B: But you would have seen a sneak. [00:09:01] Speaker A: Peek, a little sneak peek. I think it was on the story was it was a clear image of what it is. This is a new family member of the Emmaus Merch line that we have. [00:09:14] Speaker B: Look at it. [00:09:15] Speaker A: We don't really have a name for him. I mean, the given name for our eagle here is Eddie, but that's literally every eagle known to man. So he's hooded or unhooded, depending on how he's feeling. But yeah, there's some big news upcoming, so stay in tune. Stay in touch with our admissions page on Instagram of what will be coming to your doorsteps. [00:09:38] Speaker B: Possibly if you fill out an application and get accepted, might be some good things coming your way. [00:09:43] Speaker A: Exactly. So figure that out. But we've talked a lot. We've had a long intro, literally half the you will. And so let's talk about a little bit more now. [00:09:53] Speaker B: You can hit record will. [00:09:54] Speaker A: Exactly. So we still have our little whiteboard. So we will try to not talk about that anymore. But it will be there for as long as possible. But I'm sure someday yeah, it'll get. [00:10:07] Speaker B: Brought up and we can't really what you're talking about. [00:10:09] Speaker A: Me neither. So today in the nest, while you guys are all watching today and listening. [00:10:15] Speaker B: Now you can wake up because we're talking about man athletics. [00:10:18] Speaker A: It is fun. I hope people come up to us and talk about pies and cakes because. [00:10:23] Speaker B: That'S an important question. [00:10:24] Speaker A: We still got to talk about coffee bean drinks. No one has gotten me a coffee bean drink. It's ridiculous. I've been waiting. It's like not getting asked to prom or the dance. [00:10:35] Speaker B: That's also tough. [00:10:36] Speaker A: You're homeschooling. [00:10:37] Speaker B: I don't have no idea what you're talking about. [00:10:40] Speaker A: Exactly. And you're just beautiful. Okay, so today in episode, we're going to recap the basketball team. [00:10:47] Speaker B: We have two games, two basketball games that were played before Thanksgiving break after our last recording. [00:10:53] Speaker A: So recap that and then talk about some upcoming games and how the turkey and the stuffing is going to affect the players today. And then we'll talk about some upcoming episodes that we have in the works. But let's talk about basketball. Matt, what is going on, my man? [00:11:09] Speaker B: Yahoo. Yep. So basketball, kind of like the first half of the first semester, came to an end. So the men had six games before Thanksgiving break. The women had five games before Thanksgiving break, and then girls will have two games after between Christmas break, and then the men will have six games. So currently, as we stand, the last episode we recorded before the Marinatha game, both teams went up and played at Marinatha, and unfortunately, both teams came home to Dubuque with a loss. Girls, the girls game was super close. They ended up losing by six points. Dang they definitely had a chance to win, and they probably should have won, but they didn't really have a great shooting game. And so while okay, yeah, a loss is a loss, and a lot of people say there's no spirit wins, but there was a lot of good that came from that loss. Like the fact, yeah, it was a six point loss. They're right. There probably both teams are probably there's a lot. Like, of the six regional teams, well, there's only five because Moody doesn't have a girls team. But it's like the Kuiper. It's like the Grace girls, I think. And then like, Kuiper, Great Lakes, Marinatha, us are kind of like in a little bubble right there. Close. And so they ended up finishing one in five through the first half of the first semester. And so while that lost to Marinatha, but it was still like they played well. I know Hannah fouled out pretty early on in the fourth quarter. [00:12:51] Speaker A: You never want to see that. You never do. Yeah. [00:12:52] Speaker B: And so that definitely took a big hit. Anna Harwood played amazing defense on their best player, but that was really good. But she gave the defense her all, and so that was really good to see. But yeah, so a lot of good things from that, but unfortunately, they did not win. On the guys on our team, on the other hand, we just played really bad. We started the game off, I think, down, like, 90. Just couldn't quite get into a rhythm. We didn't shoot very well. We had 1518 turnovers. Just couldn't quite figure it out. We ended up losing 86 70, so we lost by 16. If we come back and play them in the same context, I think the score will be different. Yeah. I was talking to Will earlier, and obviously we're at the semester, we're two and four right now, but honestly, we easily could be five and one because we have a six point loss, a ten point loss. And then that game, I think we just dug ourselves in such a deep hole in the first half, we couldn't get out of it. I had to ask a lot of good learning curve things, but still, what's. [00:14:04] Speaker A: The one who's the one? You think you guys just did not play well against Providence. Okay, fair enough. [00:14:09] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:14:09] Speaker A: But everyone else feeling just not the day. [00:14:16] Speaker B: And it's also like those games going into break are so hard because you have the distractions of, okay, I'm done for a week after this. And so even when I played, yeah, it was always tough going into, you know, that's a regional loss, so that hurts. But we play them again in, I think, late January, early February, so we'll be able to get it. [00:14:43] Speaker A: And nothing against Maranatha or anyone we play, but some of these games just mean more to exactly the players, like. [00:14:50] Speaker B: Some a little bit more than others. [00:14:52] Speaker A: And this is Marinatha is definitely one of those because it's always been a battle back and forth between Maranath and Emmaus. And we've built these rivalries with these schools, and there's no hate. I mean, there might be some amongst some players on both sides, but they. [00:15:06] Speaker B: Really shouldn't be especially as Christian Bible colleges, there shouldn't be any. [00:15:14] Speaker A: I mean, we see this with Marinatham and all this other schools in our region, but I don't know about what it is with Marinatha. It's just a little bit more. There's a couple of them. [00:15:26] Speaker B: There's only the Marinatha guys. They're playing very well. I mean, they have an incredible post player, Will Schultz. And he is just I mean, he is he's six six. He's super agile. He is very good at basketball. And he picked us apart. Not to take away saying, like, we lost to a bad team, like Marinath is good. I just feel like if we had done the things that we could have done better that we're good at, it would have been a different outcome. But not to take away from so two and four one. And so I'm encouraging for the girls they had because they didn't get a first semester win last year and so they have a first semester win this year, which is really good. So looking ahead, guys, team, we have six games remaining. So we have one on Saturday against Kuiper and then we have two next week. And then after finals, we're in a post finals trip to Michigan. [00:16:20] Speaker A: Yes. [00:16:21] Speaker B: We're going to go down to Galesburg and play Knox College right after finals, then drive to Michigan. I think we're going to do some fun team activities. We might go see a basketball game. We can go see some historical things, which will be a lot of fun. [00:16:34] Speaker A: It'll be good for the players. [00:16:35] Speaker B: Yeah, it'll be good bonding moments and then time for all of us. And then the girls have two games remaining. So they play Kuiper on Saturday and then they have an entire week until they play FLBC again. [00:16:46] Speaker A: Yeah, I think the team's growing a lot. And you guys have a long stretch of games to finish out this semester for both sides of men's and women's. [00:16:58] Speaker B: Six games in 17 days. [00:16:59] Speaker A: Yeah. So far, the season hasn't looked like how everyone wants it to look. Obviously, it's hard to paint it the way you want when you might not have the pieces you need or even you might not be equipped as a team and your culture and what you've built. So I just know that from last year and last year, especially with the women's team, just the culture of the team was amazing. And it was a sisterhood, unlike a lot of the other teams, and they really came together and it was beautiful seeing at the end of season them pull through a couple of wins, those. [00:17:39] Speaker B: Two wins at the end of the year. [00:17:40] Speaker A: So awesome. And I'm excited for this team with it, adding some talent and seeing what they can do because they're for them. [00:17:47] Speaker B: They have four seniors, so they have four girls with lots of experience, so they can carry that into the rest of the season, utilize that. But also next year, there's a lot of opportunity for new players to come in and take significant roles because you've graduated four starters, basically. And so there's a lot of growth and a lot of room for new. [00:18:06] Speaker A: Recruits out there, possibly adding new players next semester. So there's a lot of improvement going on happening women's basketball team. And then adding, of course, Coach Alex. She's been very helpful. [00:18:21] Speaker B: Coach Sharon, who she had that winning culture at Moody because she played at Moody is when their Moody girls were very good. [00:18:28] Speaker A: Yeah. And Coach Sharon super busy with a lot of stuff, being one of the assistant Ads, so a lot of stuff on her to be I'm excited to see now there's two coaches that they got full time, pretty much. [00:18:41] Speaker B: And it's hard because being an assistant coach, when you have a full time job off campus, it makes it difficult to be at things. So it's nice to have a head coach who works on campus that's able to fully devote to that and then assistant coach who's also on campus and can just be around at more things because it's hard. [00:18:58] Speaker A: Yeah. And one of the things that I love about I don't know what it's like at other schools, I'm sure it's very similar at other schools, but just how relaxed the students are, but not in a disrespectful way, but how relaxed the student athletes are. And they just come see you guys every day. There's a basketball guy coming into our. [00:19:17] Speaker B: Office joking like, why are they where's Matt? Where's Matt? [00:19:19] Speaker A: And they're always in Coach Phillips office. They're always with Coach Sharon. They're always with Coach Megan, coach Hannah when she's know, I'm sure they're always with Coach Alex. [00:19:33] Speaker B: Be around, not just in the practice context or in the game context, outside of all that. That's when you really grow your camaraderie. [00:19:41] Speaker A: They really have a relationship with the coach. And that's something that we have here at Emmaus, which is so great. I mean, we're admissions counselors. We plug Emmaus all the time. We talk about it. And the greatest aspect of this school is the relationships. [00:19:52] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. I mean, you're actually discipling. Like, yes, you want to win, you want to compete, but you're discipling and you can have you value and you're viewing your players as people, not just like, oh, you're not just a basketball player. You are a student here. You're a young adult, like, you are a brother or sister in Christ while you perform goes up and down. But that's not where your value is. Your value isn't who you. [00:20:21] Speaker A: What I tell every student, this isn't just for athletics, but true at Emmaus. So if you go to another school and depending on the school, of course, and depending your experience, it's always different. And Emmaus isn't for everyone, right? [00:20:35] Speaker B: Everyone has different, better experiences there or here. [00:20:38] Speaker A: But from what I've experienced, what I've heard from other people, and what we've experienced as admissions counselors from students either transferring here when you go to another school, especially a bigger school, and you walk across that stage of graduation, your professor will barely know who you are. And there might be a couple of students. [00:20:55] Speaker B: What's your name again? [00:20:56] Speaker A: Like, two students, maybe five in the audience that know who you are, really. [00:21:00] Speaker B: Know who you are. They know your story. Yeah. [00:21:02] Speaker A: And that's the complete opposite effect here at Emas. You'll walk across the stage, not just your professor, but all the professors will know who you are. The VPs of the school, the president of the school will know who you are. [00:21:14] Speaker B: They'll know your story departments, all the seniors. [00:21:17] Speaker A: That's the thing is everyone in the audience other than the parents, all the students and faculty and staff in the audience will know who you are. And what I say by know who you are. These people. When you're a student at Know, in our experience, one of the things we experience is when sitting down in a dorm room and talking about your story, your testimony, how you came to know Jesus Christ as your Lord. And savior and sharing that experience, that story with one another, to grow a relationship and a bond and to be able to walk through the hallways and be like, yo, I know that guy's story. I know that girl's story. Because of that relationship that you grow with people here, it's genuine, and people want to have that relationship. And the funny thing is, I even say the people who clean the toilets shout out, housekeeping will know who you are, right? And they want to get to know you. So that's something that you see a lot and I think is a beautiful aspect of athletics for you, May, is we show that in the front lines exactly of those relationships. [00:22:14] Speaker B: And it's like, I think I could say I could have a conversation with every single person here, and that's a good thing. Some people might think that's a bad thing. No, that's a great thing. You know who people are. It's not like you're walking through the halls and you're like, hey, man, you a freshman. No, man, I'm a senior. Like, my bad. [00:22:34] Speaker A: Yeah, I know. [00:22:35] Speaker B: Yeah, you know everyone, which is great. It's super important because we're people, not numbers, not exactly, not unknown faces. You are a person. You're a name you're loved. You are a son and daughter of God made in his image. It's great. [00:22:53] Speaker A: It is. And I mean, we're level headed people. We're not crazy or brainwashed. We want to be working here. If we didn't have a great experience and didn't love this place and if we didn't have the relationships, the only. [00:23:03] Speaker B: Reason I came share our experience with. [00:23:05] Speaker A: Others, the fact that I came back to Dubuque was to grow relationships because this was my that was, that was it. But I mean, this we kind of got off topic a little bit of basketball. But that's the beautiful thing about the sports here and what these basketball teams can show us. And we shared last year on the podcast of what the basketball teams and the testimony that they had a couple of years ago when you were playing with other schools and how are they like, you guys play different, you guys act, you guys have relationships with one another. Tell me about that. And they had an opportunity to share the gospel with another student on another team because of the way they state university. [00:23:39] Speaker B: And he got saved. [00:23:39] Speaker A: Yeah. There you go. [00:23:40] Speaker B: So cool. [00:23:41] Speaker A: And just because of the way they carried themselves on the field, on the court, and how they interacted with each other on the bench, in the locker room. [00:23:48] Speaker B: And I think that was just such a I would say almost like an eye opening moment because you always hear that, like, oh, the way you play, people know. And you're like, Is that really true? And it's like no, it really is true. Because I even think, like, this is more off topic, but I even think, like, a couple of years ago, when all the guys were living in your house, when you had like, 13 guys at your house. And it wasn't 13 guys, but your neighbor came to normal by and she's like, a bunch of guys live in the house. Okay? There was only like twelve guys, five at the time. They live in the house next door, and they're not like other people. And I want to know why. And it's just like that testimony, it's so real. Like scripture says, people know Christians because of their love, because of our love for one another. And it shows. Like, it's genuine, it's real. [00:24:36] Speaker A: And the tough part is being an athlete and being especially an athlete representing a Christian college, being at a Christian college, being a Christian is tough. It doesn't make it easier, honestly. A life of a Christian is you don't say, okay, this is an easy path. It's going to be much more difficult than saying you're not a believer and going living a life that you want. I mean, that sounds easy, but being a Christian, holding up that testimony, because thing is, you're representing Jesus and you're representing the gospel wherever you go, however you live, however you speak. And as an athlete, it's whether you. [00:25:11] Speaker B: Have Emmaus or you don't have Emmaus. [00:25:13] Speaker A: And when you're out there on the field, when you're out there on the court, the track, whatever it is, and you had to represent Emmaus aside, you're representing Christ is tough. First, it's really tough, and I say it's tough because you're competitive, you're competing, you're trying to win. Do your best. If you aren't doing your best, if you can't compete because of the pieces around you or maybe yourself, and you haven't trained yourself to be the best you can, and you're playing against a team that might be a little scrappy, might be a little physical, might be. [00:25:47] Speaker B: A little chirpy under your skin. [00:25:50] Speaker A: The thing is, everyone's like that. I'm sure there's players here that they chirp too much. I know we've had in the past, it's been like this. One of our players suplexed one another. Remember that? That was fun. We won't talk about that. But with that said, it's like, you really have to hold us a testimony. [00:26:11] Speaker B: And it becomes real because I mean. [00:26:12] Speaker A: It becomes real for you in that moment. [00:26:13] Speaker B: A bigger microscope. [00:26:14] Speaker A: Exactly. So you're talking about it really became real for you in that situation with sharing that gospel with the other. [00:26:22] Speaker B: And it's just been so cool to see volleyball winning back to back sportsmanship awards, the girls basketball team winning sportsmanship award, and it's like seeing, like, the success and then still upholding Christian character and values and not pushing those aside to be competitive. It's just super cool to see that. Praise the Lord for that. [00:26:42] Speaker A: It is. Yeah, exactly. Amen, man. It's fun. It's awesome. And I'm really excited. We don't just talk about the excitement of sports and competing at another level and being able to compete with Crown, even though there's some statistics aside, we were able to compete with Crown and only lose by one goal. Was it one goal? [00:27:00] Speaker B: Yeah. Four to three. [00:27:01] Speaker A: Yeah, only one goal. And the crown ended up going pretty. [00:27:03] Speaker B: Far in the quarterfinals. [00:27:05] Speaker A: Yeah. So the fact that we're able to and that's just soccer. Volleyball, too. We beat Manhattan in a set, and. [00:27:13] Speaker B: They were runners up in the national championship. [00:27:15] Speaker A: So being able to be in step and make those leaps to being a more competitive team and be able to keep a testimony is the most difficult thing in Christian collegiate sports, and even professional, too, honestly. But yeah, I mean, as a Christian, so I'm happy and I'm extremely proud of our Eagles this year. And it's not even over. And now we have men's and women's basketball to root for. And I expect you students to be out there and anyone in the neighborhood of Dubuque or that can make the drive, parents and family, you guys have always been repping, and we love you. We appreciate you. So thank you. [00:27:54] Speaker B: If you're in the Chicago area on Tuesday, we're there at 06:00 P.m. Playing moody at moody. [00:27:58] Speaker A: There you go. So show on up. We love that. We got tons of alum in Chicago. Call them up. So it's a great community to be a part of, and it's a whole testament of its own, being able to fulfill that and hold up to it. [00:28:13] Speaker B: When you're an athletic. [00:28:14] Speaker A: So thank you to all the athletes that we have this year and how they've done a great job on and off the field. And even if they have failed in other moments, and I'm sure they have. [00:28:24] Speaker B: We'Re all sinful falling creatures. We all fail. But being able to still, we got to work on it. [00:28:29] Speaker A: Let's work on it. And that's fine. We're not even, like, talking about a specific subject. This has happened. We just talked about this. So looking forward to I'm really looking forward to this weekend against Kuiper. A lot of hype behind Kuiper this. [00:28:40] Speaker B: Year for first year with their sports back. So exciting. [00:28:43] Speaker A: They got a whole new team. They got a couple new teams, actually. And then who the women's play? [00:28:47] Speaker B: They play Kuiper as well. [00:28:48] Speaker A: They play Kuiper. And how's the women's Kuiper team look this year? [00:28:50] Speaker B: Pretty decent. Yeah, they're actually currently yesterday they played in the Little Caesars Arena for the Detroit Pistons. They played at community college, and then the Pistons and the Lakers played after them. [00:29:02] Speaker A: That's awesome. Did they go to that game? [00:29:04] Speaker B: I'm sure they do. [00:29:04] Speaker A: Did they meet them in the locker room, I wonder. [00:29:06] Speaker B: Yeah, like that's a what the heck? Yeah, that's awesome. [00:29:08] Speaker A: Why don't we got that? Yeah, right. [00:29:09] Speaker B: Why don't we got that? Come on, man. [00:29:11] Speaker A: That's cool. So looking forward to Kuiper this weekend. Stay in tune. Touch. Yeah. [00:29:16] Speaker B: Keep an eye out. We have some signings coming up, so keep an eye out for those. Got some really exciting things coming. [00:29:24] Speaker A: Share our videos. We do live stream our game, so even if you can't make it, watch, it would be awesome. [00:29:30] Speaker B: Please. [00:29:31] Speaker A: But what did you say? Oh, signings. We got some signings coming up for some volleyball stuff. [00:29:38] Speaker B: Yeah. So super exciting. [00:29:39] Speaker A: Any soccer? [00:29:41] Speaker B: We're close. [00:29:43] Speaker A: We got a lot of recruits in the funnel. [00:29:45] Speaker B: We have two volleyball signings. [00:29:46] Speaker A: Wait for the spring. Wait for the spring. But let's talk a little bit shortly. We're going to wrap up here, but we have some next episodes coming. [00:29:56] Speaker B: So next episode, we'll have a midseason interview with Coach Sharon Tomlinson, the head girls coach, also your sister and also my sister. And then the week after, we'll have an interview with Coach Philip Parker, the men's head coach, kind of talking recapping the semester, talking about looking ahead to the spring semester. And then after school gets out for the semester over the Christmas season, we'll have three episodes. We'll have an episode recapping volleyball, an episode recapping soccer, and an episode recapping cross country where we'll interview the head coaches and then some of the players on each team. So those should be some really fun, just hearing about the testimony from the players and how they thought the season went and their experience, and then from the coaches. So it should be really exciting. [00:30:43] Speaker A: I just breathed them really loudly. I was going to speak, but then you kept talking, so I stopped. So I'm sorry for that. But, yeah. So looking forward to those interviews. It's going to be really fun. And so stay in touch with in the Nest, our athletic podcast here on what do we got? We got YouTube. Apple. Podcasts. Will, you're wearing purple crocs. That is a fashion choice. [00:31:16] Speaker B: Pink crocs. [00:31:16] Speaker A: I am, I guess. [00:31:17] Speaker B: You got perfection. They're lavender, actually. [00:31:20] Speaker A: You got, like, a lavender shirt on. Wow. Okay. [00:31:25] Speaker B: You're not wearing lavender socks. You have a lavender headband for your game. No. You think I wear a headband? That's horrible. Oh, no. What's wrong with a headband? A headband? [00:31:40] Speaker A: Didn't you wear headband? [00:31:40] Speaker B: It would irritate I always wore headband. They were the best thing. It would irritate me so much when your forehead is the size of Peyton Manning's forehead.
