[00:00:00] Speaker A: Cross country is set to go to nationals this week. They've really lived up to the potential, the hype. And welcome back to the official Emmaus athletic podcast. In the nest. I'm your co host, Shane and I'm here with Matthew Tomlinson. I guess I'm just Shane. Shane Douglas here with Matthew Tomlinson. Always and forever. Um, it's great that people can fill in for me. You know, when I'm on the road it just seems like you're never on the road, you're never traveling. [00:00:34] Speaker B: Yep. You don't do 1am this morning. You don't get back home. [00:00:37] Speaker A: You don't do. It's good to be back. Enjoyed and very thankful for Landon being able to step in last week. So he did a great job. Thank you. Shout out Landon, the first student co host. Yeah, I think he was. Yeah, yeah. So that was great. We've been wanting to get more students on here, especially our student athletes. And thank you for opening that door, Landon. So shout out to you. We love that. But good to be back. Been traveling a lot for work, going a lot of conferences. Was just out in Kentucky at the Ark, which. The Ark is awesome. [00:01:09] Speaker B: It is. And the Creation Museum too. [00:01:11] Speaker A: Yeah. So we didn't get to the Creation Museum but I went to the Ark and Creation Museum a couple years ago, 2019 and I didn't appre. That is a couple. Five. I don't know, five like yesterday. But it, I didn't, I feel like I didn't appreciate as much cuz this time around I was gobbled up everything. I gobbled it up. I love the ark. It was great. I want to go back. Honestly. I would love to go back and like walk through ark again and go to the zoo. [00:01:37] Speaker B: It's like it's not like a half day thing. Like it is a full day experience. [00:01:40] Speaker A: Like you go to the Ark. ARC's full day. One day and then a museum is. [00:01:44] Speaker B: I mean museum is like 1 1/2 days. Honestly. Cuz there's so much there. [00:01:48] Speaker A: So much there. And I, I, I, I really zoomed through it the, the first time. So. Yeah. [00:01:54] Speaker B: You're working on your 40 time. [00:01:55] Speaker A: Yeah. That's what, that's stupid. I was cross country. [00:01:58] Speaker B: Your PR record. [00:01:59] Speaker A: Yeah. Which cross country is set to go to nationals this week? [00:02:05] Speaker B: They are, they probably. They're leaving right around now. When we're recording for their race on Friday. Shane. [00:02:11] Speaker A: I'm excited for them. [00:02:12] Speaker B: Let's go. [00:02:13] Speaker A: I'm excited for them. They're. They've really lived up to the Potential. The hype. And I just can't wait for. To see what they're able to do this weekend on the road. Like most of the people. They're going to Michigan. Correct. [00:02:25] Speaker B: Indiana. [00:02:25] Speaker A: Indiana. So a little further. A little further is underneath it. Michigan is. No, Indiana is closer than Michigan. [00:02:33] Speaker B: Underneath it. [00:02:35] Speaker A: Yeah, something like that. It's closer, though. [00:02:37] Speaker B: Anyway. [00:02:38] Speaker A: Yeah, man, we need to go back to school. [00:02:41] Speaker B: I guess. We got to go. We got to go sit in Mrs. McDowell's history class. [00:02:44] Speaker A: I don't want to. [00:02:45] Speaker B: Geography class, but, yeah, they have a tremendous opportunity. I was thinking yesterday, I'm like, the saying that they need a trademark is. You know how the Rock says, can you smell. The Rock is cooking. Can you smell what the Girardis are cooking? [00:02:59] Speaker A: No. [00:02:59] Speaker B: Because they have put together such a good team. Pasta pregame. Here we go. But, yeah, what a. What an amazing opportunity they have to compete at nationals. This year has been an amazing year, especially for the men, and the women have done very well as well. But it's exciting because. [00:03:17] Speaker A: Well, as well. [00:03:18] Speaker B: We'll see what happens. Yeah, good things will happen. [00:03:21] Speaker A: Well, we'll talk more about that as the show continues. But really, this episode, we're transitioning as a transition episode from fall sports to winter sports. So last week, Landon and Matt were able to talk about the upcoming games, as well as tournament play for the Eagles for men's and women's basketball, winter sports, and the wrap up of our fall sports with soccer and volleyball. So now we're really making that transition. Our fault. Two of our. Two of the three fall sports, men's soccer and women's volleyball, have come to a close. [00:03:58] Speaker B: They are done. [00:03:59] Speaker A: And then officially. And then we, like we said, we got cross country. Still. Still pushing it. And then we have men's basketball, men's or men's basketball, women's basketball on the roll. They're going on it. So they're. They're in a full swing of things. [00:04:17] Speaker B: They are. [00:04:18] Speaker A: They are. How's it been, coach? [00:04:20] Speaker B: It's been good. It's been fun. I mean, basketball's finally here. Like, we started later than normal, and so the anticipation was. Was getting a little itchy because we wanted games to happen. But I'm excited it's finally here, and both teams have some very promising things. [00:04:32] Speaker A: That they're looking at, so. And we will get into that. [00:04:35] Speaker B: We will. [00:04:35] Speaker A: So put a pause in that. Put a pen there. But we got to talk about wrapping up this season for men's soccer and women's volleyball, which ultimately, Matt, it's the best way to put it, is it was a great season. A lot of ups, a lot of downs, but in the end, disappointing, disappointing, disappointing finish. [00:04:56] Speaker B: We'll go with some good news. First we'll talk about, let's say the. [00:04:59] Speaker A: Good move for last. [00:05:00] Speaker B: No, we'll go with the conference. [00:05:01] Speaker A: I want to go last with that. [00:05:02] Speaker B: Because that's important to Fine. To talk about how they started and how they finished. So. [00:05:08] Speaker A: So you, so you would eat a churro first in your, in your meal? You eat dessert first if it's dairy free? [00:05:13] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:05:14] Speaker A: Over your main course. [00:05:15] Speaker B: Dude, whenever the churro bars are out there for tacos, I eat that first. [00:05:18] Speaker A: You eat the churro first and then you go in for the taco. [00:05:20] Speaker B: All right, Shane. So the Midwest region awards. Looking at the soccer year, we have actually, and volleyball, we have two awesome awards. Both Coach McHugh and Coach Richter got coaches of the year in the region. [00:05:36] Speaker A: There we go. [00:05:37] Speaker B: There it goes. [00:05:38] Speaker A: Congratulations. [00:05:38] Speaker B: Shout out Coach McHugh and Coach Hannah on coaches of the year. Back to back for coach Hannah. Super exciting. Looking at soccer, Tucker Cappas, Josh Matt and Jake. Matt received first team all conference awards. Congratulations was honorable mention and then a new award. Jake Matt, newcomer of the year. Super exciting. And then for the women's volleyball, along with coach of the year for coach Hannah, first team awarded were Caitlin Ran, Selah Gregory and Michelle Stryley. And then second team was Jenica Beach. And Jenica for the second year in a row was libero of the year. So shout out to our eagles who performed well this year and, you know, received awards that was recognized by other coaches in the region. [00:06:29] Speaker A: Yeah. So, I mean, a lot of that just shows how promising our teams are and how. How great of student athletes we do have. And when come come at the end of the year, we usually have a ton on the list of the student athlete academic. What's the term for that? [00:06:45] Speaker B: Academic All American. [00:06:46] Speaker A: Academic All American. [00:06:47] Speaker B: Those will come out later. [00:06:48] Speaker A: Yeah, we usually have a full list of our athletes on that list, which is always an awesome time because it really proves that our students are. Our athletes, are more than athletes or students. And they're involved. They're involved on campus and activities, but also in the classroom. So looking forward to that. And I hope I don't have to eat my words. I hope you guys are actually studying, you know, hopefully. Oh, my goodness. [00:07:12] Speaker B: But like you said, of those eight students that received awards, only one senior. So very promising young group of great athletes. Great student athletes. [00:07:21] Speaker A: It's true. And we Talked about how it is disappointing. And of course, we only feel as fans, as people who are involved in the athletic realm here at Emmaus. And same to you watching, either if you're a family member or if you're just alum or just friends of the school, a fan, we only feel a little bit. We only feel a little bit of disappointment. So being an athlete on the team, it's. It's so much worse. It's so much more emotions and effort, time, energy that have been put into this that you could have been putting into relationships, being put into a lot of other things. So we, first off, we thank you. We thank you. And it's the time of Thanksgiving. [00:08:00] Speaker B: It is. [00:08:01] Speaker A: We are very thankful for all our athletes on our men's soccer team, our women's volleyball team, specifically as. As their. Their season has come to an end. But we are very thankful for the time, the energy of. Put into how well you have represented the name Emmaus on the field, on the court, but most importantly, our Lord Jesus. So thank you guys so much for the season. You've given us all the laughs, all the excitement on this podcast on the show, like in the hallways, on the field, on the court, in the gym. So fun. It's been so fun this season and I'm so thankful for you guys bringing back a lot of the energy here at Emmaus. [00:08:42] Speaker B: Yes, from just 100%, a lot of. [00:08:44] Speaker A: Dead years from COVID But things are coming back. It's an exciting time to be Eagle. We talk about it all the time. So much stuff is happening and it's. A lot of it is because of you guys. It is so the listeners, but as well as you athletes that we have here. So thank you so much for everything you have put in to email us to the sport, to each other, and then also the coaches, the time, what they've done. We know how you recruit hours. So we're thankful. We're thankful all of you. And we know that with this young team, Matt, it's going to be. It's a promising future. It is promising future next two to. [00:09:20] Speaker B: Three years that we. And if we can keep building off of that five to 10 years, a lot of great, great things can happen and will happen. [00:09:28] Speaker A: And inexperience comes in experience. And our inexperience has really shown in postseason this year in conference as well as in regionals. And with that, I hope it gives more hunger to our student athletes on a women's volleyball team and a men's soccer team. And next year we can really Bring it. [00:09:45] Speaker B: Because they got a little bit of taste this year. [00:09:48] Speaker A: Just a little bit. [00:09:49] Speaker B: And hopefully it whets the appetite to continue going on because it's. It'll be there in the future. [00:09:56] Speaker A: So. But thank you guys so much and look forward to next year. So if you're an athlete, if you're someone who wants to be recruited, fill that recruiting app. If you're a men's soccer player, women's volleyball. Volleyball player. [00:10:07] Speaker B: Follow us on social media, hit up the recruiting forums and we'll see what happens. [00:10:11] Speaker A: You know, here's the thing. As someone who deals with recruits and everything, you come play one for a coach that is recognized as one of the best coaches in their expertise, their area of expertise. Come join a program that isn't just something to help create. Like creating a program is something special. Anyone can join a Bob Jones or Pensacola that brings in awards every year. But to come to Emmaus where we don't go to nationals a lot, and to create a legacy. Come create something here. Yes, right. But then you also have these programs that have proven themselves this year to be successful. So you're not just also creating, but you're also joining that creation process. Yes, that we have. Our coaches and our athletes have already put together, put pieces in place because we have made it far. We have awards. We have shown it right here. We've shown it on the stats. We've shown it in our record. The steps that we're a team to watch out for. [00:11:13] Speaker B: Athletics has taken these last five years has been humongous. Yeah, it really has. [00:11:17] Speaker A: So you can join a team that is a calendar or circled on the calendar consistently with other from our opponents. [00:11:25] Speaker B: Or hope to try out for one of those teams because this is. Because they're so full. [00:11:29] Speaker A: Yeah, volleyball is pretty full. And soccer, I mean you need a lot of. You need a lot of bodies out there. So. But come join. Come join. Play for. Play for a great coach. Play for a great institution. Institution here the Lord. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Are you okay? [00:11:45] Speaker B: But yeah. Looking at soccer. Shane. No, Shane, we're talking about depressing things because of how we finished. Looking at soccer. Soccer was in the semifinals and they had a rematch against the home host school, Grace University, who was actually ranked third in the nation at the time. [00:12:02] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:12:03] Speaker B: And we lost to him previously, I think earlier in the season. Was it 3:1 or is it 4:1? But yeah, looking for a big rematch. But right off the gate, Seth got hurt out for the game. We got a penalty. They call the penalty on us in the Box. And they scored off of that. And so we lost 2 0. Super sad. But Grace went on to win regionals and go to nationals and so we had a shot. I mean, Tucker kept us in the game the whole game. I think he probably saved like six guaranteed goals, so the score would have been a lot different than it actually was, but Regional goalie of the year. Yeah. Yeah. And so first team. First team. Yeah, baby. So yeah, it's just, I mean, it's nothing to be ashamed of. I mean they had a fantastic year, but now we know like where we have to be to get to that level to get to the, to regional championship. [00:12:56] Speaker A: Yeah. So yeah, a lot of injuries throughout the entire season. Not just in at the end, but I mean because we had to shift. [00:13:03] Speaker B: Our whole lineup during the game because we had to pull Josh back and then that took the ball out of the midfield. So yeah, play defender. [00:13:09] Speaker A: More specifically towards the end. Soccer team was really banged up. Even though we had a lot more depth this year than comparable to previous years. [00:13:15] Speaker B: Some key guys were. [00:13:17] Speaker A: But hopefully we can retain majority of the lineup and add some more recruits. Maybe if, you know, someone point them our way. But it was a great season. It was a really good season for the soccer team, our men's team. And it is, it's disappointing, it's sad. But there's also a lot of things to be proud of. Yes. Having double digits win. Double digit. Double digit wins in a season. [00:13:44] Speaker B: Runner up in the conference, both regular season and postseason. [00:13:46] Speaker A: Yep. And then making it being number two seed in regional play. And so much more to say. All the awards from our athletes that Matt mentioned earlier also speak for themselves. [00:13:58] Speaker B: Well, stop. 10 power ratings too, which is pretty impressive. [00:14:00] Speaker A: This is true. [00:14:02] Speaker B: What, number five in the nation. [00:14:04] Speaker A: Five in the nation at one point. At one point. And as well as eight, I believe. So great season for the men's soccer team. We thank you guys. Thank you. Will. Will's clapping back there and hopefully we got next year. You know, I, I said it, I told the guys multiple times, you have this year, you don't got next. Right. And it's sad to see Josh and Carlos and many others possibly leaving the field for Ema Seagulls. For them, they're graduating for, for others, it's, it's different. And we got next year. [00:14:40] Speaker B: Yeah, next year. [00:14:40] Speaker A: Yeah, next year we'll see. [00:14:41] Speaker B: Working the off season, putting that work in because we know where we have to get to to get to that level. [00:14:46] Speaker A: And then on the volleyball side of things. [00:14:47] Speaker B: Yep, volleyball side. They came As a one seed, they played in the. Against the playing game winner, which is Moody. Moody beat Maranatha. So we played Moody, swept them three zero and then waited for the winner of Grace and Great Lakes Grace ended up winning that game. And so we had beaten Grace 30 earlier in the year at Grace. This game was at Maranatha for the region. And man, we won the first set pretty handily, won the second set very handily. Got to the third set and we're one point away from winning the regional championship and just let it kind of slip away. [00:15:26] Speaker A: They were already in extra sets too. [00:15:28] Speaker B: And so let it slip away in that third set. Grace ended up coming and they got two straight points to win the third set. Won the fourth set. [00:15:37] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:15:38] Speaker B: And then won the fifth set. [00:15:39] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:15:39] Speaker B: To win the regional championship. And so. Yeah. But I mean on a bright side, Caitlyn Ran broke the school record for most set. Most kills in the. In a set or in a game. So that's a bright side. But man, it was just. Oh, they were like literally they were one point away from. From winning. [00:15:55] Speaker A: Crowd got up. They. Yeah. [00:15:58] Speaker B: Going to nationals. So I mean again, they were right there. They just tasted it and then they were in there for the. Potentially had an opportunity for the automatic bid because they're two automatic bids for regional or for nationals for volleyball. But due to the. A couple other teams that were involved that also were under consideration for the automatic bid, they did not get it this year. [00:16:21] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:16:22] Speaker B: Which goes to show that, you know, you have to win to guarantee your spot there. [00:16:27] Speaker A: So we were saying earlier, every game matters. Every game matters. If that's even conference to regionals to, you know, a team that might not be that good. Every game matters. It doesn't. It doesn't matter, you know, their reputation or their, or their record. [00:16:42] Speaker B: Yep. [00:16:43] Speaker A: You never know what could happen. [00:16:44] Speaker B: And this, this is a proof sports anything can happen. [00:16:46] Speaker A: This is a proof to it. And it's really sad. The, the girls. Girls are so disappointed and we know the, the coaches have put in so much work and all the players. So our hearts go out to them. Of course. But we know what they got and they know too. You know, they're right there still really young. [00:17:03] Speaker B: Yep. [00:17:04] Speaker A: And I'm. This just. This just makes them more hungry. It makes us more hungry for next year and kind of scares me. I know. [00:17:12] Speaker B: A little worried the bounce back that they're going to have next year. [00:17:15] Speaker A: Oh my. [00:17:16] Speaker B: We'll see. It's gonna be exciting. [00:17:18] Speaker A: It's. We. The thing is we know volleyball I trust volleyball to be back in the same position next year. Better and maybe even better. And we'll finish it. Finish it how they should have done it this year. And they know that they don't need to hear anything from us or anyone else. So let's just keep quiet, let them handle their business. [00:17:40] Speaker B: You know, you guys got it. [00:17:41] Speaker A: They got it. It's a business trip for them. And for 300, you know, 60 something days. Something days. All business. And they'll. They'll handle it. And I trust them completely. I trust Coach Hannah, Coach Meg to get that done. I do. [00:17:58] Speaker B: Yes. [00:17:58] Speaker A: Really, Truly. So, again, thank you guys so much for everything you have done. It was a great season. [00:18:04] Speaker B: What a year. It was. [00:18:05] Speaker A: Yeah. Full of laughter, full of excitement. [00:18:07] Speaker B: Wins this season. [00:18:08] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. [00:18:09] Speaker B: That's amazing. [00:18:11] Speaker A: Moving on though. [00:18:12] Speaker B: Yep. Looking at the last cross country race before the last fall sport. Yeah. So cross nothing will. [00:18:20] Speaker A: Nothing for them. The last fall sport. That's a lame one. [00:18:27] Speaker B: So cross country had a race up at Luther College, which is in Decor, Iowa, so about hour and a half north of us. Hour 15 depending how fast you drive looking at the scenery or slow. It was an all D3 race. So us and a bunch of Division 3 schools. The women ran a 6K, so obviously they run 5K at Nationals. We'll see what happens if that ends up being a 6k in the future. But during that 6k, Bria and Riley PR. Their 6k time, which was awesome. [00:18:57] Speaker A: Dogs. [00:18:57] Speaker B: And then on the men's side, within their 8K, they had three PRs. After Hanselman PR, Caleb Nespiard and Daniel PR. Great. And that got their team time up to I think 2:32, which puts us again at second in the nation, second in team time. So that was a good response. Anna didn't. Anna didn't run this race because she had clinicals. [00:19:21] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:19:21] Speaker B: But she'll be ready to go for nationals this week. [00:19:26] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:19:26] Speaker B: So it's good. A good five. [00:19:27] Speaker A: Jones is number one. Yeah. [00:19:28] Speaker B: Bob Jones is number one. So it's a good final. [00:19:31] Speaker A: Like pre championship race against D3 schools. We pretty much race the entire season. D3 NAI even occasionally, sometimes a D2 school. But that's very. That's pretty rare. But a lot of NAI and D3. So they look good. [00:19:47] Speaker B: Yeah, they look good. [00:19:48] Speaker A: Matthew. Matthew's looking strong at the end of the season. Hope hopefully having like a really full healthy roster. Going internationals. [00:19:55] Speaker B: Yes. [00:19:55] Speaker A: I know Will Kuranda might be racing. I think he is on the edge of it. [00:20:00] Speaker B: Not sure if Alice Hanselman will be racing for the. [00:20:02] Speaker A: Probably not out. Yeah, probably not Alice quite yet, but next season she's looking to make a bounce back. [00:20:07] Speaker B: Big opportunity for them. [00:20:08] Speaker A: Oh yeah, huge opportunity. And we, we knew the opportunity for a volleyball team and soccer team going into their regional play. And we know the opportunity for our cross country team and everybody know everybody for our man soccer team. We knew it was going to be tough. We knew Grace was good, but we knew it was either going to be us or them. [00:20:26] Speaker B: Yep. [00:20:28] Speaker A: And it was them. [00:20:29] Speaker B: Yep. [00:20:29] Speaker A: For volleyball we. We really thought it was going to be us. [00:20:32] Speaker B: Y. [00:20:32] Speaker A: You know, and the Lord humbled us and that is amazing. Thank you, Lord. And it was Grace. Grace won both and also had both. [00:20:43] Speaker B: MVPs of the region too. [00:20:44] Speaker A: Don't. Don't talk more. Don't talk. So cross country, your turn. [00:20:49] Speaker B: It is up to you. [00:20:51] Speaker A: Okay. No pressure. [00:20:52] Speaker B: Rip headphones. [00:20:54] Speaker A: Man. I love our cross country team. [00:20:56] Speaker B: Hopefully. Hopefully when Andy watched that, he didn't just scare him off the couch or something. [00:20:59] Speaker A: Yeah, he was taking a sip of his drink. [00:21:01] Speaker B: Oh, hopefully it didn't happen. [00:21:04] Speaker A: Oh, I hope it does. I hope I want to hear a story. Either way, we're looking forward. They're. Yeah, they're going to be taking off in around now. Probably now. Which is around 4pm Central Time. Wednesday, November. What's the date? 13th. [00:21:20] Speaker B: I think you will. [00:21:22] Speaker A: When November 13th. Gonna go to. I really like what they do for nationals. For cross country, it's more than just a race. They don't obviously drive hours on end to run a 20 to 30 minute. [00:21:35] Speaker B: Race and then drive all the way home. [00:21:38] Speaker A: They go there. What do they do, Matt? [00:21:39] Speaker B: Yeah, so it's really cool how the NCCA does it with all the national championship weeks is they go there, they have a worship. They usually have a message and a worship concert like the day two days before. And then they have a service project somewhere. So all the teams go out and have some sort of service project. I think it might be like two or three different things. So I think like one year they did like a canned food drive and so I went to like a food bank and like serve there where they do various different things and then they go out and then they compete on the Friday or Saturday. [00:22:11] Speaker A: So it's really, it's honestly it's a family community and it really, it really shows who we are. [00:22:15] Speaker B: You get to connect with other team players from or the runners from other. [00:22:18] Speaker A: Teams and especially smaller D2 schools being able to compete against one another. We know that a lot of These schools have great communities. [00:22:27] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:22:27] Speaker A: A grace Christ, a great Christ centered atmosphere that they, they have good doctrine. So it's, it's good for us to have that, that sweet fellowship. That sweet fellowship. And it is because, I mean we've talked about our experience in the past being on the men's soccer, men's basketball, part of their teams and fellowshiping, fellowshiping with the opposing team and then going to. And then competing against them on the field or on the court right after. It's awesome. It's great. And cross country really embodies that. And as they really do, we really talk about them as a team as a whole. Always being together, going over to either the Handleman's house, Gerardi's houses, or having a meal here on campus together, Bible studies as doing like even adventure, a lot of adventuring, hiking. So they are a family community. They really embody in a great example of Emmaus itself as an institution, but also of course for Christ. [00:23:19] Speaker B: Tight knit group of people. [00:23:20] Speaker A: Oh yeah. [00:23:21] Speaker B: All like each other. [00:23:22] Speaker A: Yeah. So I think I would, I would, I would assume all the other cross country teams are pretty hopefully similar, you. [00:23:28] Speaker B: Know, you would hope so. [00:23:29] Speaker A: And like they get a fellowship with one another, so it's gonna be sweet, sweet time for them. But we're hoping our men's team and women's team to finish strong. We know our runners. Our men's team has a great shot of finishing on the podium this year. So top three finish for men's team final. Last year Ozark had the fastest individual time. Yep. Individual runner for men's and Bob Jones won as team. So Bob Jones looking. They brought back majority of their runners last year. So they're good. They're really good. But also they didn't really run against a lot of our guys and a lot of the other newer teams, so. And we really knows what will happen. The favorite to win is. [00:24:14] Speaker B: Find out on Friday. [00:24:16] Speaker A: Yeah, Favorite to win is Bob Jones for sure. But you never know. Our favorite to win for a lot of other sports. You know, our volleyball team was favorite and technically Kuiper was favorite to win in soccer being the 1 seed. And then it went. So in the semis we'll see what the men's do. Matt, do you want to give them a quick kind of rundown of how the scoring will work individually as well as team? [00:24:41] Speaker B: Yes. So this is what we talked about last week with the conference and like the regional race was. It's not about your time. [00:24:49] Speaker A: Nope. Individually, yeah. [00:24:52] Speaker B: It's about where you finish and so it's like last year the team that finished second actually had the fourth fastest time and but they, but their runners finished in certain places that bumped them up. So the goal for this is to which we talked about last episode is like, you know, our one to six runners or one to five, it's a four minute gap which is, which is very minimal. Which is like what Bob Jones gap is. So that gives us a big advantage because if we go like 5, 6, 8, 20, that, that will bump our times up and our scores up. And so you want the lowest score and so it'll be placed on, you know, the team run. So like if there's a, if there's a school that's there that doesn't have a full team, let's say they had like three runners that qualified. From my understanding is those individual times won't count for the team time schools. [00:25:44] Speaker A: Okay, that's good. That's actually great information to know. So essentially wherever a runner is placed, that's the point they get. So if you placed ninth, that's nine points towards your team. It's golf setting golf rules. So lower the points the better. Yes. Bob Jones finished in the mid-20s last year at nationals, which was crazy. Then second place team was in the mid-80s. [00:26:10] Speaker B: Wild. [00:26:12] Speaker A: So who knows what's going to happen. Women. For our women's team. Same thing goes. Same thing goes. [00:26:20] Speaker B: Yeah, right now they, and right now they're at the. I think so men have the second fastest time right now. Women have the fifth fastest time. [00:26:27] Speaker A: So it is. Yeah, it's a. [00:26:30] Speaker B: And I believe top 10 that finish are all Americans. Yeah, that's the top 10 individuals. [00:26:35] Speaker A: It might be even 12. It's 12 because I think it was a weird number for Kate. [00:26:40] Speaker B: Finished 12 region, something like that. Yeah. [00:26:42] Speaker A: So it's uphill battle for our women's team for sure. They're, they play time wise they were I think ranked higher last year than this year. [00:26:51] Speaker B: So. [00:26:51] Speaker A: Yeah, but that doesn't mean really much. We've added a lot of, a lot of great talent this year. [00:26:58] Speaker B: PR and still like. [00:26:59] Speaker A: Yeah. It just means other teams are also growing. So we got to continue to grow as well on our team and our skill. So uh, but our women's team does look good. Uh, Kate's been killing it. Anna's really been doing great all year. She's been the leader of the women's team. So looking to see what she, how she finished the year. But that's, that's kind of the story of our team is how Will we finish? Yes. Right. We're not going to. You're not going to really know this for all sports. So you're not going to really know or talk about how the whole season went. It's about how you finish. [00:27:33] Speaker B: Yep. That's all that matters. [00:27:34] Speaker A: That's really. Yeah. All that matters when it comes to, you know, competing in sports is how you finish. And that goes, of course, the result also, you know, the testimony. Yep. So fall sports. Looking forward to it. [00:27:49] Speaker B: Thank you, guys. [00:27:49] Speaker A: All sports almost over. Cross country wrapping it up this week. Next week, we'll have a big trophy for you. I don't know, actually, but hopefully. But go kill it. Cross country. We love you guys. [00:28:01] Speaker B: Yes. [00:28:02] Speaker A: We know you might not feel like you're talked about a lot on this podcast. We love you, but we honestly, you. You guys are the most consistent and best right now. I. I love it. And you're still. You're still. You're competing still. [00:28:15] Speaker B: Yes. [00:28:15] Speaker A: So kill. Go kill it. Go proof. You know Matt wrong when he talks bad about. I'm joking. [00:28:20] Speaker B: What? [00:28:21] Speaker A: Joking. I'm joking. You're. Matt's gonna. Wow. He's gonna slap me after Will. [00:28:26] Speaker B: I'm going to. [00:28:27] Speaker A: He doesn't. Matt, does it? No. We do love cross country and we love everything you have done for Emmaus as well as just for. For the community here. [00:28:37] Speaker B: Again, shout out to Girardis because they have made such a significant impact on the school and on the cross country. [00:28:44] Speaker A: Every time we do talk about cross country, and it's always good. So I don't know what people talk about. I don't know why they. [00:28:50] Speaker B: Right. Yeah. [00:28:50] Speaker A: We have, like, so many, like, volleyball players that come up to us and just like, good job. [00:28:54] Speaker B: You talked for 2 minutes and 27.85 seconds about cross country. [00:28:58] Speaker A: Come on. No. [00:28:59] Speaker B: We race in three weeks. [00:29:01] Speaker A: So we love you guys. Don't listen to the haters. Listen to us, because you guys are. [00:29:05] Speaker B: The best Eagles right now. [00:29:07] Speaker A: We love you. [00:29:08] Speaker B: We do. [00:29:08] Speaker A: All right, moving on. Shane, Winter sports. [00:29:12] Speaker B: Basketball time. Here we go. [00:29:15] Speaker A: Basketball is my favorite sport. [00:29:16] Speaker B: I love the way that you dribble the ball up and down the court. [00:29:19] Speaker A: Thank you. [00:29:20] Speaker B: Oh, you're welcome. [00:29:21] Speaker A: That's cool. So we started. We started. I'm a little taught for basketball. Look at me as he's the assistant coach. I know it all, so sure. The basketball teams are both men's and women's team have started. They've had both three games this season. Men's team is 1 and 2 2. Women's team is 0 and 3. But our women's team is lacking in numbers. Not a lot of depth on the bench when it comes to substitution, et cetera. So they've played really well for not having any depth. They've played actually, they played excellent not having any depth, I would say, for what they can bring, what they bring to the court, being in every single game. Being in every single game. So shout out to the players, shout out to Cody and the staff for really preparing our women's team for all these games. I think everyone has, was really surprised knowing that there, there wasn't a lot of incoming students joining a women's basketball team. And it was. [00:30:26] Speaker B: Or if we were going to have a team, to be honest, it was. [00:30:28] Speaker A: Really rough for sure. And seeing what they've been able to do is really encouraging. I know, I know the record isn't, isn't nice at all, but seeing how we're only losing by, you know, single digits in most of the games is very encouraging. You get, you got anything? [00:30:46] Speaker B: I was like, I was letting the professional. Oh my. Yeah, yeah, yeah. [00:30:50] Speaker A: So that's on the women's side. [00:30:51] Speaker B: So, yeah, talking about women's basketball. Yeah, it's been, you know, this is Coach Canard's coach Cody Canard, alumni of the school, his first year taking over the program. They have six girls right now, seven when cross country is done. And man, Cody has really prepared these girls. Like you said, a lot of unknown going in the season just because, you know, low numbers. But he is, he's putting each woman in position to succeed and I love it. And yeah, off the bat they play, they played Trinity twice and then they played Mount Mary, which is a D3 in Wisconsin. And so first game of the season, I mean, we end up, we lost 67 to 59, but we had a 12 point lead going into the fourth quarter. [00:31:32] Speaker A: Yeah, they looked really good. [00:31:33] Speaker B: It was, it, what it came down to was we have five players that play 40 minutes a game. [00:31:37] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:31:38] Speaker B: And it was just stamina at the end, but they were right there. And it's like, you know, it stinks that you lost that 12 point lead. Ended up losing by what, eight. But like they're right there, like they are going to win some games. They're gonna surprise a lot of people this year because the, the five starters that they have, you know, they are, they're really playing well. I mean, and then the second, the next day they played Trinity again, you know, lost 6155. And then when they played Mount Marine, lost by four so they're there in every single game. Some highlights right now. Shane Aaron McKenna, sixth in the nation in scoring. [00:32:18] Speaker A: That's my applicant. [00:32:19] Speaker B: And Rachel Barrett, number one in the NCCAA and rebounding dog. Crazy. She's had a 15 rebound game, a 20 rebound game. [00:32:30] Speaker A: That's crazy. [00:32:30] Speaker B: And 17 rebound or 19 rebound game or sorry, 17 rebound game. Which is crazy. [00:32:36] Speaker A: Yeah. Rachel being a dual athlete, choosing to stay with basketball this season and really focus on that. It shows, it shows. So I'm looking forward, I mean the. [00:32:44] Speaker B: Second game of the year she had 17 points and 20 rebounds. [00:32:48] Speaker A: Crazy. Aaron is only a sophomore too. And she's, she's quick. [00:32:52] Speaker B: She is, she's like, she's like, yeah, she's, she's improved so much from last year and like she, I mean the sky's the limit for her. She's going to be a great. [00:33:00] Speaker A: I might have said this on the podcast before, but I give out a, if you come on a guest visit and you're, and I'm running your visit, I give out a scholarship, the Douglas foundation scholarship. I should make it a super long title. Essentially if you, I give you one three point shot and if you make it, it's your first shot. [00:33:19] Speaker B: Colton gives you a hundred dollars. [00:33:20] Speaker A: I'll give you a hundred dollars if you come to me. So you walk through that door. The only person who has ever made it is Aaron McKenna. And typically I don't run the athletes so that's great because I would be. [00:33:28] Speaker B: Like, I mean you've done like 30, you've had like 35 people at least do it and only one person's made it. [00:33:34] Speaker A: And the men's basketball team was watching too. So she had the pressure. Yeah, she sank it. So. [00:33:39] Speaker B: Yeah, so they've, I mean, yeah, 0 and 3. But like nothing to be ashamed of. They've been playing, they're playing well. And for having five girls that play 40 minutes a game. [00:33:47] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:33:48] Speaker B: And also crazy thing, Jenna Law said her had 19 rebounds against Mount Mary Dog. That's crazy. [00:33:53] Speaker A: They're just all, they're all balling out because I mean they are. It comes with a lot of trust knowing that you don't have a lot of depth. Knowing that this might be your last. [00:34:00] Speaker B: Season was like you can't get stupid fouls, you can't swing at stuff you can't swipe. Like you have to play very smart. And I think they, I think they've only had one person foul out. And so, and that was in the second game. [00:34:12] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:34:12] Speaker B: And so, but yeah, and They've learned from there. Shoot. [00:34:15] Speaker A: We can't do that again. [00:34:16] Speaker B: We can't take those chances. [00:34:17] Speaker A: But like, the more, the more the players get to know Cody and staff and then learn to trust the coach. And then same with Cody Kenard with his players and they really come together. This season. I'm, I'm interested to see how the community forms because we haven't. [00:34:30] Speaker B: Because Cody's new, especially when Kate comes back from cross country and joins the team. So. Yeah. [00:34:34] Speaker A: So a really huge boost. I'm really excited to see how. How the girls, the women's team has formed as a community, as a culture and how Cody and. And staff has really helped that. [00:34:47] Speaker B: Yes. [00:34:48] Speaker A: So. [00:34:48] Speaker B: So, yeah, because. [00:34:49] Speaker A: Because the women's culture has always been great for basketball team. They've always had a lot of discipleship, mentorship, and really just a sisterhood. So. [00:34:56] Speaker B: And a fair amount of success too, especially mid-2010s. [00:34:59] Speaker A: That's true. So keep an eye out for. [00:35:02] Speaker B: Yeah. But they're on the road a lot. They don't have a home game until December 14th. [00:35:08] Speaker A: That's really tough. Yeah, that's really tough. So I, I'm looking. I haven't seen a game yet because I've been traveling so much, unlike you. So. [00:35:15] Speaker B: Yeah, so there'll be a lot unlike me. Yeah, right. [00:35:18] Speaker A: Yeah. The podcast shows. [00:35:21] Speaker B: The podcast shows. [00:35:23] Speaker A: I've missed the road 3. You've missed one. [00:35:27] Speaker B: I also have a seniority because I've. [00:35:28] Speaker A: Been doing this job that doesn't mean nothing. Four times seniority. I don't want to go on the trip. That's laziness. [00:35:33] Speaker B: I don't want to go on the trip. I advance basketball games. Shane Douglas. [00:35:36] Speaker A: Hey, we're not. [00:35:37] Speaker B: Sounds like there's a little man. We need to have Dr. Broussard in here with his hostilities. Traveling. [00:35:41] Speaker A: Shout out to Dr. D1 referee. [00:35:44] Speaker B: 15 years. Dog. [00:35:46] Speaker A: He's a dog. [00:35:47] Speaker B: So speaking of traveling and getting home last night at 1am but we won't talk. [00:35:52] Speaker A: Way to throw that in there. [00:35:53] Speaker B: So. So men's basketball. Yeah. So we are two. We are one and two right now. So our first game of the season, we played the Spurgeon Knights. Spurgeon was the third ranked team last year. They have a very unique physical play style and boy, we got. We got a little banged up. We had two guys that got ankles hurt and had to miss the next two games. But they, I mean they are a fine, oiled machine. Yeah, we lost, you know, 117 to 83. Tatum did score 20 points before he got hit and then got hurt. Full, full court. Full court press all 40 minutes. Yeah, it's crazy. And I think they had like almost 40 fouls called against them. [00:36:34] Speaker A: But you guys were. [00:36:34] Speaker B: Because their mindset is we're going to foul you and the refs are only going to call a certain amount. And so. Yeah, and so like they'll full court press. They'll value all the game long and. [00:36:42] Speaker A: Honestly, it's not a bad strategy. [00:36:44] Speaker B: No, honestly, it's not. Especially if you have the depth. I mean, they have like, they can play like 18 guys. So like. [00:36:48] Speaker A: Yeah, and like some of those guys are starting five, so. [00:36:50] Speaker B: Yep. Yeah, I think they had four guys or five guys foul out. [00:36:55] Speaker A: That's crazy. [00:36:55] Speaker B: It is. [00:36:55] Speaker A: That is wild. [00:36:56] Speaker B: Yeah. So that was a big first game of the year. And then we follow that up with Trinity. [00:37:01] Speaker A: But you guys were in it. You guys were in it the first half. [00:37:04] Speaker B: I mean, we were in it the first, you know, 12 minutes and then. [00:37:06] Speaker A: That's a long game. Yeah, so many fouls. [00:37:09] Speaker B: The game lasted like two hours and 15 minutes. It was like the two and a half hours. The longest basketball game ever. He shot 46 free throws into the game. But yeah, then Trinity bounce back. We played them on Saturday, a couple days after. Obviously we didn't have Tatum and they didn't have one their starters because apparently they went to who hot the night before the game and got food poisoning. So they were battling food poisoning, which is. [00:37:32] Speaker A: They all had their MJ game. [00:37:34] Speaker B: I know. Yeah. I mean, they are. They have. They have this. They have a transfer number three for them, Jonathan. And he played for a division one juco in California. What people talk about is the hardest non division one basketball conference like in the US and he, he's really good. [00:37:55] Speaker A: They have two guys and he was from Kansas. [00:37:57] Speaker B: And then they have it. No, he's not. He's from California. [00:37:59] Speaker A: My bad. [00:37:59] Speaker B: And then he had. And then they have Marcellus, who's their fifth year returning, all leading scorer. And they're going to be good this year. And they. We, statistically, we. We had 18 offensive rebounds, we had 18 assists. We only had 11 turnovers, but we shot horrendously. We shot 30 and 23% from the field. And you're not going to. And you're not going to win a game. And we took more shots than they did too, which was, you know, usually the team that takes the more shots wins, but we, that's funny. Just did not shoot the ball well at all. And so we lost that game. 93, 68. If we had shot, you know, just a little bit better, you know, we, I mean, it was. We were up 21:17 with 10 minutes to go in the game, or, sorry, 10 minutes to go in the first half. And then they just went on a run because they made those shots that we didn't make. We struggled to guard the ball, but we're going to get better at that. And so, you know, that was, that was a little disappointing. You know, Nash didn't have a good game, but he had a really good bounce back game on Tuesday. And so we worked on Monday and then we traveled up to Chicago on Tuesday where we got to play our rival, our regional rival, our school rival. As you know, we were in Oak Park, Chicago for many, many years, close to Moody. And it was, it was a crazy game. It was a fun game. Yeah, we ended up pulling out the victory. Yeah, we won 82.78. I mean, the, it was, I mean, I this. I looked at the stats afterwards and they said there were 17 lead changes. That's a lot. [00:39:36] Speaker A: That's too much. [00:39:37] Speaker B: That's a lot. And so, you know, we won by four. The guys held it out at the end. It was fun because we had three families there and we had 11 students that drove. [00:39:49] Speaker A: I know, I noticed that. [00:39:50] Speaker B: I know. It was crazy. And so, yes. Jennica. Shout out. Jennica Beach. Michelle Striley. Lindsey McElveen. Ali Hunter L. Swartverger. Lily Holton. Lily Cook, Cheyenne Caniglio. And then Lucas, Leslie and Edwin. [00:40:08] Speaker A: That's ten. [00:40:08] Speaker B: The. [00:40:09] Speaker A: The. Ed Ventura. That's ten. You said eleven. [00:40:12] Speaker B: Who did I miss? [00:40:12] Speaker A: Oh, this is, this is why. You never should have done that. You never should have done that. [00:40:17] Speaker B: Oh, Emma Sand. Emma Sand. Shout out. Shout out. Scorp. And so, yeah, it was really cool. We. They came and supported us and, you know, it was a fun game. You know, first game, I think Tatum had 20. Second game, Josh had 18. And then Josh Stewart went off against moody. He had 21 points and Nash had 19, nine rebounds and seven assists. He was on triple double watch. And so it's great to have that first win of the year and then, you know, to have that momentum carrying into this weekend. When we play on Saturday, you know, Lord Willen will have Tatum back, which is going to be a huge boost. [00:40:52] Speaker A: And so you play this Saturday. [00:40:53] Speaker B: We play Northland College, our Division 3, actually. Next two games are against D3s. Yep. Home at a mayest. And then we play next Tuesday against Maranatha Girls. Don't Have a game for like till next Saturday. [00:41:05] Speaker A: They don't play this weekend. [00:41:05] Speaker B: They don't play. They don't play for like 14 days. [00:41:09] Speaker A: Okay. [00:41:09] Speaker B: Yeah. So they don't play till now, this upcoming Saturday, but the falling Saturday before Thanksgiving break. And so yeah, I mean that's literally all we have until. Until next episode is those two games. So we're excited. It should be, it should be fun. [00:41:21] Speaker A: It's really great. [00:41:22] Speaker B: The guys got that first win and it was, it was a great team win and you know, we can, we can carry this momentum going forward and work on the things we need to work on. But see the things that like we were able to score the basketball which was amazing. We just got to defend the basketball now. [00:41:34] Speaker A: It's going to be a little quiet as fall sports comes to a close this weekend with cross country and we transition to basketball season as first semester basketball. Not many games. Not too many. [00:41:48] Speaker B: So 10 or so. Yeah. [00:41:49] Speaker A: So we'll talk more come January semester six. [00:41:55] Speaker B: Seven. [00:41:56] Speaker A: Seven. [00:41:56] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:41:57] Speaker A: So we'll have a lot to talk about with basketball in the upcoming games for sure. Upcoming season. More. More so right now. But it's exciting. I mean the men's team, I know what you were just talking about with the men's team and kind of some disappointment appointments and not, not hitting the potential here and there and all the turnovers or rebounding issues and of course you guys are a new team pretty much completely. [00:42:21] Speaker B: Our first two games of the year were against two, you know, nationally ranked teams too. [00:42:25] Speaker A: Yeah. So given that you guys were really. [00:42:27] Speaker B: In the game, kind of like how coach Hannah scheduled the volleyball season to start. Yeah. [00:42:31] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:42:31] Speaker B: So coach Parker did the same. [00:42:32] Speaker A: I'm excited to see how the guys really form together. The culture is created. You guys learn more how to play with each other, sharpen you got the skills and the tendencies to not turn over the ball to get a board, especially an offensive board or a defensive board. [00:42:52] Speaker B: So basketball. [00:42:53] Speaker A: Yeah. Put the ball in the basket. In the basket. [00:42:58] Speaker B: Crazy how simple the game.
