Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: Undefeated at home.
[00:00:01] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:00:01] Speaker A: We'll see if that continues.
[00:00:02] Speaker B: First time ever. Undefeated at home.
[00:00:05] Speaker A: Let's go crazy.
[00:00:11] Speaker B: And welcome back to the official Emmaus Athletic Podcast. In the nest. I'm your co host, Shane Douglas, here with Matthew Thomason, the loyal as always, Matthew.
[00:00:23] Speaker A: Hi.
[00:00:23] Speaker B: Good to be back.
[00:00:24] Speaker A: Good to be back.
[00:00:25] Speaker B: Missed the last episode. Was on the road as usual, but.
[00:00:30] Speaker A: Watching lots and lots of soccer. You were.
[00:00:32] Speaker B: Yeah. We're at a homeschool national soccer tournament down there in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was a good trip. Lots of soccer. That was watched.
[00:00:41] Speaker A: Probably good food eating as well.
[00:00:43] Speaker B: Food is all right. Food is all right. Not. Not too crazy.
[00:00:45] Speaker A: Too crazy. Okay.
[00:00:46] Speaker B: Not too crazy. But it was. It was a good trip. It was a good trip. But it's good to be back. It's always good to be home, back here in Dubuque, around the friends, family and everything. But it's been crazy for athletics, man. It's been a good season. We're coming to the close for our men's and women's cross country, soccer and volleyball teams. So really, it's kind of sad.
[00:01:11] Speaker A: It is.
[00:01:11] Speaker B: It's kind of sad.
[00:01:12] Speaker A: Regular season is done pretty much on the postseason. It's crazy how fast the time went.
[00:01:16] Speaker B: Yeah. So men's and women's cross country still have a couple weeks. They've already ran their regionals.
[00:01:22] Speaker A: Did very well.
[00:01:23] Speaker B: Did very well ever. I like, I feel like I haven't talked about it, but we've talked about it last. Or you talked about last podcast. But they did very well. Should have gotten first.
[00:01:33] Speaker A: Should have gotten first.
[00:01:33] Speaker B: Should have gotten first. But it's all right.
[00:01:35] Speaker A: And again, like we talked about, that's the exciting thing with this Nationals race is the time difference between or the placement difference between our top five runners is very small compared to the other teams that were running. So with full teams running at nationals, there's a very good chance.
[00:01:52] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, it was a great. It was a very important race for our men's and women's cross country team to run.
[00:01:57] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:01:57] Speaker B: To see where they stand against our opponents.
[00:02:01] Speaker A: You kept bringing up our competition runners at our level.
[00:02:04] Speaker B: And so Crown. Crown looked really good on the men's and women's side of things. And kind of scary to imagine what Bob Jones will be like.
[00:02:12] Speaker A: Right.
[00:02:12] Speaker B: But we'll find that out in a couple weeks and we'll talk more about that in the upcoming episodes. But for this episode, we are going to really recap a little bit of men's and men's soccer, women's volleyball for the Last week as well as this upcoming tournament.
[00:02:31] Speaker A: Let's go.
[00:02:31] Speaker B: We have the MCCC tournament this weekend. So repetitive cccc but yep, looking forward to that. But Matt, how did, how did we fare the last week?
[00:02:42] Speaker A: Yes. So looking at soccer. So they had. Of both team. Both teams had big games. Yes. This past weekend and looking at soccer. So we played Manhattan at home and then we traveled down to Faith to play Barclay at neutral site. So first time playing Manhattan, it was a great game. They are a tough team. Ended in a 11 draw.
[00:03:00] Speaker B: Sucks.
[00:03:01] Speaker A: It did. We had, we had too many draws. I know we had, we had a shot at the end to win, but couldn't quite pull it out. But we were like literally this close from as the buzzer went off to winning. And so going into that game, I mean both teams played really well.
Our guys fought hard. They did not take, they did not step back from the challenge of Manhattan because Manhattan's always a good physical team. It was nice seeing coach Lopez shout out Coach Lopez who was on campus. We got our co. Coffee. Great catching up with him.
[00:03:30] Speaker B: Coach, I've only, I don't think I've said I get coffee once with. Yeah, I got coffee once with coach Lopez. But you, you and Coach Lopez always be me and up down there in Manhattan or even I guess you're there.
[00:03:41] Speaker A: On last time in spirit.
[00:03:42] Speaker B: It's true. I was.
[00:03:43] Speaker A: But so it's good seeing them and then. Yeah. And then on Saturday was to determine the regular season conference champions.
[00:03:50] Speaker B: And because I just for mathematical purposes, because we went into the game with technically undefeated in conference and against Barclay on Saturday, Barclay also being undefeated. But the difference was that we had one tie against the conference team. So we needed a win for a banner. Barclay needed a win or a tie for a banner.
[00:04:16] Speaker A: And good fight game. Carlos scored within like three minutes right off the bat. It was super exciting. Shout out Carlos.
[00:04:24] Speaker B: Man, you time that very well. You saw him doing that.
[00:04:27] Speaker A: So that was really good. But then Barkley came back and had like a crazy goal to tie it.
[00:04:33] Speaker B: It was a very, it was.
[00:04:34] Speaker A: And we, yeah, we had some opportunities to take the lead after that to go up 2, 1. Just could not quite get the ball into the net.
It was, it was, it was a good game.
[00:04:47] Speaker B: It was tough.
[00:04:47] Speaker A: It was. They ended up getting a red card because one of their, their, one of their guys went for a ball. Basically as three seconds were left in the half, the ball was in our box edit Evan went to head it and the guy swung his leg up and kicked Evan in The head.
[00:05:03] Speaker B: And it was on accident.
[00:05:04] Speaker A: It was on accident. It was not. It wasn't a bad play. Yeah, Barclays going for it.
[00:05:07] Speaker B: But Evan Barclays player like, like, ran to Evans, like, what?
[00:05:11] Speaker A: Nothing malicious. It was just an accident. And it's tough.
[00:05:15] Speaker B: It was tough. And like, poor Evan, like, it really hit him right here.
[00:05:18] Speaker A: I know he.
[00:05:19] Speaker B: And, oh, he, like, went to the hospital. It was like. It was pretty scary situation, but he's. He's doing better.
[00:05:24] Speaker A: Immediately FaceTime Sharon, when it happened, and she, like, put the phone up to Evan and I was like, dude, hang in there, please.
[00:05:30] Speaker B: Yeah, it was. It was really scary for Evan and friends and family. Yeah. But he's doing well, so keep him in your prayers.
[00:05:36] Speaker A: He's back in his dorm, so on campus under supervision because concussion, Concussions are no joke.
[00:05:41] Speaker B: I know everyone on the soccer team.
[00:05:43] Speaker A: Has gotten a concussion this year so far.
[00:05:45] Speaker B: Crazy. I know doesn't happen a lot in previous years, but it's sad, sad to see, you know, that play because now.
[00:05:53] Speaker A: That affects the rest of the year because he's out for the year. So that's going to affect this conference tournament, regional tournament. But yeah. So going back, couldn't. We missed some opportunities there to take the lead to win, but ended up in a 11 draw.
[00:06:05] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:06:06] Speaker A: So we finished second in the regular season.
[00:06:09] Speaker B: It's all right.
[00:06:10] Speaker A: But still second place, pretty good. I mean, undefeated. Undefeated in conference.
[00:06:13] Speaker B: Technically.
[00:06:14] Speaker A: Technically undefeated. 302.
[00:06:15] Speaker B: The fact that we gotta say technically.
[00:06:16] Speaker A: Technically, yeah, we did not lose in conference this year.
[00:06:20] Speaker B: We. We. We drew twice.
[00:06:21] Speaker A: But I mean, like, we, like we were saying beforehand, like, the top four teams. So, you know, Barclay, us, Manhattan and Faith, like, we all played each other this past weekend and it was three ties and 110 win. Like anything can happen. This tournament, it's crazy.
[00:06:37] Speaker B: And this tournament is actually. And we'll talk about this on the women's volleyball side as well. But I think this speaks more for men's soccer specifically. It's more important than a lot of past tournaments.
[00:06:51] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:06:51] Speaker B: Typically, this tournament is a great. The MCCC tournament is a great way to get a banner or to have something to show to be able to schedule a lot of ma, like, matchups within the season.
But this year for our men's soccer team, we have a tough region that we have to go through to make it to Nationals. We will talk about this more. We have a tough first opponent game against Grace, who we lost to Handily early in the season. And then if we make it past Grace, we'll Have to make it past Great Lakes or Kuiper or Maranatha, who are all tough opponents.
[00:07:28] Speaker A: Anyone can win the region too, but.
[00:07:29] Speaker B: So the region is already tough enough. We have been ranked fifth in the nation.
[00:07:34] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:07:35] Speaker B: And we've been ranked what, eighth in the nation. For soccer. We have a good record finishing the season nine. What are we? Nine, five and three.
For our boys. For our men's soccer team to get, there's two at large bids to go to nationals. For us to get an at large bid, mathematically speaking, we need to play not just well, but perfect.
[00:07:58] Speaker A: Great. Yes.
[00:07:59] Speaker B: Honestly, like. Like just.
[00:08:00] Speaker A: We can win both as well and win and bring home the conference championship. Like you said, that will greatly. Greatly get our odds up for. For the bid.
[00:08:10] Speaker B: The easiest.
[00:08:10] Speaker A: If we don't win.
[00:08:11] Speaker B: Exactly. The easiest way to make it to nationals. A win.
[00:08:14] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:08:15] Speaker B: Right. And we'll talk more about that with our women's volleyball team because they have a. Not an easy path. No path is easy. But it. Things look great. Pretty good based off of their. The regional record. But for men's soccer or men's soccer. Exactly. Our men's soccer team, we need to. They need to win this weekend especially.
[00:08:36] Speaker A: Which they are very capable of.
[00:08:37] Speaker B: They need to beat Barclay. We need to beat Barclay. Is a. It looks good that we were able to tie, but it will look better if we can beat them this weekend as they were making.
[00:08:47] Speaker A: They were top 10 team right now.
[00:08:49] Speaker B: Win a game at region. If we can win a game at regionals, win our conference tournament, it's going to look better for us to get at large bid. If we don't win at all. If we don't win in regionals, it's going to look better because right now it's going to be very close and I can't. I don't know. I don't have the numbers. But it doesn't look. It doesn't look like we can just coast. We cannot coast.
[00:09:11] Speaker A: We need to show up and show out.
[00:09:13] Speaker B: We need to beat Manhattan, we need to beat Barclay and we need to show up at regionals.
[00:09:19] Speaker A: The best part about regionals is you can end someone's season.
[00:09:22] Speaker B: Yeah, that's true.
[00:09:24] Speaker A: You can end someone's season.
[00:09:25] Speaker B: That's true.
[00:09:25] Speaker A: And what better way for. We'll talk about this next week, but what better way to end the host season next week? Yeah, that'd be crazy.
[00:09:33] Speaker B: It'd be really crazy.
But we'll talk more. Like you said, more about next week.
[00:09:38] Speaker A: Yeah. Huge, huge weekend this weekend. Because I don't Think we've. We've never, we've never won the postseason championship. Correct. For soccer.
[00:09:47] Speaker B: No, we have.
[00:09:48] Speaker A: We have.
[00:09:48] Speaker B: So 2018 won regular season champions as well as tournament champions.
[00:09:53] Speaker A: So if this team is who we talked about. Yeah, if they're up there with that 2018 team, better go win the conference championship.
[00:09:59] Speaker B: So what it looks like for their men's soccer tournament this weekend for MCCC is CCC Emmaus. Our Emmaus men's soccer team is, is the two seed playing the three seed Manhatt. They will be playing Friday at 3:00pm.
[00:10:16] Speaker A: And conference for soccer is at Ozark in Joplin, Missouri.
[00:10:19] Speaker B: So they'll be playing on. I think they got Bermuda grass, but it's like a sponge because they, they don't cut it too.
They don't. I'm not going to say they don't cut it enough, but they don't cut it short enough. So it's kind of spongy, but it's still, it's still like the field. It's good grass, but yeah, either way. So playing at Ozark number two against number three, Manhattan. It's always fun to play against Manhattan.
I think they play at 3 o'clock.
[00:10:46] Speaker A: I believe so.
[00:10:47] Speaker B: Yes. I'm not sure actually. There's no, no times on it. There's no times on it. So we have no idea. I was looking at regionals. So we have no idea what time they play. But they are game.
What number are we? 2.
[00:11:00] Speaker A: We're game three or game three?
[00:11:02] Speaker B: Game three.
[00:11:03] Speaker A: We're the last game of the day.
[00:11:04] Speaker B: Because last game of the day, day one, we will play game three, which will be a Friday. So we do Play Friday. Game 1 winner moves on to the championship on Saturday. The winner against Barclay Faith. Barclay and Faith just played off this last weekend.
[00:11:18] Speaker A: Barclay one one zero.
[00:11:19] Speaker B: Barclay one one zero. I mean face a good team, but.
[00:11:22] Speaker A: Also because the guy that got the red card for Barclays, their best player, their midfielder, their captain. So they're going to be down one of their best players the first game.
[00:11:30] Speaker B: But he'll be there for the championship. So we'll see what, what Manhattan can do. Whether we able or Faith and Manhattan and Eagles and Barkley, I guess all of us. It's exciting. It is exciting.
[00:11:41] Speaker A: It's a real exciting. Shane.
[00:11:42] Speaker B: It is. So we'll see what the men can do on soccer side. We'll talk about regionals next week. But they gotta win. They gotta win.
[00:11:50] Speaker A: So win.
[00:11:51] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:11:52] Speaker A: Let's go boys. Let's go, men.
[00:11:53] Speaker B: For men's Eagles, there We go. So for women's volleyball. Yes, women's volleyball. How'd they fare this last weekend?
[00:11:59] Speaker A: So Friday night was the matchup of the year. Two top ten teams playing each other. Number six Manhattan. Number eight, Emmaus University.
For both teams undefeated in conference. So this was for the regular season conference championship. And we played them that night, fought hard but man, Manhattan is. They're good. Yeah, they're very good. Manhattan ended up beating us 3, 0 to take the conference championship.
[00:12:31] Speaker B: And the team played well.
[00:12:33] Speaker A: The team played very well. But Manhattan is just very good. Caitlin was a little sick, a little sickness going around. But then the girls turned around and played Barkley on Saturday and took care of business. They had a very good bounce back game and dominated 3 0.
[00:12:48] Speaker B: And that's good.
[00:12:49] Speaker A: But yeah. So then with that, that puts your Emmaus volleyball team as the number two seed. Will be playing runner up.
[00:12:57] Speaker B: Runner up of the season.
[00:12:58] Speaker A: Up of the season. So great job ladies. Great job ladies. We will be taking on the seven seed CCCB and then on. I think it's at 1:00 on Friday.
[00:13:10] Speaker B: Yeah, 1:00pm Friday. Emmaus versus Central.
[00:13:14] Speaker A: And then. And then when we win, we'll play the winner of Calvary.
[00:13:18] Speaker B: Wow, you say when we will. When we win.
[00:13:20] Speaker A: When we win we'll winner of Calvary.
[00:13:21] Speaker B: And Faith if Emmaus wins. Yeah. We will play the winner of Calvary.
[00:13:24] Speaker A: That would be 7pm Yep.
[00:13:25] Speaker B: And award ceremony is right after the our game at 1. So award ceremony around 3pm Friday. Find out which one of our multiple or singular women's players get an award. First team, let's go.
[00:13:42] Speaker A: Come on, let's see it.
[00:13:43] Speaker B: MVP maybe. I don't know.
[00:13:45] Speaker A: We'll find out.
[00:13:46] Speaker B: I guess we will.
[00:13:47] Speaker A: We'll find out.
[00:13:48] Speaker B: That'd be great.
[00:13:49] Speaker A: But we get a host conference volleyball this year so that's super exciting on our home court. Haven't hosted conference volleyball since 2017. Oh, that's so good to have everyone back. I know.
[00:13:58] Speaker B: So long.
[00:13:58] Speaker A: I don't know what happened. I don't know.
[00:14:00] Speaker B: I feel like what.
[00:14:01] Speaker A: But we got a bad.
[00:14:02] Speaker B: What kind of rotation is this?
Oh, okay.
[00:14:05] Speaker A: But yeah, so super exciting with that. That'll be good.
And again like they again undefeated the regular season. So obviously can't take anything for granted in. In postseason because honestly anything can happen in postseason. But they take care of business. Should be a rematch from Friday in the championship on Saturday of us versus Manhattan.
[00:14:27] Speaker B: Yeah. And we. I wanna, I really want to see our women's team play Manhattan again because I feel like I mean, we'll see what, what it shapes up re. What regional shapes up to be in what national ends up. I, I do believe Manhattan will be at nationals and I do believe we will be at national. So who, who knows if we pair up there, right?
[00:14:47] Speaker A: So. But it, it has happened in the past, our teams competing at nationals.
[00:14:51] Speaker B: So I want to see our women's team healthy, play another strong game because.
[00:14:56] Speaker A: They were there for regionals, which then will help prepare us for nationals.
[00:15:01] Speaker B: So we play women's volleyball, will play Central. Men's soccer will play Manhattan. Manhattan. And we'll see what happens.
[00:15:10] Speaker A: Right.
[00:15:11] Speaker B: You know, try to get to that championship. Women's volleyball team needs to play, Play two games, win two games makes a championship. Men's just need to win one game makes it a championship. Both of our wives are calling us.
[00:15:20] Speaker A: I know, right?
[00:15:21] Speaker B: Kind of funny. Our phones are right here. They're both. Yeah, that's funny. I don't know why you're recording at.
[00:15:28] Speaker A: A different time than normal.
[00:15:30] Speaker B: That's true. We are. We are.
[00:15:32] Speaker A: So two tremendous opportunities for your Eagles this weekend.
[00:15:37] Speaker B: Spooky season. That's what it is. Hopefully our teams can.
[00:15:41] Speaker A: Boo.
[00:15:41] Speaker B: Thank you. Yeah, hopefully our teams can take away a W this weekend.
Lots of home court for women's volleyball, which is going to be huge.
[00:15:50] Speaker A: Hopefully we get five W's this weekend.
[00:15:51] Speaker B: We need our fans, our alum to show up, come on out, come support.
[00:15:56] Speaker A: Your lady Eagles volleyball, man. Cuz they've had such a tremendous year. Undefeated at home.
[00:16:02] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:16:03] Speaker A: We'll see if that. First time, first time ever. Undefeated ever. Let's go crazy.
[00:16:08] Speaker B: Crazy.
[00:16:08] Speaker A: And we're hosting.
[00:16:09] Speaker B: That's crazy, man. It's gonna be.
What have we.
[00:16:14] Speaker A: And also.
[00:16:14] Speaker B: Oh, that's gonna be tough.
[00:16:15] Speaker A: Women's volleyball has 17 wins this year, which is the most since 2019.
[00:16:20] Speaker B: It's gonna crazy. That is crazy as well. Crazy for us to. Are we going to take an account like the tournament for our home seas or home record?
[00:16:31] Speaker A: I don't know. Maybe. We'll see how. We'll see what happens if we win it all.
[00:16:35] Speaker B: We do.
[00:16:35] Speaker A: Yeah, we do. Yeah. If we go 3 0, then yes. If we don't know, 120 at home.
[00:16:39] Speaker B: Tournament doesn't count regular season.
[00:16:41] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:16:42] Speaker B: You know, get that like the star thing, right? Just like the Lakers championship.
[00:16:47] Speaker A: Oh yeah.
[00:16:48] Speaker B: You know, it's funny, like this is so off topic, but I do not like the Los Angeles Lakers. I do not like the Los Angeles Dodgers. I love the Los Angeles Chargers.
[00:16:57] Speaker A: That's so interesting, Shane.
[00:16:58] Speaker B: I was Just thinking about that this morning, I'm like, man, I, I.
[00:17:00] Speaker A: Why?
[00:17:01] Speaker B: Because The Dodgers are up 3 0.
[00:17:03] Speaker A: They're about to win the world.
[00:17:04] Speaker B: So dumb. Ooh, Shohei. Don't like Shohei. Freddie Freeman.
[00:17:09] Speaker A: That $1 million contract for this year.
[00:17:11] Speaker B: Stupid. I don't like. Yeah, I. It's crazy.
[00:17:14] Speaker A: It's crazy that I'm like those two teams. But you're.
[00:17:17] Speaker B: It's like I could care less about the Clippers, so. Yeah.
[00:17:20] Speaker A: So, yeah.
[00:17:21] Speaker B: But it's just like, what is crazy is that I'm cheering for the Yankees. Like, the Yankees.
[00:17:27] Speaker A: As a Suzuki fan. As a Boston fan. Well, yeah, that's crazy.
[00:17:32] Speaker B: All right, moving on. But conference is going to be fun this weekend, so, yes. Hopefully we're able to give you guys a good rundown, a recap of what this season has been like. We'll have more episodes of recapping with players and coaches as the weeks progress. And we got cross country coming in a couple weeks for nationals. They already made it. They punched their ticket. They're in. So let's see what our men's soccer and women's volleyball team can do for conference to carry that hype and momentum into regionals.
[00:18:04] Speaker A: I am having four teams at nationals in the fall would be crazy.
[00:18:08] Speaker B: Crazy. Be awesome. Be awesome. So we'll talk more about regionals and nationals or national possibility next week. But it's so hard not to talk about it. Like, I just want to talk about it now because.
[00:18:21] Speaker A: Especially with volleyball's projection.
[00:18:22] Speaker B: But what we. What we told you. Volleyball looks really good. Undefeated and regionals. But who knows?
[00:18:27] Speaker A: They have to take care of business.
[00:18:28] Speaker B: Who knows? Gotta take care of business. Soccer. They gotta win. They gotta win. And they're in. They control their own destiny. Of course, if you, if we beat Grace first round, move to the championship and win, we're into nationals. But in the case that we lose at regionals, we need to win two wins. This weekend will look great.
[00:18:49] Speaker A: We'll look great for a potential automatic bid.
[00:18:52] Speaker B: A championship banner will look great for a bit, especially against Barclays, who has been ranked a lot this season.
[00:18:57] Speaker A: Gym with the new logo.
[00:18:58] Speaker B: Yeah. Look great. It would. It would look great. Great. It looked weird. It would look a little weird, but I feel like that's all we got.
[00:19:08] Speaker A: Yes. Sneak peek. We have had two men's basketball scrimmages. One on Saturday.
[00:19:13] Speaker B: I was just about to mention this.
[00:19:14] Speaker A: And one on Monday. And man, it's gonna be a fun year.
[00:19:19] Speaker B: They look good.
[00:19:19] Speaker A: It's gonna be a fun.
